Re: [fast5] Re: Hi!

Sounds like you are doing great!

My take is that there is a "gene trigger" explanation for leanness. I.e., when your body decides it needs to store fat, it WILL store fat. And when it decides to be lean, it will let go of the fat. Your body has numerous mechanisms to do this, and it's very good at maintaining a specific weight despite variations in caloric intake. Which is why dieting is so hard!

But there are things that trigger the "lean" mode. Some of them are weird. Like, putting mice on a vibrating pad for 15 minutes a day, causes the new stem cells in their bones to turn into bone, rather than into fat. So vibrating a mouse makes for a leaner mouse. Some bacteria seem to make people (and mice) lean too. I suspect some "cuisines" trigger leanness too, which might be why Chinese men, with the same activity levels as paired American men, can eat more calories and still be skinnier. I think Fast-5 is one of those "triggers". WHY it's a trigger, who knows? Sure, there is probably an "evolutionary reason", but that's kind of a catchall truism and doesn't really answer the question either.

So we can just say, as in the movie "Shakespeare in Love", "It's a mystery!".  Kind of a fun mystery though.

I was down another .4 lbs this morning (I weigh daily and then figure a weekly average).  For the week, my average is down 2.4 lbs.  In total I have lost 14.8 lbs in 12 weeks.  Interestingly, the weight loss seems to be speeding up as I get further and further into my new way of eating.

It is amazing how well this eating plan works.  And I feel like it has added real joy to my life as I look forward to my dinner and enjoy it so much.  Also, add me to the group of people who find their homes MUCH tidier and de-cluttered.  Is there some evolutionary explanation for this??  Regardless, I'm loving it!

I suppose exercise is sort of off topic, but I just thought I would mention this.

I live in a city where I walk a lot and it's an easy way for me to put some exercise in by walking quickly. I can walk for my errands, it helps me a lot.

I have also read that walking is an exercise with the least risk of injury.

To lose weight, put a little spring in your step

When it comes to weight control, almost nothing is easier and cheaper than brisk walking.
Going for a walk every day can improve mood, increase energy, lower blood pressure and protect against diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer.
But to reap these benefits, you need to get the lead out and put some spring in your step.
It's not window shopping or taking a stroll in the park. Walk like you're late for the bus.
You should be able to carry on a conversation, but you'll be a little breathless when you talk, says Miriam Nelson, director of the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Prevention at Tufts University in Boston.
You should be able to feel that your heart rate is up. Keep in mind that a brisk walk for one person may be a stroll for another, she says.
Pace yourself. If you are just starting out with a walking program, you should try to work up to a pace of at least 3 mph, says Anne Lusk, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Here's another way to look at it:
 Less than 3 mph is considered slow walking.
More than 3 mph is considered brisk walking.
More than 4 mph is considered very brisk walking.

She says to figure out your speed, count your steps per minute: 3 mph is about 120 steps a minute, while 4 mph is about 135 steps a minute.
Besides increasing your pace, you may also need to increase the number of steps you take.
