[fast5] Re: IF and pregnancy?

Hiya,

I have to say that through an IF Lifestyle, I've ended up pregnant. (I'm about 30 Weeks and 5 Days) A miracle considered I have PCOS and the chances of falling pregnant in the first place was rare in itself.

I'm not exactly doing Fast-5 per-se. I'm only eating when hungry, so sometimes I'll have lunch and dinner, other times just dinner... it depends on my hunger levels. I really can't force myself to eat unless I'm hungry, otherwise I feel sick...

Health-wise, I feel fine and overly energetic. Blood tests come back normal... My polycose test was slightly raised so I ended up taking the Glucose tolerance test that came back normal. The baby appears to be healthy and happy, a strong steady heartbeat etc.

I've gained weight, and it is all baby weight. In fact I didn't look like I was remotely pregnant until my 28th week. Now there is a definite small baby bump. Admittedly I've been concerned about this because compared to everyone else I know who is pregnant. Tummy wise I'm the smallest... yet I've been reassured by my Midwife that measurement wise I'm the correct sizing for Baby's growth.

Other than the lack of the big round pregnant belly, which is more a pregnant hormonal concern than anything... I have nothing I'm overly worried about.

I hope this helps.

Re: [fast5] Confused

You might want to give it some time. My BS went WAY up after not eating, and oddly enough, it was at times I felt light-headed and "low blood sugar". I have read that this is because of an over-reaction of the body to not eating: too much cortisol is produced, releasing too much blood glucose. Supposedly after awhile this regulates itself.

For me, I can say for sure it did finally regulate itself. I don't get "hypoglycemic" episodes any more, and my average BG is down by 10 points (from 95 to 83: I never was diabetic). I often wonder that if they HAD tested my BG after fasting, when it jumped up to 120, if they would have diagnosed me as diabetic (although after a meal my BG didn't go up much at all: I seem to handle sugar ok, but I didn't handle fasting well at all).

I do think IF is a much better lifestyle for most people, esp. better than the "grazing all day" life that is recommended. There are other ways to bring down a high BG, notably:

- Drinking some tea with lemon juice in it
- Exercise
- Eating something with few calories (lettuce worked for me, but it may have been the vinegar on it: vinegar brings down BG too).

Also I think it might be a good idea to "sneak up" on the IF lifestyle, esp. for some people. I started out on another book, the Warrior Diet, which recommends raw vegies/fruits during the day, eating at night. Eventually I dropped the vegies, didn't need them. But it was an easier transition. Also moving back the "breakfast time" by increments each day, and the Fast-5 book recommends.

Also a lot of people have recommended eating more protein and less starch the night before. I think this DOES help. Especially fish works for me, and say, big green salads. Certain starches have more of a reaction than others too, so you should look at the starch source. Rice works really well for me, and sweet potatoes.

I was doing Fast 5 for a while,  and started checking my BS an hr or so after I am up and it was shooting up without eating.  I read one article that felt there wasn't any harm in that,  but seeing it over 140 made me decide to quit for a while.  Soon as I eat,  it comes back down.  Didn't really want to leave the group as there's lots of information,  and maybe I can come back to it.

Re: [fast5] Re: Should we stop eating several hours before sleep?

I have mixed feelings on this. I for one do tend to get heartburn if I lay down too soon after eating.

OTOH, pretty much every animal I know of, goes to sleep after it eats! In the case of snakes, for several days or a week. Lions too.

Delayed gastric emptying is not an especially bad thing. It means the food is digested more thoroughly. This cuts down on the amount of allergic reactions, dysbiosis, food poisoning, and a mess of other problems. One of the advantages of taking vinegar with meals (or some weight loss drugs) with meals, is that if the food is digested for longer, you get hungry less often.

My compromise is: I do often take a nap after eating, but I use pillows or whatever to sleep on a sort of incline. I expect with people who don't have a compromised stomach sphincter, laying down to sleep isn't an issue in any case. Certainly it isn't for snakes or lions.

[fast5] Re: IF and pregnancy?

Thanks for the reply, Heather!

Yes, I know people are always reluctant to give pregnancy advice, but I love hearing about your experience, especially since you were my age as well! :) That alone is encouraging! I think I'm rather good with vitamins, etc, as I'm a WAPF "foodie" (good fats, real milk, soaked grains, grass fed meats) and also gets lots of fermented foods in my diet. I've been eating a "conception" diet for several years now, in preparing for this time....I feel SOOOOO good on FAST-5 that I really think it will be fine for conception....it's just eating while pregnant I'm wondering about. Guess I'll cross that bridge when it comes!

Thanks again for the encouragement. I'll have to keep you posted on my status! :)
