[fast5] Re: How to eat (not what) during the 5 hours window?

Thank you all for your comments. I'm happy to see that in a sense I woke up the group again, even if it's just for a short time.
I'm vegan, mostly raw, so that's why I don't really have any issues with junk food and likes. I understand that the time table and quantity and how many meal it's a subjective thing, so you've helped me to decide to listen to my body and not to follow a strict rule, of any kind. Two meals in the 5 hour window make sense to me because you eat enough nutrients and you fast the 19 hours according to the philosophy.

All the best

Eyal

Re: [fast5] Getting back to Fast-5 -- new issues have come up

I also have found it much harder to get back onto Fast-5 than it was to start the first time.  This time around it's been over a year and it still isn't as easy for some reason.  Everything from wanting to eat outside my window to making bad choices on what I eat.  Carb cravings, too.

I'm sticking with it though.

Re: [fast5] Getting back to Fast-5 -- new issues have come up

Susan,
I am just getting back on Fast-5 today. Fresh start. I tried a couple weeks ago and too much emotional stuff came up. I am an emotional eater.

I noticed it is much harder to get back on then the first time. Even though I know it worked for me too. I think you may be over thinking this. The last time I did this I was eating all kids of food during my window and still lost but after a few weeks one meal satisfied me as my stomach started to shrink. So don't stress over it right now. Maybe that is why we are told to not expect weight loss for 3 weeks. My eating window will be 4-9 or 5-10. My weight this morning is 188.4.

I have been sticking to eating this way most days so I have dropped some over the last few months.I was eating lots of junk food and got back up to 196. My all time high for years now. Perhaps we both need to read the book again to refresh our memories.

I hope we both can encourage each other and get back on our weight loss journey for good.

Thanks for all the great responses here!

I really am glad to see people posting here; I knew about the FB groups and had joined them but never felt the same level of familiarity as I did with this group. Hope we'll do more of this.

I started Fast-5 again on Easter Sunday and have not fallen off since. I've done it before and found that once I got into the routine, my weight dropped FAST (I know that's not the meaning of Fast-5, but it was something I noticed--I could drop 20 pounds in a few weeks and feel terrific). I also knew my hunger levels were always down and my energy levels were up; all positive.

Getting back to it this time, after having fallen off, was really hard for me, though I knew how well it worked. In fact, I'd say that's the only downside to this lifestyle. Once you're on it, you cruise. But if you go off--and whenever I did, it was consciously, but thinking I could just 'hop back on'--it was almost impossible for me to get back on. This time, I'm just staying on. Period.

I've noticed two things this time around that I don't remember thinking much about in previous Fast-5 times:

1) I'm eating a LOT of junk food, as in, "How fast can I stuff it in now that my window has opened?" Knowing I can have it NOW but not LATER seems to stimulate me to eat all this garbage I know isn't good for me, just because I know I'm allowed.

2) I think my body actually needs less food than I'm giving it during that five-hour window, but somehow my mind is telling me that food will not be available for another 24 hours, so get it in now! I know when my window closes, I'm definitely feeling over-fed and it doesn't feel good. I don't quite know how to bring down these levels yet. I've been eating a lot of fresh strawberries, which I know are good for me, but even tend to overeat those. I want to eat 'enough' without eating 'too much'.

I realize this is probably purely psychological. I know that Fast-5 works for me, I know that I always have plenty to eat and that I can bring my portion levels way down, but I'm not doing it yet. I wonder if anyone else has encountered this issue in the early stages and if so, how you managed it, or how long it took before you relaxed and realized you had plenty and didn't need more than you ate during your window?

I'm feeling REALLY happy that I've gotten back to fasting 19 hours/day. Right now my window is 4 - 9 pm, which is quite late, and I'll probably adjust it (years ago when I did this, it was 3 - 8 pm). I'd rather eat earlier, but work doesn't usually end till 6 pm, and I like not having to rush meals during the day; would rather have a long relaxed time to eat and unwind. But still really prefer to eat earlier. (I realize this sounds a little schizophrenic; I'm just noticing a lot this time around that wasn't part of the equation in previous times. Or maybe I'm just over-complicating things.)

I know eventually I'll adjust, but my weight is very high now (almost 196 pounds) and I'd really like to adjust my eating so I'm eating enough but not too much and the weight can begin to come off. Each time I've done this before, I've always dropped at least 20 pounds and then something would come up and I'd tell myself, "Well, it's okay to go off Fast-5 this once." And then I'd be doomed.

Don't plan to make that mistake again, but would love to know how other Fast-5ers handled the same issues.

Thanks!

Susan

Re: [fast5] Re: How to eat (not what) during the 5 hours window?

For me, when I break fast (between 12 pm to 1), I would be ready for a good-sized meal (not a "gorge" meal, of course, just regular).  Then toward the end of my window, I usually want a lighter supper (having perhaps had a snack in there, too).  So I try to listen to what my body is asking for.

Also, by having an idea of the nutrients/foods I really want to obtain in my diet, I tend to prioritize those foods as my planned meals/snacks, and I find that doesn't leave much room or desire for the junk.    So on that end, I think planning is crucial to my own success.  Otherwise, I break fast and grab chips out of the pantry....ha!

Ultimately, for me incorporating fasting into my own life:  I *aim* for nutrient-sense foods, listen to my body and its cues and clues on health, and worry less about volume, calories, etc unless I'm feeling hungry or weak in my fasting window.  In my experience, it truly doesn't take long to find your personal balance.

When I did the fast5 religiously, during a five hour window I would eat normally, but certainly not only one meal.  Would worry about your getting the needed nutrients from food, if eating so little.

By the way, this method was the ONLY way I lost weight and felt healthier for the effort.  A long break in the routine temporarily got me off track.  So glad to see some conversation going on within the group.  It's helping to stimulate that desire to jump on the bandwagon again!  It really does work!

[fast5] Re: How to eat (not what) during the 5 hours window?

I did Fast-5 for several years.  I lost about 50 lbs in the first year or so (got down to 185) and put back on about 10 before being stable for a couple of years.  When I started cheating and then quit Fast-5 altogether, it took a couple of years for my weight to creep back up to 230 lbs.

In Jan 2015 I started back and I'm at 205 now with a goal to get back below 200 and stay there.

Generally, I eat what I want in my 5 hour window (3-8 PM) starting with a small lunch and then dinner around 6:00 or so.  My best weight loss has been when I minimize carbs and especially when the very first thing I eat  is either protein or fat (cheese).

Any sweets make me crave more carbs of any kind.  That never works out well since those cravings last a couple of days.

After I started Fast-5 the first time, I gradually changed what I wanted to eat.  My body wanted protein and that's when the pounds and inches started dropping off.

Most of the current discussions are on the Facebook group.  But the email archives here contain a wealth of knowledge.  Everyone is different, so don't worry if some of that advice doesn't suit you or work out well for you.  Most people have said this, but it's often overlooked.  Find what works for you.  It seems to me that only really important part is to not eat outside a 5 hour window.  Everything else is details that will be unique to you.

Re: [fast5] How to eat (not what) during the 5 hours window?

You can eat whatever you want. After a while you will notice you fill up faster and may only want one meal. There is another private group you might want to join that has more people supporting each-other. Perhaps Bert Herring will jump in and share the link.

Thank you Linda for your reply.

It makes sense the way I practice the fast-5, just wondered if during the 5 hour gap can I eat something without compromise the results.

Have a nice day

Hi there,
I'm new to fast-5 lifestyle, just a week now, and it's been good so far.

One question always pops in my mind: how should I eat during the 5 hour window?
One meal a day doesn't make sense because ones eat every 24 hours. I eat the first meal around 1 pm and the last meal around 6 pm. No eating in between. Is that the idea of the fast 5 method?

Will be happy to get your reply

All the best
