Re: [fast5] Re: Why Sleep is More Important Than We Ever Thought

Next time that happens, try eating more eggs? Seems that the orexin
in eggs helps counteract the "brain fog" effects. Turmeric helps too.

Re: [fast5] Why Sleep is More Important Than We Ever Thought

Thanks Tamara!

BTW that happens to fit nicely with my uric acid experiment, as yet another variable! Turns out that people who get less sleep ... their uric acid levels go up. It's known that gout is related to sleep apnea, but since gout is also related to obesity which causes sleep apnea, it's hard to know which is the chicken and which is the egg. But with someone sleeping less just as an experiment:

So it was back to the doctor to see what was wrong. The results were unmistakable: my levels of uric acid, a waste product in the blood that results from the body breaking down foods, had gone up — from 409 µmol/l (micromoles per litre) to 417 µmol/l and rising.

Uric acid is associated with diabetes — and gout. For the first time in my life, it seems I had gout in my little toe, according to the doctor.

But there was a longer term worry. Gout is a common form of inflammation.
Inflammation is linked to sleeplessness — scientists at the American Heart Association have found that when we sleep fewer than six hours a night, the levels of inflammatory substances in our blood can jump by a quarter.

...

And if the inflammation didn't kill me, obesity would. I have been a muesli-munching vegetarian for three decades, which has helped to keep me on the dietary straight and narrow.

But within just a few days of sleeplessness I was overwhelmed by strange, powerful cravings and I found myself urgently spooning peanut butter and jam straight from the jars and into my mouth.

What was going on?

In fact, it's well known that your appetite hormones get knocked out of kilter by tiredness, wakeful nights and poor-quality sleep.

One study found that cutting sleep down to just four hours increased people's levels of ghrelin, a hormone that increases appetite, by 28 per cent after only two days

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1367811/Sleep-How-losing-just-hours-sleep-YEARS-life.html

On curing gout by curing sleep apnea:

There are a lot of other factors that raise uric acid levels, with fructose being one of the big ones, along with certain species of fish and certain meats. But also some that lower uric acid, such as vinegar, lemon juice, egg whites, some vegies and fruits. What I've found is that if I stick to the "low uric acid foods" ... i.e. all the ones that seem to help gout patients ... my hunger level goes WAY down. Now I need to make sure to get enough sleep too!

Why Sleep is More Important Than We Ever Thought

Not sleeping enough-less than seven hours of sleep per night-can reduce and undo the benefits of dieting, according to research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. who is Vicky in FL?? are you sure I didn't write this reply? LOL

like you, I like the simplicity and adaptability of the plan. I have a target of 11am to break my fast but sometimes it's a little earlier and sometimes it's a little later. like you, i try to eat real food but occasionally eat a dessert or fast food and when I do,I don't stress about it. i have eaten well and a little naughty and lost 7 lb this month. this works for me!

[fast5] RE: Best time for window

 Update:

I thought I would try the 5-10 window to see if that would push me past the plateau. I gained two pounds in the week that I did it, and didn't like eating that late.

I think I may be at some sort of "set point" where my body really resists going lower. So I'm back to 3-8, which works well for me. I don't like going to sleep on a full stomach. It made me feel yucky in the morning.

I have started with a no grain, no sugar approach this week. just going to make a goal to do it for 4 weeks.

I am still eating potatoes and quinoa, which probably isn't that great, but we'll see how it goes.

Charlie

Re: [fast5] 5:2

I had read about it some years ago, though they hadn't named it. It was a study of diabetics, to see if fasting one or two days a week would help glucose tolerance (it did).

I don't have any information as to which works better though ... fast-5 lowered my blood glucose from 105 to 83, which was good enough by me. Also I am very lousy at counting calories, and it's easier for me to keep a habit if it's the same thing every day. I also have had a big problem of spending all day in the kitchen ... since we don't use prepared food or eat out, I have to make all my own meals. One meal is way easier than three! Before I did Fast-5, I made breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and cleanup, and all day was in the kitchen. Now I make dinner, and everyone eats whatever they feel like for breakfast and snacks. In practice, this means everyone gets one main meal a day, and it's worked out fine.

Another similar program is The Warrior Diet, which is what I read before Fast-5. Basically it's not much different ... raw fruits and vegies are allowed during the day, which makes it way easy to start out. But after a few weeks I just forgot to eat the raw foods so it ended up being the same thing. The other people in the group I was in had the same experience.

The main tweaks that made it work for me though, are the ones I've mentioned: avoiding fructose/sucrose, using MCT instead of other fats, eating plenty of eggs and fish, adding lemon juice and vinegar.

Now, the 5:2 book emphasizes "healthy foods" like fruits and vegies, and you'll notice I don't mention them much. I've found it interesting that they don't seem to make much difference in weight loss. If anything, "smoothies" may be what torpedoed my weight loss some time ago. So I've been going through the book "What I Eat" ... which shows a typical meal for 80 people around the world. It really is super-interesting.

Near as I can tell, the really healthy-looking people have a huge range of caloric intakes, but very few have much in the way of fresh fruits and vegies. The idea of a "salad" is mostly in the American group, and most of that group are also living off diet soda and stuff like packaged crackers. The healthiest older people in the group all seem to be Asian, and living mostly off rice, pork and eggs, and soups (which include greens and vegies). Very little fruit or raw vegies. This kind of makes sense, since raw vegies are a huge source of contamination (as is now becoming a more well-known problem here too).

All of which is mainly to say: EXPERIMENT! People who write books are giving their opinions, but their opinions tend to mirror the current meme, which may or may not work for you.

Re: [fast5] 5:2

i tried it in the beginning of my dieting days, but it didn't make enough of an impact.  i'm planning on trying it when i hit goal, which is in 10 pounds, since i still would like to lose 10+ pounds beyond my goal.  Until then, i'd be losing weight too slowly for my state of mind.

for men, i'd think 5:2 would work decently.  YMMV

Re: [fast5] Re: sick

Another thing that has helped me is a heating pad. I have a good one with good temperature control and some infra-red built in. I put it over my sinuses, throat, and lungs and just sit.

Viruses and bacteria are rather sensitive to temperature changes, which is why running a fever works in the body. But sinuses and airways tend to be cooler than the rest of the body, so heating the area can kill lots of bugs. Going in a sauna would help too, or even one of those sinus-steamers. And drinking hot liquids of course!

Same thing with me, sick with bad cold. I've found the body can heal better when it doesn't have to deal with digesting food. Even sick animals will stop eating when sick. I eat in my window as usual. A couple of days I found myself wanting food earlier. Figured out what I really needed was water. Wasn't drinking as much due to feeling badly.

Hope we're both better very soon.

Re: [fast5] sick

I think one big issue is medication. Some medications just need to be
eaten with food. In that case, figuring out the minimal amount of calories
that will buffer the pills? Sometimes just drinking a lot of water works.

Best thing I know of for colds is good ol' chicken soup, esp. if made
with the skin. Plus garlic and red pepper! Once the fat is taken off and it's strained,
it's really rather low-calorie in any case. Lemon juice water is good
for colds too (again, even better with a dash of hot sauce).

Otherwise I don't know of the pros or cons of eating vs. viruses. Once
your body is adapted to Fast-5, it's probably MORE stressful on
your body to eat ... then the body has to deal with digestion PLUS handle the
viral load.

I do carry alcohol with me everywhere though, and use it on my hands
after being anywhere in the "cold season". I'm tempted to wear gloves
even, to remind myself not to wipe my eyes (one of the bigger sources
of colds). And I get my annual flu shot (which seems to work, I got the flu
the one year I did NOT get it).

[fast5] sick

I wanted to ask what everyone does when they get sick? I have had a cold or something for the past 2 days (sore throat, congestion, aches/pains, etc.). Yesterday, I stuck with F5 and did not open my window until my normal time. Is that was everyone else does, or should you eat if you're sick and pick it back up when you're feeling normal again?

Thanks!

:-)  I'm not aware of an age limit on silliness!

There is a lake near me, and someone had routed the water jets from a jet ski into boots, so as being pulled behind the ski, he got boosted into the air on "stilts" of water, about 10 feet. I guess if a person wants to do something like that, doing it over water is best.

Ouch. Glad you are ok!

On the up side, you must be in pretty good shape if you can come through a fall like that and not even know you were injured.

I wanted to provide an update on what happened to.

To make a long story short, the problem was related to a concussion! I did not know it, but I suffered a concussion while tubing on the lake the weekend before. The reason I didn't know I suffered a concussion was because I did not hit my head on anything or fall off of the tube. The concussion was caused by the jarring of bouncing off of the water at 40 or 50 mph.

[fast5] Re: Best time for window

Charlie,

My eating window is similar to yours. What's wonderful about Fast5 is it's simplicity and adaptability. No two days are alike. 1pm is my target time for my 1st meal. But sometimes I'm want to eat earlier, and other times I'm so busy my break-fast is pushed back as late as 3:30pm.

So long as I'm eating nourishing real food I do fine. And when I have birthday cake with my granddaughter I enjoy every bite and don't beat myself up about it. Same with fried foods. Last night I fried okra from my small garden and salmon patties. My other meal had been a large bowl of homemade miso soup. I'm losing weight eating this way, mostly eating moderately and healthy, but occasionally having fried foods or heavy desserts.

Re: [fast5] Best time for window

I've had the most success in a 4-9 or 5-10 window. Keeps me from snacking much. I've been struggling to get back on faithfully. I do we'll for a couple days and then I open my window early and it is hard to close it early. Thus more calories. I've basically maintained over the summer and hope to kick in serious when fall comes and through winter. I love lots of hot herb tea and soup.

Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

I think it's because I have not been consistent in my eating window, opening it anywhere from 12 to 3.

It was my understanding that it doesn't really matter when the window is. I just re-read the book though and although he says at one point where the window is doesn't matter, later in the book he says 2 things are special about fast five 1) the 19 hour fast and 2) sleeping in a non fasted state. so sleep should be just after finishing eating.

When I thought about when to have my window, I thought it would be easier to sleep when i'm more fasted (so that if i do get hungry, i'll be asleep and won't notice!). I also always heard it's better to not eat at night.

I guess the logic of the fast five is that you are burning more calories /fat when you are not sleeping, so its best to spend the latter part of your fast awake and burning fat rather than sleeping.

any thoughts on this? Do the best results come in the 5-10 window if you are sleeping at normal time?

excellent response STEE....I find mixing it up some is the greatest help.  I've learned that there are foods that I do not respond well to.  That is the beauty of the fasting life.
