Re: [fast5] Re: New to Fast Five!

Well I have gained ten lbs. Blood Pressure is up and cholesterol. Doctor wanted to put me on Lipitor. I said No, I will lose weight. So I have to take this seriously and get back on Fast-5. It worked before and it will work again!😃

Thamesas

I think you found an area where Fast 5 shines: ''not having to think about eating ... meals a day or calorie counting every bite...''
That's the part I find suits me. I can just shut my mouth and it is easier when one is busy.
But I need help.
Anyone got a comment or helpful idea about that 'plateau', when you check the scales and there is no loss?  And no reason to not have lost more weight? I've happily lost a pound a week for several months. I feel great and my clothes are fitting much better.  I do have a bit of semi-skimmed milk in my 'just one' coffee I have every morning but, no pounds have been shed in the last two weeks!   Grrrrr

Ideas please?
THanx

Thanks so much for telling me about the private Facebook, I'll definitely join that today. I think I'll take your advice about waiting 3 weeks before weighing in. I never understood the "loosing inches before pounds" idea until you explained it, that makes a lot of sense now.

Every day is different for me as far as how difficult it is. Some days I'm not bothered at all by my fasting period and others I keep looking at the clock, stomach churning. I realized today that I might be "hungrier" on the days when I'm less busy. I've always used food as entertainment, so this diet is wonderful because it's really making me aware of exactly what triggers my bad eating habits. When I'm really busy at work not only am I not as hungry, I'm thankful that I don't have to worry about stopping my day to eat and then inevitably feeling sluggish afterwards. Diets have always been far more mental than physical for me (as I think they are for most people) but none has really given me the time to explore my psychological relationship with food. Because for 19 hours I'm not having to think about eating 6 small meals a day or calorie counting every bite I put in my mouth I'm free to really get in touch with my brain and food.

[fast5] Trying again

Hi folks
Am forwarding this bcs I see no contentious verbiage in my earlier email and I wished to insure Sam and Cheryl got my message!

btw  My top bug-bear is that I love one real coffee...in the morning...and with semi-skim milk.
I believe this - the addition of just a glug of milk - has slowed my rate of weight loss to ounces instead of pounds as I find it very easy to adhere to only eating between 5-10pm.  Still, this works out to the suggested loss of about one pound a week; over the last 4 weeks, I've lost 4 lbs.
Not dramatic but, for me,  sustainable...and without shopping for a load of stuff I might not normally eat, counting calories, making some different meal every day, weighing food, perhaps going to a weighing-in type meeting and paying a good deal of money for the meetings and supporting books etc etc etc.

Also - on how to break your fast -
I make and eat cholesterol-fighting oatmeal, banana and walnut muffins (for the last 16 years; yes they work for me) and find if I eat one at 5pm I'm satisfied and can go onto prepare a regular meal in order to eat dinner around 730. So try an oatmeal break of some sort. Maybe a granola type bar?
That slow-release oat is satisfying and might help you too.

Good luck to all!
If this works for you, wonderful.
If it seems impossible, give it a month.
And when you feel hungry (usually around 3pm for me) ...imagine it's a sign your body is just dispatching your accumulated fatty deposits!
And that is a very good feeling indeed.

And Sam:  very impressive weight loss there. How long have you been Fast 5-ing?
Pepper.

Sam  Perfectly said to Cheryl. Same course of events I found to be true. Now It's just a way I live...and I suspect many others do too.
Think bcs it is an unusual approach for the way we live our lives now...  It does take some consideration and internalising about what Burt sez.  bonne chance to all!

hey pepper! thanks for clearing that up! you are right about the science behind fast five. I thought you were saying the later window works better so I kind of feel silly for going on and on about the time of the window except maybe it will help some other people to know it's ok to choose a window that fits with your lifestyle.

Cheryl, don't give up if you don't see a big weight loss right away. when I first started I ate a lot during my window and noticed the longer I stayed on fast five the easier it is and the less I ate. I have only lost 1lb  per week but it adds up. before fast five I lost 0 lb in 10 years. my weight would go up and back down but I couldn't get under 194. now I weigh 168 and still losing!

Yes the fast 5 is about the 19 hours not eating and you can chose the Window that fits you best.

However, the reasoning behind the 5-10pm Window is, I  think, as follows.
- Most people go to bed at around 10. With your window from 5-10 you will not go to bed hungry. If you are hungry when you wake up, you can tell yourself to look forward to your eating Window opening up and you can distract yourself with other tasks. You soon find that hunger comes and goes in waves and you soon adapt and don't feel the hunger as much until close to your window.
If your window is earlier in the day and you are hungry when you go to sleep, it is more difficult to sleep and you may be ravenous in the morning and cheat.
- The other reason is that most people get off work around 5 and go home and want to have a meal with family. Breakfast is easy to skip as every one gets ready for the day and lunch can generally be skipped and no one will say much but is is hard to skip supper with out people noticing and hard to skip when you see everyone else eating. Especially if you are the meal preparer. . Also hard to eat a big meal in, say the afternoon if you work a standard shift.
-5-10 window allows a small snack as you prepare your dinner, then a big dinner and a snack before bed if you chose.
Having said all that, you have to find a window that fits, shift workers, students, people who emtertain over lunch etc may have to adjust. and your window is not set in stone. yyu can change it to fit a certain day of the week where you may have a special lunch,  or you can even occasionally expand your window to fit a special occasion - just don.t make it a habbit :-(
Some people also find that what they eat makes a difference. For example, if you snack before you close your window, you may find a high protein snack works better for controlling hunger the next day than say twinkies. You may have to experiment a bit to find your ideal.
I find I have to plan a little and eat a lot of veggies early in the Window to fill  up a bit, otherwise I scarf down a bunch of junk and have no room for real food.. But that is just me.

19 hrs - not eating
do not look at scales but once a week
if you are keeping to Burt's rules, it will work
Best to you and hope this is a good way for you to go; it is a new way of living, remember!

This is the only diet where I didn't want to eat before bed!  And snack all day long.  I think I ate this way somewhat when I was young.

Hey Samdgood

Yep. Almost confused myself with what I wrote!

I was trying to convey to Cheryl that the premise of Fast 5 is the not eating  for 19 continuous hours and therefore eating some tie within in a window of 5-10pm allows the time one is sleeping to add up to 'Fast' time. These 19 hours 'train' your body that nothing is coming into your digestive system and to get busy using fat your body has previously stored.

Agree that going to bed on a full stomach is not great for me either but once I am into the swing of this method, I find I have eaten all I want around 7-8pm and simply remind myself to put the wine glass down by 10pm!

I actually love the benefit of not thinking about food after about the first 6-7 days. And not to look at the scales - other than maybe once a week. It really is not about weight in the early days; I find my clothes fit & feel better as the pounds slip off. As a creature of habit, once I had my routine, meeting up for lunch was not a trial either.

Best of luck to all
This does work for a lot of folks.
Just keep an eye on that 'Lizard brain' of ours which wants us to eat lots of everything whenever we are faced with food!

good tip about the peppermint tea, btw

I am a little confused by what pepper howard said about the time of the window " more results oriented that we eat between 5pm to 10pm is so when one sleeps, one is adding the snooze time - typically from 11pm 'til 6, 7 or 8am - or roughly 7-8ish hours of  'easy time' in that it's not hard to not eat when you are sleeping!"
confused because either window (11am to 4pm or 5pm to 10pm) includes the time we sleep. there are two reasons I prefer the earlier time which still gives me 19 hours of fasting.
1. I don't have to wait all day from the time I get up to break my fast.
 2. I hate to go to bed with a full stomach.
I think it's easier to not eat in the evening after my window closes than it is to wait until 5pm to eat. as I have said before, it is different for everyone. a lot of people have 2 good reasons for the later window.
1. they are busy during the day which I am not. and/or
 2. they find it hard to say no to eating in the evenings. also, many people have to prepare dinner for the family at that time.
but for single people like me who don't have a job, the earlier window works great. if I'm watching tv in the evening and get a craving, I will have a cup of peppermint tea. peppermint kills the appetite and it's a treat for me.
