[fast5] Re: Day 3

Hi Erica,
Congrats on your 2 lb. loss, that's fantastic. How does it feel to be 9 days into it? I'm right behind you, so just look over your shoulder and I'll be there with support!! :) My hubby and kids eat three meals a day and since the kids are teenagers and up I don't have to make breakfast or lunch... phew! I haven't even told anyone yet that I'm doing this. Kinda flyin' under the radar as long as possible. Sounds like adding some breakfast foods when you break your fast would help, but I'm obviously not the expert here, so I'm sure someone more experienced will chime in. When I do break my fast I do start with something like a fruit or veggie just to take the edge off. It really seems to help so I don't dive into something uncontrollably. I also feel the sigh of RELIEF from not spending so much mental energy on food. We seem to be going through some of the same things! Great to meet you and keep posting cuz it really helps,
Susie

[fast5] Re: Susie - Day 3

Hi Karen,
Yes, a saw a post by Heather mentioning something like salads/veggies/fruit first, followed by lean protein, starches/dessert. I should hunt it down again and copy it.
Yup, so right. I know I've got this big burst of energy to do well, but it's the long haul I'm after and it's the "journey" to learn from that will help me. Thanks for the advice and the motivation.
Oh and arthritis... I'll be 50 in a month and have had a tough time learning to slow down. I used to run road races, ski, hike... and active life. Now it's just getting through the day with some light stationary bike or easy walking. My arthritis is in my left hip w/ some bone on bone, a herniated disc in the lumbar back area, but with accupuncture that seems to be under control. A hip replacement has been suggested for my future, but I'd like to get rid of some of this weight first. I've put 35-40 lbs on in the last 5-6 years as my activity level has gone down with ailments. Compounded with the age thing, it's been tough to find something that works. Until now, that is!!
Well, it's Day 4 and doing well,
Susie

RE: [fast5] Meal suggestions

The possibilities of gluten-free smoothies is endless, Claudia.

This is one I used on a recent cleanse diet:

"One whole grapefruit or two oranges
One box of blueberries
One box of strawberries
Lettuce (optional)" (I'd add 2 large leaves of kale or collard greens or 2
big handfuls of spinach)
I'd also add 1 T of flax seed

This smoothie kept me satisfied for at least 3 hours! I was not using
intermittent fasting at the time.

Now I use this one:

1/2 orange
1 cup strawberries
1/2 c blueberries
1/3 banana
Pineapple juice (one ice cube size, lol)
1 T flax seed
The greens as listed above
6 egg whites

RE: [fast5] Intro

Welcome, Erica!

Sorry I can’t address you’re endocrine situation.

Hi All,

I just started Fast 5 this Monday, although I have done intermittent fasting every once in a while before (not lately). My body seems to be adjusting slowly to the five hour window. The hunger comes in cycles!

My question to everyone is: if you have some sort of endocrine imbalance, has eating this way helped? I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 1.5 months ago, and am wondering if Fast 5 made any difference to anyone else.

Thanks,

Erica

[fast5] Karen reports

I thought once I didn’t need to take my meds (w/food) every twelve hours, I could get back to F5 but found myself floundering on lifting days.

I went back to a healthy ‘regular’ (‘eat all day’) diet.  But with the holiday and then my DS and his wife visiting this week, there is a lot of not-so-good food in the house.

I have chosen to lighten up on my workouts this week and use F5.

Monday was a real test, however!  (I’d fasted just fine Saturday and Sunday…)

My day started with the dog walk, then a bit of yard work, then taking my boys to their gym work out for football.  My Marine son went with us.  So while the football boys did their work out (all outside as the school gym was closed), my Marine son had the rest of us doing body weight work.  I did a series of planks, walking lunges and one-legged squats.

Then we went home to fix all these big boys (and the rest of the kids) a big breakfast and get ready for MY workout.

17 hrs in to my fast, we finally made it to the gym for an intense (but very low weighted) work out.  I’d been a little light-headed and was a bit concerned about the intensity of the workout I knew we had coming, but I persevered.  Between the work out, then the cardio/intervals and stretching, we were at the gym for an hour.

A couple more errands to run while in town then home.

I made it perfectly to a 19-hr fast but was well more than ready to eat by the time I had my food ready!

I so appreciate the knowledge of Intermittent Fasting!!!

RE: [fast5] Susie - Day 3

Hi Susie! Congratulations on taking charge of your eating and doing
something good for yourself!

Take each day and learn through each one; don't be in a hurry for them to go
by. Eating is just one part of our lives, eh? ;-))

Heather had posted how the Warrior Diet suggests you break your fast.

I can't locate it right off hand and don't remember it exactly, but it seems
to me, they suggested breaking your fast with a salad, then add the protein
and starches and finally dessert, if desired.

I noticed you commented about arthritis, too... well over a year ago, I
(51) noticed tightness in my knuckles and feared it might be the start of
arthritis. It comes and goes. But I am noticing it is gone when I don't
eat wheat! So as you tweak your nutrition, try a week (or more) with as
little gluten as possible and see if that doesn't make a difference for you
(a week might not be long enough...).
