Re: [fast5] Re: In Case of Emergency During Fasting

It's better not to eat AT ALL, probably. And after a week or three, there is not much desire or need to.

However, when starting out, it's good to know you have an "out" if it gets too bad hunger-wise. Otherwise there is a temptation to just toss in the towel and have a big meal. Major hunger and "the shakes" is often due to high cortisol, not "low blood sugar" and it's often pretty easy to fool the cortisol levels without eating a meal.

Also, sometimes you might have to take medications during the day, the require being taken with food. In those cases, it's nice to know there are foods that provide the needed buffering, without setting off your insulin system.

On my jar of pickles, one pickle is listed as zero calories. It does provide bulk of a sort, and the vinegar/spice content is likely to bring down cortisol levels, and it is a comfort food. Lettuce is pretty much zero calories too. So is vinegar. The recommended cutoff for calories in a snack is like 5 calories. So a pickle is "legal" and also might help some people stay on track.

A hard-boiled egg is more like 70 calories, so not "legal" but also not likely to make you hungrier later, while a piece of toast probably would make you hungrier in an hour or two and so ruin the entire day.

Hope this helps!

Hi everyone
I am a complete newbie on here so am a bit ignorant about the Fast-5 way of doing things. I have read the e-book and have also been doing Brad Pilon's EatStopEat 24 hour fast twice a week for the past 3.5 weeks.

What confuses me about these posts are that I thought you weren't supposed to take in ANY calories during the 19 hours of fasting? I understand that celery and lettuce are extremely low in calories, but wouldn't they set off the reaction that produces salivia ie. your body thinking that you are getting ready to eat something yummy when actually you are only eating 3 lettuce leaves,,,, resulting in you feeling even more hungry?

How can you eat pickle, eggs etc when your body is supposed to be in a state of ketotis? Am a bit confused.

Am considering swapping the 2 x 24 hour fasts for the 19 hour daily fast, but I need to get the facts before I start.

Any comments or advice would be welcome

Thanks - Jan :O)
