Re: [fast5] Brand New To Fast-5 - Read The Book Twice But Still Have Some Questions

Hi Paul

You'll find lots of feedback on pretty much all of your questions in the group archive, but here's my two-pennyworth on the issues I have personal experience of.  As to working out fasted in general, and in the morning in particular, I've had decades-worth (literally) of experience of both, and my feedback is that neither is in the least problematic, provided you allow enough time for adaptation.  This latter point is one I would personally stress, as I feel that often when people decide they have "failed" at something, it's because they mistake the problems of forcing the pace for the unreachability of the goal itself. In my experience, the prize doesn't go to who is fastest to some "goal" (whether that is weight loss, some notion of "fitness", or whatever), but to whosoever is able to incorporate the most benefits over the long-term (ultimately a lifetime).

Personally, I came to daytime fasting via a warrior-style regime, and I found it a good way to transition, and to deal with any hunger pangs during the adaptation process. My goodie-bag contained only fruit and raw veggies during this period (I wanted to lose weight at the time) but this was just my choice.  Gradually I found quite spontaneously that I was breaking my fast less and less, and later and later in the day, until in the end I found quite naturally that I was left with a single eating "window".  I can't really say how long this took because it was many years ago and I didn't at any time focus on a single terminal goal, only with how well what I was doing at the time served my life needs. Throughout that period I worked out in the early morning with no problems - running, heavyhands, bodyweight circuits etc - and indeed I've often hiked in the hills, skied, etc without needing to supplement my previous evening's calorie intake.

I don't have a great deal of experience of regular time zone changes, but I can say that once one is well adapted psychologically and physiologically to this kind of regime (and again I stress that only you will really know when this has occurred) one can play with the parameters without upsetting the overall strategy.  Sometimes when circumstances have dictated that I can't eat during my normal window I've postponed it (occasionally by several hours), other times I've eaten earlier.  Neither has caused any particular problem because it seems to take at least as long to de-adapt as to adapt in the first place.  As to supplements, of course you "can" take them whenever you like, but general principles, both of nutrition and that of "standing-down" the digestive process during fasting, might indicate taking them during your window.

Hope this helps - I'm sure you'll get more feedback.

Hi Everyone,

Let me apologize in advance for the long post I'm about to write. I just came across this diet plan/lifestyle yesterday and spent most of the morning reading, researching and re-reading the book. I'm a fairly active person but ideally I would like to lose 20-25lbs to get back to my college weight. Since I've just turned 40, this would be a major accomplishment for me. Right now I'm trying to determine between trying the Warrior Diet or Fast-5.

Based on what I've read, I'm excited about the possibilites Fast-5 offers but have the following questions:

1. I workout in the morning (from 6:30am to 7:30am) 5 times a week. I usually take a supplement, eat 1 hard boiled egg and a small shake (Athletic Greens) prior to working out. Anyone have trouble working out in the morning on this program without food or are there some tips you can share?

2. Can multivitamins or other supplements be taken during the fasting phase?

3. I'm from California and do a lot of traveling to the east coast. The time zone change could frequently impact by eating windows - anyone have any advice on how to manage that?

4. Since this is my first time, any tips on managing hunger throughout the day? Pickles, small handful of nuts, etc?

5. Instead of getting cold turkey, I've been thinking of following the adjustment phase and having break-fast around noon. Will there be any weight loss or even worse, weight gain during the adjustment period?

6. Would I still see the benefits of weightloss if I did this program 5-6 days a week vs. 7? I'm a big believer in the 80/20 rule, but I'm not sure if it will work under this program.

7. Lastly, although I know this program may take up to 3 weeks to see results, anyone experience weight loss in the first 3 weeks?

Thanks very much for your help with answering these questions. I'm looking forward to being another successful fast-5er and a future prodcutive memeber of this group.

Paul
