Do you think this poor man's soda blocks hunger better than herbal tea? A for a calorie free sweetener, I use stevia. :)

Herbal tea never blocked hunger much for me (unless it has turmeric: I add turmeric to my coffee on occasion. It's good for sore joints too). Acetic acid though, has been studied a lot for it's effect on blood sugar and weight loss. In studies, people who took vinegar before meals, lost weight ... without doing anything else. It's hard for people to drink vinegar though, so most people stopped doing it after awhile.

Making "poor man's soda" give a good slug of acetate (the non-sour form of acetic acid) but also tastes good.

No one seems to know why acetate does what it does. What it does in studies is:

- Cause weight loss (probably by making people eat less)
- Increase insulin sensitivity
- Lower blood pressure

There is a lot of info on this for people who want to Google it. Some people think it has to do with apple pectin or require expensive non-pasteurized apple cider vinegar, but some of the lab studies use purified acetate or (esp. in Japan) rice vinegar. For instance:

The current findings suggest that vinegar might help a person lose weight or fight obesity. Tomoo Kondo and colleagues gave acetic acid or water to mice via a stomach tube. All were provided a high-fat diet to eat normally.

Researchers found that the mice developed a lot less body fat (up to 10% less) than mice who didn't receive the vinegar compound. The amount of food eaten by the mice was not affected.

It's believed that acetic acid turns on genes that produce proteins that help the body break down fats. Such an action helps prevent fat buildup in body, and thwarts weight gain.
