Best of luck on your journey - this really is a wonderful way of life. Been on it for almost four months and gradually but really losing weight and never felt better!

[fast5] Re: Just Starting Out

hi!
i am in the same boat as you, mostly. i'm not overweight, but i decided to go with fast 5 in order to drop a couple of pounds and to maintain my weight after gaining (and losing!) the weight i gained from my freshman year. i also ate whatever i wanted until i was full and was super thin until freshman year where i gained about 20 lbs. i always had this uncontrollable hunger and ate until i was completely stuffed because i ate so fast! but being on fast 5 has really really helped me get that under control. i do minimal exercsie, maybe just daily walks to and from school, but i've had no problem eating until i am comfortably full, and still maintaining my weight! i may not have lost a significant amount of lbs but i have lost fat, and thats whats important. i feel much more denser, as other posters have observed and said i would feel despite no lb lost. i feel great, everything is so much better. i have more energy, sleep well, get up easily when i've gotten enough sleep, and more.

Then I had to see a doctor and nutritionist to put weight back on, which eventually I did. However, I feel like I have no inborn sense of what to eat or when to start or stop. I always feel (or rather think I'm) hungry, I never feel full unless I've overeaten. It's just been a mess and I'm completely emotionally drained, and I feel like my poor body just needs a break from constantly having food shoved down it, and the wrong ones at that. Thinking back to my younger years, when my body was naturally healthy, I never really liked breakfast, never finished my lunch, but always loved dinner. So I'm hoping my body just agrees more with this system if I give it time.

Re: [fast5] Re: I'm a Newbie!!

welcome Wendy! Its probably pretty normal to not feel so well at the beginning of starting this, when I started I really questioned myself whether I wanted to continue because i really felt awful, drained, nauseous, and had difficulty sleeping. I can't tell you how amazing I feel now, i'm glad i stuck it out. I don't feel like I have to eat hardly ever!! I am more than 170 pounds overweight thats more than 595,000 calories that I have to burn off extra, no wonder I'm never hungry haha! I sleep like a baby and have great energy during the day, my fatigue and cronic heartburn is gone, and i have such a little appetite!! I feel so great I can't emphasize that enough, its probably pretty silly looking to see a 340+ pound person hardly ever eat, best of luck to you!

[fast5] Re: I'm saying hello

I thought I made a post about talking to my doctor. I'm obviously still finding my way around here.

I hear and appreciate the guidance to work with my doctor while employing this plan. I'm afraid my doctor wouldn't be very encouraging, though. He isn't very creative in his practice or particularly open minded. He is tolerant of my opinions, though, which I appreciate, and I look forward to telling him in the future why I'm doing so much better (ever the optimist).

I'd stopped watching my diet and testing my bg levels at home - and was shocked to see at how out of control I'd become. A significant vision shift was what tipped me off, and that's a scary thing. Sure enough, on the morning I started testing again, my fasting blood glucose was 18.7 mmol/L! Mind you, I had the flu and some PMS, both of which will raise my bg levels, but still, I was in trouble and had to do something serious.

Re: [fast5] I'm a Newbie!!

I don't know what your weight loss goals are, but one thing that Fast-5 does
is that heals your "appestat" ... that system in your body that makes you
want to stop eating when you don't need food. If you have a significant amount
of weight to lose ... then your body doesn't need food, and it sends this
big red STOP sign telling you not to eat. That is what it is *supposed*
to do. So yes, a lot of people have been surprised and even a little worried
at how little they can eat.

This is just soooo different from most weight loss diets, where you are
forcing yourself every minute NOT to eat. But it is how the body is designed
to work. A person who is carrying say, 40 lbs of extra fat, does not need
extra food especially.

As for losing 10 "lbs" ... you can figure that a lot of that is water,
undigested food, bloating. Usually once things settle down, people
lose 1-2 lbs a week.

And welcome to this way of eating! From my experience on this group,
I'd say the success rate is rather good.

I just started the Fast Five Program on Monday. I have tried lots of diets and weight loss fads, and nothing has ever worked!! [fast5] Re: I'm saying hello

I'm fortunate in that I am am only taking metformin, and not any of the other meds that (typically) cause low bg levels.

I needed this plan, and am so grateful for it. I had my head in the sand about my diabetes for a while...

That what about 5 weeks ago. I've been eating low carb since which brought my fbg down to about 11. Now with Fast-5 and low carb, I'm starting to see all single digits in the morning. Whew. Yesterday it was 6.9.

I'm encouraged and very relieved. I even hope to see normal levels again someday.

This is day 9 for me. 4 mmol/L points off my fbg and 5 lbs lost. Pretty darn good.

RickS is correct -- the book says diabetics shouldn't engage in the Fast-5 plan *without a physician's supervision.* With a doctor's supervision, I would encourage it without reservation.

The reason for the extra caution is that diabetes introduces a number of variables, including a state of overall health that may range from relatively healthy to one that is very fragile. Further, unless one has a thorough understanding and monitoring of blood sugar and insulin, the shift to fasting could result in mismanagement of insulin and other antidiabetic drugs which could be dangerous.

I do encourage overweight diabetics to try the Fast-5 approach, because it has the potential to be very helpful and overweight diabetics have a lot to gain from both losing weight and simplifying their glucose/insulin response patterns. Further, weight loss with or without the Fast-5 way of eating may eventually restore normal insulin activity and eliminate the diabetes. Diabetics should discuss the plan, monitoring, and results with a physician so that it can be done safely.

I believe Dr Herring clarified his position here a few months back on this point. What he was trying to convey in the book is that diabetics and pregnant/nursing women shouldn't do Fast-5 not because it's particularly harmful, but because there haven't been any studies done on those demographics and he doesn't know what the effects would be exactly. I hope the good Dr. chimes in here to give his most current opinion on this.

I feel exactly the same way. I can go to lunch with people at restaurants and just drink tea and my friends or family think I'm stubborn and strong willed. When in actuality, it's very easy. I like to just sit and enjoy the smell of the food, and I've come to appreciate the smell as much as the taste since I've started Fast-5.

Those are pretty normal symptoms you describe as your body gets used to it. But since you're diabetic, I would definitely work with your doctor just to monitor your progress and/or change your medication if necessary.

[fast5] Re: Hunter Gatherers (Rick - incorporating organs and marrow...)

Probably mostly liver and onions. And I like dark rotisserie chicken meat- the thigh usually comes with a liver tucked up inside all that yummy fat and skin. ;) Chicken legs break pretty easily and have a little marrow. They even make little marrow spoons you can get to help get the marrow out.

I hear a lot of folks like beef rib marrow but I've read that mad cow can be transmitted from beef marrow (http://www.emedicinehealth.com/mad_cow_disease_and_variant_creutzfeldt-jakob_dis/article_em.htm) so I'll pass on that for now. Pork ribs may be another option.

Liver is my organ meat of choice, Beef or chicken. Chicken livers sold in store in a cottage-cheese type carton and calves liver is usually sold sliced and frozen in styrofoam tray. Fry up onion slices in lard coated pan, shove them aside and fry the liver in covered pan. Then pour all the juice and onions on top of the liver on the plate with a bit of salt and pepper.

Yum, Yum!

Here is Liver with Onions recipe from Optimum Diet site.
http://homodiet.netfirms.com/menu/day_four.htm

I plan on leaving a midday Thursday eating window open for all kinds of goodies, way beyond the lower carb I usually eat. Crescent rolls and pumpkin and pecan pie are jumping in along with the turkey. ;-)

We'll just have to count on Fast 5 to bail us out with such a large departure from our usual diet, for a special day.

Rick

How will you incorporate more organs and marrow in to your diet?

It's been my goal to have at least one organ meal/wk, but I've yet to buy
the stuff.

Guess that will be my first goal.

I just have no clue what to do with it once purchased!!

[fast5] I'm saying hello

Hi, all. I'm on day day 6 of the fast-5 plan and hoping for good
results. I'm type II diabetic, and although the book says diabetics
shouldn't engage in this plan, I suspect we are the first who should.

I'm encouraged by what I've read. I hope to see much lower fasting
blood glucose levels in the morning as my body heals, and of course,
losing weight will be a nice bonus. I could stand to lose 70-80 lbs.

At this particular moment, I'm more hungry right now than I usually am
while in the fasting phase. That could be because I have a roast in the
crockpot (smells amazing) and because I made my daughter an egg and
vegetable dish before she headed off to work. This is the most I've
been exposed to food while fasting this week. And now my son has put a
pizza in the oven. That isn't going to help.

The hunger doesn't really bother me though, and I'm surprised it
doesn't. I'm sure it's because I still eat everyday, and eat things
that satisfy. It is hunger without panic, which is a whole different
animal than the hunger of deprivation.

The biggest problem I have is that I am feeling a bit weak and foggy,
and I'm hoping, really hoping, these feelings are just temporary and
part of the adjustment period. I'd rather not 'treat' it by introducing
food before my eating window as a more gradual adjustment. Cold turkey
suits my personality better.

Anyway, that's where I'm at. And happy to be here.

Re: [fast5] Hunter Gatherers

That's been my take on paleo eating too. People take "paleo" to mean
"meat only", or "extremely low carb", but there are very few cases where
that is actually true, esp. in warmer climates. Human beings have
a limit on how much protein they can actually assimilate per day,
whereas the amount of fat and carb can be highly variable.

But what gets lost in the talk usually is the TYPE of carb and fat:
tubers can have a lot of polysaccharides and be extremely high
in nutrients (sweet potatoes are actually rather healthy!). And
"fat" can be essential or toxic (trans-fat).

Thanks for the article link!

[fast5] Re: Update #5 :)

Hi Sandi-

There was some talk about this a while ago and it boils down to habit. I think Dr Herring mentions this in the e-book as well. We are creatures of habit. 85-95% of the things we do during the course of the day are habits that we learned as children. What to say, how to talk, interpersonal mannerisms, eating habits... all of these things are passed on from our parents. Our brain's operating systems are generally written by age 6-7. It's INCREDIBLY hard to be conscious and present in everything we do. So we need to overcome the programmed notion that when you wake up, you shower, brush your teeth, get coffee, eat breakfast, get dressed, etc, whatever you do in the morning and throughout the day. Consciously skip the "eat breakfast" behavior and substitute something else in it's place. Dr Herring's book has a good list of other things to do when you would normally eat. It's all about breaking that pattern and consciously doing something else in it's place. Instead of walking into the kitchen at a certain hour, go outside for some air, or turn the other direction and go into a room that you don't usually go into. Pick up that book you've been trying to find time to read. It'll break the pattern.

Being musical, I like to think of skipping meals like rearranging the structure of a song or the notes of a scale. If my old scale was wake, bannana, bike, work, lunch, work, bike, snack, kids, dinner, bed, my new scale would be wake, shower, dressed, motorcycle, work, walk, work, motorcycle, dinner, kids, bed. Changed my tune, see? If I know what to expect I just change my expectation.

Best of luck to you, I hope this helped a little.

[fast5] Re: Update #5 :)

Karen --

Thanks for the insight about eating more fat and less carbs. I have to consciously work at that, because I'll admit since I started Fast-5 I haven't eaten exactly wonderful food -- with my November madness it's been all junk, and boy, can my body tell!

I am definitely carb addicted, and eating them at any meal absolutely saps my energy, makes me sleepy, etc. HATE that reaction. Unfortunately, LOVE the carbs.

But I also love how I feel when I'm fasting -- no blood sugar highs and lows, no problems with energy (I'm a naturally high-energy person anyway). So for at least 19 hours/day I'm feeling pretty fabulous.

I'll try to work more fat and fewer carbs into my diet and see how things work out -- I promise to report back here, too!

Hi Sandi

For me, the answer would be 'carb addicted'.

from this group, i learned that if you eat 'high carb' during your eating window, you would be 'hungrier' the next day.

i found that to be true for me.

and i found the more fat i ate, the more satisfied i was; not hungry.

so love it (even if i can't fast5 at this time)

Re: [fast5] Re: Update #5 :)

This group makes me so happy, everyone is so supportive! I really think it helps me to have a group of great people to report back to, because I still have temptations to eat breakfast but it helps me to think through how I'll feel if I eat it when I have to report back, I hope to continue losing weight and get under 200 pounds, I don't care the end result number if its at least got a 1 in front of it lol. Thankyou to everyone for all your help!              ~Jess

Jess --

You are an inspiration. Please keep posting about your progress -- it really helps me, and I'm sure many others!

Just 8 days till the end of November and my mad race to write a novel -- and when that's over I go back to exercising with a vengeance. Usually I walk and/or do a dance tape and/or a special aerobic breathing & weightlifting routine, at least five days a week, but this month I've hardly done anything. (I'm used to this -- have done this marathon for five years now -- so I'm used to more chocolate and less exercise during these 30 days.)

I still can't believe, though, that almost WITHOUT exercising, just keeping to my five-hour window, I've lost 5 1/2 pounds since November 1st -- and the month isn't over yet!

This is a great way of eating, esp. as it helps me cut down on the time I spend feeling fatigued as a result of (probably) overeating + eating carbs which make me sleepy and totally sapped of energy. I can go ALL DAY without eating, just drinking water or diet soda or tea and feel absolutely FINE.

I LOVE this! Naturally, my five-hour window on Thanksgiving will include a REALLY good dinner -- but the rest of the time I'll be at the computer writing and NOT thinking about food!

I have no more heartburn problems, before starting this I used to carry around a family size container of antacid in my car and had to carry them in my pockets to work, friends house, pretty much everywhere I went. If I didn't have my antacid I would be in almost suffering pain and it would cause me to choke and gag on the fluids which was really embarrassing in front of other people. I'm so shocked that I can leave them home now and not have to worry about choking at work. I'm really happy and feel like I'm really alive now. I know 12 pounds isn't alot but the feeling is so different!! I've even lost 2 inches off my waist so far. My double chin looks a little smaller too haha! I sleep so well like as if my body is at peace with food and I don't wake up during the night to eat and when i do wake I feel so refreshed and energetic and not hungry! I'm really enjoying this! Keep it up everyone! ~Jess

Hi Jess and everyone else,

I find it so interesting that so many of us have these same sentiments - I feel so much energy, I don't feel sluggish, I'm not hungry at all, I feel so free etc., etc., etc. Including me. So why am I not sticking to it this time around??? I know how great I feel when I eat this way and I honestly do have more energy and I get so much more accomplished throughout my day without having to take the time to eat and hem & haw about what to eat and then feel bloated and sluggish because I ate. So when I know how to avoid all these negative things and have the tools to avoid them (Fast-5) why do I keep falling into the 24 hr eating trap?

Thanks for listening,
