You can get Vit C from sea creatures (I think it was plankton?). Human
beings had a couple of severe genetic bottlenecks, but the only way
I can think that we survived was that most diets had "enough"
Vit C from somewhere. Most people don't get scurvy, after all.
And most of us crave fruit like crazy. But greens can have
alot of Vit C too.
But another thing that points to a vegie diet is that the lower
intestinal cells prefer butyrate as fuel. The butyrate also kills
tumor cells: so people on a high-butyrate diet don't get gut
cancer much. BUT ... if you eat butyrate (not that you are likely to,
it's what makes durian fruit stink) it doesn't reach your lower
gut, because it is absorbed. It takes certain polysaccharides
to 1) NOT get digested until the right spot and 2) Be able to
feed the right bacteria in the lower gut. Some people feel
some fats will do that also, notably butter. But butter has
never been a common food for most people.
Yet our need for B12 points to a need for meat too.
BTW this also has to do with weight loss, because when
your gut is happy people tend to eat less! My experience
is that not only does thirst get mistaken for hunger, but
also unhappy guts just keep craving food.

What possible evolutionary situation would have considered that to be a "good" trait and where can we get vitamin C without fruits or vegetables?
