However, for me, this effort has been completely easy. I am going to be 50 years old next week and have been overweight for about 15 years. After the birth of my fourth child the weight just didn't melt away like it always had before. Maybe my age at the time, maybe my body was tired, maybe the stress of that period of my life which caused me to turn to food for comfort, hard to say the reason; all those factors likely contributed. However, since then I've tried so may ways to lose weight I can hardly count them. The result was always the same, I lost weight. The problem, of course, is that after a 20-30 pound loss I'd fall off the wagon and be unable to face going back to the diet. So I've not only always gained it back but usually added a little more. So in 15 years I've managed to end up 85 pounds overweight. The thought of sticking with any of the diets I've been on long enough to lose that amount of weight is completely demoralizing. I am steadfast in my belief that diets that exclude any food group or even substantially limit them will eventually fail. At least for me. While I don't eat a lot of sugar or a lot of fat, as soon as you tell me I can't I start to feel deprived. With Fast 5 I am really, truly hopeful for the first time that I can actually lose all this weight and maintain it. I enjoy a nice healthy dinner and occasionally a modest serving of dessert. I don't feel the least bit deprived; in fact, I feel like I've been more indulgent than ever. An important contribution to that isn't the fact that I've been able to saute in butter or eat some of the Christmas cookies I've baked (yes, I've had years when I baked and didn't eat a single one because of my "diet"), it is the fact that it doesn't leave me feeling GUILTY. The psychological aspects of how we eat are a tremendous factor to be considered. Nothing I've ever tried feels as good as this does.

I learned that I was eating according to the clock and not my body so I experimented. I found that if I didn't get up and make myself the big healthy breakfast (that everyone from my mother to the media had made me believe I needed) that I didn't actually get noticeably hungry until about 12:30. So it became a no-brainer to see if I could live with the feeling of hunger for 4 1/2 hours a day if it meant I'd lose weight and be healthier (AND have a slice of good bread with butter on it with my soup for dinner!).

I read all the posts eagerly and am fascinated by the reports of the improvements in health. I am generally very healthy but my blood pressure and cholesterol levels have begun to creep up a bit in the past couple of years. I'm looking forward to seeing improvements in those numbers. I feel great.

I chronicle what it is like to let go of all the "stuff" I've accumulated. My first thought when I started this was to include what I'm doing in my blog. After all, I eat 5 hours a day, right? But I've decided to let my 365 days run out with things as they are and then if I'm still doing this I'll be able to share it with a little more credibility. In the meantime, I get to share it here. I haven't told anyone other than one of my daughters and it is interesting to me that nobody has noticed me not eating all day. So easy to say, "no thanks, I'm not hungry right now" and everyone has accepted that.
