Re: [fast5] Omega 3's

This is one of my reasons for my "Japanese diet" ... fish has been
the basis of the human diet for eons, and humans tend to live either
on bodies of water or on the coasts. We NEED iodine or we get
goiter, which says something right there. Grassfed beef has more
omega 3, but not as much as fish. Fish proteins also have interesting
effects on humans ... one of them lowers blood pressure, and they
make it easier to think (brain food!).

Tuna isn't a very ideal fish. It's too high on the food chain, and
doesn't have much fat. The better fish are the little fatty ones,
which usually eat plants or plankton. Learning to COOK fish
like that is a different thing: the cuisines to make them really
tasty are Asian. They eat them bones and all, which gives you
lots of calcium too. They cook them such that the bones get
crispy, like potato chips.

Also in terms of sustainability, the ability to grow lots of little
fish is becoming a big deal, with the new "aquaponics" movement.
I'm working on putting one in at our house. One pool can grow
100 lbs of fish for a family in about 6 months (about the same
as growing chickens) and you can also grow the feed for them
if you are organized about it (duckweed, worms, water hyacinths).
These systems grow amazing vegies too. With that plus Fast-5,
I think I could pretty much feed myself mostly? I think it's going to
be the wave of the future, actually.

As for losing weight: fish seem to regulate your appetite too.
They are extraordinarily filling and satisfying. The fish eating
countries are generally the skinniest countries.

For oils, I REALLY avoid all the vegie oils. Corn oil is used
in labs to give heart disease to mice. Canola oil isn't so
high in Omega 6, but in our family it seems to make us
sun-sensitive (and canola plants do that to goats too) and
make my lungs short of breath. The ones I do use are
coconut oil and olive oil. Coconut oil is pretty affordable
if you buy it in bulk. I use bacon fat for flavoring, which
likely isn't very healthy but it's tasty.

I don't know about the Omega 3 content of eggs, but
I do know homegrown eggs are way different from commercial
eggs. The Omega 3 content varies according to the feed
the chickens get: they do sell high-Omega-3 eggs at our
store. But we feed our chickens kitchen scraps, and
the eggs are just very different from the ones in the store.
The yolks stand way up and are extremely thick and orange.

I Japan, which arguably has the best kids diet (or did, I don't
know what is going on these days), one favorite for kids
is to mix a raw egg yolk in with their rice. I can't quite handle
that, so I cook the egg over-easy and then mix it in, which
does about the same thing. It is very, very yummy.

You also want to watch the potassium-sodium ratio in
your diet. Eating good stir-fried greens or big salads is
a good way to do that.

As for the government keeping this secret ... considering that
people like Dick Cheney had a bypass and so
did Clinton, and most of those senators are in really lousy
health ... most people in government don't know it either, or
don't believe it. It's all over the Internet though, for people who
care to look. Groups like this, where people experiment and
share their results, are making some of these really GOOD
food trends go viral. Dr. Bert gets my kudos for recognizing
this and using it to promote one very healthy (and thrifty,
ecological, etc.) way of eating.
