Bonito flakes are just that: shavings of dried bonito (a fish). It's a
common seasoning in Japanese cooking. They boil some bonito flakes and
kelp in water, and use that as the basis for dipping sauces and soups.
I tend to just sprinkle the bonito flakes on my meal as seasoning (I
like them) or mix them in my furikake. The flavor is very mild, and
they aren't very salty. See:

Good news about your goiter! I had no idea goiter was such a worldwide
problem until I was researching iodine (because of the Dermatitis
Herp.). Apparently the consumption of iodine in the US is way down,
because iodine is no longer used so much as a sterilizer on milking
machines and cows, or in making bread. And commercial vendors are not
required to use iodized salt, and the fewer people who cook and eat at
home, are using other forms of salt.
This might be something very relevant to Fast-5 too, because if you
eat less food, you will also be eating less salt. And if your iodine
gets low, it affects your thyroid, which affects weight loss.

It used to be difficult for me to swallow and I had coughing fits and I always lost my voice after talking loud for only ten minutes (at a concert or in a big crowd at a sporting event, etc.) My voice would be gone until the next morning. It still makes me cough a bit to talk loud, but it's definitely better.
