Interesting! I don't know a lot about hormonal issues, but I was
reading that konjac (a yam fiber) helps teens with acne a lot. But
it's unclear exactly why it helps ... it could be that it changes the
gut bacteria, or it changes the blood sugar curve, or something else
entirely.
A number of the people in groups I'm in that have PCOS have it
*because* of wheat, albeit the wheat they are eating is white bread
which is iron enriched. Right now I'm thinking that a lot of this
might be iron related, esp. acne ... bacteria and yeast just LOVE to
eat the iron in the blood. Whole grains mop up iron, to the degree
that they can cause iron deficiency in some populations. But get this:
http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/28/8/2042.full
Increased body iron stores are associated with insulin resistance and
type 2 diabetes. In conceptual agreement, increased serum ferritin
levels are positively associated with the prevalence of the metabolic
syndrome in men and adult pre- and postmenopausal women (1) and with
an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in both men (2) and women (2, 3).
Given that insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes
are frequent in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (4, 5),
we hypothesize that body iron stores might be especially increased in
these women.
In the summary they mention that they aren't sure if the high ferritin
is a result or the cause. If it is the *cause*, it would make sense
that the folks who grew up post-WW2 would have more PCOS and T2
diabetes, because they grew up in the age of fortified white bread and
breakfast cereals ... not much IP6 plus lots of iron.

For a long time, it seemed like low carb worked for everyone else around me so I thought it has to work for me too. I was so wrong on many levels.

I cannot tolerate birth control pills, had an awful pregnancy with horrible mood swings and an even more horrible case of post-partum depression. Plus, I gain weight in my midsection which is a good indicator of my insulin sensitivity. I have adult cystic acne that I thankfully keep in check with benzoyl peroxide and my periods, as the years have gone by, have gotten more irregular. I suffer from pretty extreme cases of PMS every month. My breasts get unbelievably sore and I cry like a child and get angry and irritable. I have learned that my body CANNOT handle processed junk food in any form. When I eat it, my body turns into a fat storage haven and I feel all around miserable.

As you mentioned, they help control metabolism and blood sugar because of their slow absorption. I might also add that the phytochemicals in the form of lignans really do act in sync with other hormones in the body to keep them in working order. They lower estrogen by binding with it and removing it from the body. On the plus side, I've always LOVED bran muffins, whole wheat bread, barley, cereals, etc. I guess that should've been my cue a long time ago.
