[fast5] Fast Five and Metabolism??

Fellow Fast Fivers,
I've been worried about this for a while...
The guidebook says that after a while, the calorie intake may fall to about 500 calories per day
equaling about 1 pound lost per week. (pg 17 on online book)
I know consuming little calories help weight loss but I also heard from another source that
the body actually adjusts to the low calorie,

Like if one was to eat 600 calories a day, the body would slow its metabolism down to use 600 cals per day.
Then there would be no weight loss or gain..??
I'm very confused on this. This is the only thing I don't understand about Fast-Five.
Please clarify! In layman terms, please, I'm still trying to grasp the basics of science =(

1. Would the metabolism slow down to adjust to a low calorie intake resulting in no weight gained
or lost?
2. How is it possible people actually lost dramatic amounts of weight on this diet?? What is going
on in our bodies?

I'm sorry to be pounding these questions here, but I really do want to know...it bothers me...please answer
back! I really do want to stay on this diet... but doubt is rising =(
