However, I did not expect to lose much of anything for a week or two, then lose at a rate of about a pound a week. I feel sure that things will probably level off very soon, and my weight loss will be near the 1 lb. per week average.

The first weeks of any diet are typically much water weight loss, not always great amounts of fat.
Have to stress again, don't get overly hung up on detail in book, experiment to find what works best for you. Many of us will not use the "marketing" 5 in the title but will follow what could more properly be described as a Fast-19 or longer. We will eat our 24 hours worth of food in less than an hour, thus a 23 hour fasting period.
Do yourself a favor and step OFF the scales, record tape measurement around your waist. That is the way you will get a truly accurate measurement of FAT loss changes. And, it will happen even with zero movement on the scales. Can't stress enough how so many put themselves needlessly into mental anguish because they think they are going into weight loss stagnation. We hear it all the time on this list.
They are most likely Not going into Fat loss stagnation. Pinch the Belly Fat is the best indicator. Your pants will fit looser.
Throw away the scales and pinch test the belly fat. Record tape measure readings to compare Fat loss weekly.
BTW, the new Dec. 28th released book by Gary Taubes "Why We Get Fat" is a good one, less than the 700 page technical treatise of his 2007 "Good Calories, Bad Calories" which people got hung up on it's greatly technical nature. Both books, Very much explains how it is Insulin which locks fat into the fat cells, making fat loss more difficult. Fasting puts our bodies into low Insulin levels, hence fat-loss benefits. A good explanation of why we lose Fat.
"Authorities" have spent YEARS falsely demonizing Dietary Fat, one would think that people would on their own concentrate more on measuring Body fat, instead of readings on Scales.
