In my opinion the point that's being missed here is that Fast-5 is really a way of eating, not a diet.  The point of the book as I see it was to educate people on the effects of fasting, not to preach dietary limitations -- in fact it frees many folks from the thought that they'd be required to eliminate food choices. 
 
I'd submit to the group that those of you who have struggled with weight loss have tried all manner of dietary restrictions and have found them to be short-term solutions, so I'm actually quite thankful that there's a minimum of dietary advice in Dr. Herring's book.  Seriously, there's enough of that out there (and here, bwahaha).   Generally speaking, your body metabolizes highly processed carbs/flour just like sugar.  Fast 5 reduces the number of daily insulin spikes so it will still work, but if you reduce flour and sugar to minor roles in your diet you'll probably do fantastic.
 
In my un-credentialed opinion, some simple math is really all the average person needs;  Muplriply your goal weight by 10 (not your current weight - the weight you feel is where you want to be).   Don't exceed that calorie count, and get a wide variety of nutrients.  If you exercise vigorously for more than two solid hours per week, add one to your multiplier for every hour over two  (in other words, if you exercise three hours a week, multiply by 11).  So, if you're 200 pounds and want to weigh 150, and you're working out three hours a week, keep your daily intake to around 1650 calories (150 x 11 = 1650). I got this formula from a Men's Health article a couple of years ago, and paired with the elegance of the Fast 5 method, it will work regardless of whether or not you substitute twinkies for tofu once in a while.

Undoubtedly, because you "followed Fast-5...By The Book", which in my opinion doesn't sufficiently point out the positives of "double-teaming" with the Lowered Insulin in Fasting Periods, combined with the Lowered Insulin from Low-Carb/High Fat foods in your eating session, which are also insulin lowering. Bert addressed that in a posting the other day about some using food selection in addition to fasting, but it's non-emphasis in the Fast-5 documentation, fools a lot of beginners to Fast-5.

Any who have studied Gary Taubes, Barry Groves, Eades, will know about the advantage of restricting carbohydrates.

The saturated fat, replacing some of the carb calories, also very much has "stick-to-the belly" properties which helps you fast more hours without hunger. Corporate-Gov'e controlled Media has spent YEARS wrongly accusing saturated fat.
