That was pretty much the traditional attitude in some older cultures. If something important was coming up, one didn't eat, so that one could remain focused and "light on your feet". Then after the battle or the hunt, everyone would feast.
When I was growing up the big thing was to be sure not to eat before swimming ... part of that was an old wive's tale, but it is true that you are more likely to get stomach cramps when you exercise on a full stomach.
I have found though, that some of the dizziness I would get during exercise wasn't from not eating or drinking, but from not getting enough electrolytes. Our family seems to excrete a lot of salt (possibly from one cystic fibrosis gene, which is pretty common). My Dad would take salt packets along when he went biking, to take if he got dizzy.

Since I had exercised my whole life on an empty stomach the first time someone ever suggested eating on a hike I was freaked out . (and still don't' do it, although I take nuts on hikes, just in case, but I never ever use them)
My whole theory on the exercise thing has always been that the body needs to just only send blood to the rest of the body during exercise. I don't want to eat before or during exercise (like a hike) because then the stomach needs more blood for digesting.......
At age 12 I started getting up at 5 to work out and became obsessed with it pretty much back then, so that's the mind set I'm coming from and what has stayed with me throughout my life

Ps-interesting too what you said Tamara. If I have something important going on that's always when I definitely don't eat. It's like ican't take my focus off that thing to be bothered with eating...... If I'm concerned about issues I'll carry protein in my purse "just in case", which pretty much I never end up using the small portions of things I carry in my purse, but they have been nice "insurance" at times so I didn't have to towrry if I was going to need something I couldn't' get to.....
