Re: [fast5] Gout?

I avoid high purine foods because of gout. I am not an expert, dieting can cause a build up of uric acid, heredity can be a factor, and poor kidney function.

A while ago somebody  mentioned that they had to eat low purine foods.  I am assuming it is because they have gout.  I have heard several times that the purines are only a problem on a high carb diet.  It came up today in the comments on Dr. Eades' blog.

I'd use kefir or yogurt (preferably made from raw milk), fruit, coconut oil and egg yolks. The book Nourishing Traditions has a good recipe called Cultured Milk Smoothie.

Our smoothies are mainly just fruit, but I have some "hemp protein"
powder that can add some heft. And coconut milk is good if you need
calories. I think adding gelatinous "seeds" to protein drinks does
help your gut and appetite ... the polysaccharides in certain seeds,
plus the oils, I think are a great dietary addition. That would be
flax, chia, hemp, psyllium. The polysaccharides, I think, help your
body get rid of toxins (they bind to bile) and also change the
bacterial mix in your colon, which makes people feel better (though if
you aren't used to eating them, you can get gas in the short run).
They also give you a sense of fullness and satiation.

I wouldn't worry too much about nutrients though. One thing Fast-5
appears to do is to re-regulate your appestat, and you'll find
yourself craving foods that your body actually needs. It's hard to
know what your body needs at any given time: no book can tell you. But
you have a really great chemistry set built into your brain, and it
knows exactly what minerals and vitamins and fats and protein levels
you need. It happens to be "turned off" for most Americans, because, I
think, we've just been feeding our bodies wrong for too long.

I do take a cal/mag/d/k pill (Costco: they are cheap) because I don't
do dairy and I don't think most sources of calcium are very digestible
by humans. My bones, according to the Dexa scan, have remineralized
nicely. I also take extra Vit C, because the human need for it seems
to be a lot higher than what one can get with what we eat. And B12,
because older women have a problem getting enough of it from food. I
like the idea of getting nutrition mostly from food, but we just don't
eat like our ancestors ate. The Japanese, for instance, don't do
dairy, but they DO eat whole fish with the bones still in ... which is
great for calcium ... but I just am not used to doing that.

Anyway, you might end up doing this for a few weeks and then suddenly
get a craving for broccoli or a big salad or pineapple ... just go
with it. Most people seem to find they just don't want the junk food
so much. It does seem to make the diet go easier if you eat more
protein and less starch, which actually makes life simpler if you are
gluten-free anyway.

[fast5] Re: Fast-5 & Surgery

My approach would be to follow my appetite, without following a particular schedule, for a few days to a week or so after surgery, until pain control medication is no longer necessary and most normal activities are comfortable. The surgery, anesthetic, and pain medication may have a profound effect on both your appetite (up or down) and circadian (daily) rhythm. The amount of tissue repair needed after a hysterectomy (especially if its laparoscopic/transvaginal) isn't trivial, but it's not huge either, so a making a deliberate bump in protein intake may be helpful but not essential if you maintain a reasonably balanced diet.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery,

Bert

Okay on to my question - I have to have surgery in August (hysterectomy) and am wondering about Fast-5. Should I stay on it or go back to eating more often? For reference, I usually break my fast with a snack of nuts or trail mix and then eat dinner. In other words, I don't normally eat 2 meals in my 5 hour window. I'm just not sure if I will get enough protein (for healing) in that one meal and snack. Dr. Bert or anyone have any suggestions for me?

I had a small surgery last summer and at that time I didn't change anything but again, I just had a small lump removed from my axilla and not a hysto so I won't even try to answer that question but I wish you well in your surgery and recovery.

I've gotten rid of a lot of major problems, though Fast-5 was just part of it. I like the fact that there IS a lot of good science backing up the ideas, unlike pretty much everything else I've done in the past.

The thing that really helped me originally though was going gluten-free ... I never did get diagnosed officially with celiac but my gastro NOW says that is what was going on. Thing is, the antibodies that are produced in that condition can lead to a lot of what you are dealing with here. Fast-5 really, really helps treat gluten issues too, which is why I do it. The gut gets severely messed up by years of eating gluten and having a reaction to it (think of living with a dog if you have a dog allergy). This leads to antibody problems where the antibodies attack your pancreas, liver, thyroid, etc., which can lead to blood sugar problems. Again, this is backed up by a lot of science.

Getting *tested* for it is another thing though, because most docs just don't think of it and think it is a very rare problem. Now though there is another problem, which is that everyone is saying "it's just a fad". It's not a fad, it's a real disease, and it is very, very common. And deadly.

So if you want to do some *more* homework, you might want to peruse, say:

He's a veterinary doctor, which is an interesting take on things. I think his first (and excellent) writeup is under the "The answer" link.

Fast-5 helps with this ... it cured me of some lingering gut issues (though I still come up with new tweaks!). Doing F5, when I actually get exposed to gluten it just doesn't affect me as much, and I'm less reactive to *any* food. I used to have to take enzymes to digest food, because basically I just don't produce enough of them anymore, probably due to organ damage. But on F5 I don't: I eat a meal and it doesn't really matter if it has a lot of fat, a lot of meat. Too much sugar is still problematic unless I take glucomannan with the meal.

Anyway, kudos to you for keeping an open mind, and trying out things to see what works!

Hi everyone,
I am really finding this way of life interesting and what makes it so
interesting is that there is research to back it up.
I am 42 and after 25 years of insulin resistance it has really messed up my
body. I diagnosed myself off the internet after my doctors failed to tell me
what was wrong. I would gain 30lbs in one month and they would tell me to
just stop eating.

My health problems are:
PCOS
severe hypertension
gerd
abdominal obesity
75 lbs overweight
mild cardiomyapathy from the high blood pressure
candida
depression
Acanthosis nigricans
fatigue

The good news is that after doing my research every one of my problems has
been shown to get better with IF.
My doctor is not supporting me on this. All he wants to do is give me pills
and more pills to counteract all the side effects. Then tell me to come back
in 6 weeks.

I have found a naturopath doctor willing to work with me on this IF. He says
there is no reason that I have to stay on these meds for life.
He thinks 100% of my problems are from the insulin resistance.
I amso looking forward to doing this way of life. I have a 5 year old and I
really do need to get better.
Anybody else on here got rid of any major diseases or disorders? I would
love to hear it.
Thanks so much,

Phyllis

Ha! A web serch on bonking will indeed pull up the sort of bonking you're
thinking of! ;)

Bonking is generally when a long distance athelete (running, cycling)
completely runs out of muscle glycogen. It's also known as "hitting the
wall". It's extremely dangerous and painful and can make you fall off your
bike or fall over while running. It takes days to fully recover. Of course
the other kind of bonking can cause some of the same symptoms if you're
lucky. ;)

RE: [fast5] conquerring 'hunger' - was: After 3 weeks, why do I eat less?

It’s tough, too, when you’re the cook and you fix b-fast and lunch and are fasting….

My tummy has been funny today.

I only had a 12-hr fast Monday and Tuesday (my lifting days).

Today I’m going for the full 19-hr fast.

My tummy was growling by 430 this morning.

Hit me again when I got done doing my cardio at the gym (7am).

Went with my kid to his weight training session at school and fixed bfast for the family when we got home (930am) and my tummy has been screaming at me the whole time!

Grrrrr!

[fast5] Re: 30-miles bike riding fasted!

Hi Karen-

Thanks for the encouragement. ;)

I'm not sure what you experienced was a "bonk". Sometimes you can feel weak if you haven't eaten or slept enough. And that can really make lifting miserable. In the winter, some folks require more calories, or at least feel like they require more calories. Here's a good article that explains carb loading and IF and why I'm not convinced you were bonking:

http://www.fitnessspotlight.com/2008/05/27/how-does-intermittent-fasting-affect-carb-loading/

So if you were running or cycling for several hours and THEN lifting, you may have bonked. Or if you were just on a very low carb diet, I mean VERY low carb diet, you could have *POSSIBLY* run out of muscle glycogen and hit the wall.

Unfortunately for those of us who participate very unnatural activities like weight lifting, long distance running, cycling, we have to bump up our carb intake. No amount of evolution has prepared us for the system load that we subject ourselves to every week with our favorite exercises. Paleolithic folks did a lot of squatting, walking, hunting, gathering, lifting... not so much cycling. ;) Most folks do great on low carb diets, but when you throw exercise in the mix, you have to get enough carbs to fuel it. This doesn't mean to eat a big plate of pasta and rice every night. But we just have to make sure we get an extra apple or potato or banana (or all of the above) to make sure that muscle glycogen gets replenished for our next unnatural bout of exercise.

I'm glad it's all working for you now though. You could have also been Vitamin D deficient over the winter. So yeah, nutrition is key for the powerlifter! ;)

[fast5] Re: After 3 weeks, why do I eat less?

Yeah, I've found that I generally go bonkers and pig out only when I'm in the kitchen. So I just stay away from the kitchen, or from my daily habits or patterns that lead me into the kitchen. I'll take the dog for a walk, or go out back and do some pull ups, or go into the garage and work on a project, or go clean a part of the house that's been neglected for too long. Basically, anything I can think of to stay away from the kitchen. Then, if I have to go into the kitchen, I just remember it's easier to say no to the first snack than it is to say no to the second or third.

These are great responses; I truly appreciate everyone's input on this
group!!

On the hunger, tho, and 20 minutes...

I find that I'll feel hunger at a certain time during the day. I just
increase my water intake and keep busy. It might come back and bug me a
couple of times, but then it will go away for several hours. Then it comes
back and we go thru the same cycle again.

Fasting can be such a mental game, eh?

I do not believe you should eat in the absence of true physical hunger just
as I do not believe one should bypass hunger. Twenty minutes is long enough
for the brain to send the fullness signal.

RE: [fast5] switching length of eating window - Re: After 3 weeks, why do I eat less?

This is my main concern over switching my intermittent fasting days….

I was going to keep to a 12-hr fasting window on lifting days then switch to the 19-hr fast on resting days.

I’ve done this for the past week and have been ok, however.

Guess I’ll keep going till it bites me.

Yeah, hunger is mostly a hormone-induced illusion. Your body has an entire system to make you feel hungry so you'll eat. You have more nerves dedicated to your gut than to your brain (really).

But it doesn't turn on when you actually RUN OUT of glycogen or fats in your blood. No way! It's smarter than that. It turns on when you are accustomed to eating ... like a dog that knows it is time for dinner even though it already ate some potato chips from behind the couch.

Re: [fast5] Re: After 3 weeks, why do I eat less?

Yeah, hunger is mostly a hormone-induced illusion. Your body has an entire system to make you feel hungry so you'll eat. You have more nerves dedicated to your gut than to your brain (really).

But it doesn't turn on when you actually RUN OUT of glycogen or fats in your blood. No way! It's smarter than that. It turns on when you are accustomed to eating ... like a dog that knows it is time for dinner even though it already ate some potato chips from behind the couch.

Anyway, scientists are just now beginning to discover how it all works. But a fair number of chemicals are involved: it's not "all in your head". The grouchiness/etc. though aren't actually your body running out of fuel generally: it's your body producing cortisol, which makes you feel grouchy and hungry. Exercise actually helps fight that, and lemon-juice-water works for me.

Re: [fast5] 30-miles bike riding fasted!

I haven't been around here for a while, but WTH is 'bonking'? My last
recollection was that it's an activity carried out on a horizontal
recreational device!

:)
