Hi Karen-
Thanks for the encouragement. ;)
I'm not sure what you experienced was a "bonk". Sometimes you can feel weak if you haven't eaten or slept enough. And that can really make lifting miserable. In the winter, some folks require more calories, or at least feel like they require more calories. Here's a good article that explains carb loading and IF and why I'm not convinced you were bonking:
http://www.fitnessspotlight.com/2008/05/27/how-does-intermittent-fasting-affect-carb-loading/
So if you were running or cycling for several hours and THEN lifting, you may have bonked. Or if you were just on a very low carb diet, I mean VERY low carb diet, you could have *POSSIBLY* run out of muscle glycogen and hit the wall.
Unfortunately for those of us who participate very unnatural activities like weight lifting, long distance running, cycling, we have to bump up our carb intake. No amount of evolution has prepared us for the system load that we subject ourselves to every week with our favorite exercises. Paleolithic folks did a lot of squatting, walking, hunting, gathering, lifting... not so much cycling. ;) Most folks do great on low carb diets, but when you throw exercise in the mix, you have to get enough carbs to fuel it. This doesn't mean to eat a big plate of pasta and rice every night. But we just have to make sure we get an extra apple or potato or banana (or all of the above) to make sure that muscle glycogen gets replenished for our next unnatural bout of exercise.
I'm glad it's all working for you now though. You could have also been Vitamin D deficient over the winter. So yeah, nutrition is key for the powerlifter! ;)
