[fast5] Growing lettuce/ container gardening

Thanks for explaining. My current pot of lettuce growing is very experimental but very exciting as it is growing good! I have been checking water frequently and giving it lots as needed.....

Its on the south side of the house, but in an area that is actually very shaded much of the day (by the house) My north side this time of year has full sun most of the day, although I have a deck on that side that would be perfect for this type of thing most likely.....as it is covered......

I have not fertilized yet....i started my seeds right in this container and didn’t really do it in any proper manner per se, but decided to experiment and see what happened.... I am glad to read what you wrote about that as that would work a lot better than how I did it, I’m sure....

It is WAY easier than anything I've done in the past. I've done several different SIPs, and they all worked for lettuce. Mostly it just wants to be wet and cool in the roots.

Also, it wants good fertilizer. The best one I've used to date is granular fish fertilizer. The liquid stuff is amazing too, but harder to use (you have to mix it, while the granular stuff you can just add to the soil).

Doesn't seem to want much sun though. So if you have a north-facing balcony, that is just fine.

Starting the seed well makes a big difference in terms of "making it easy". The easiest way is to use an egg carton with potting soil. Plant one or two seeds ONLY in each spot, plus a few grains of fish fertilizer. Set the carton in a tray, and add water to the tray so it soaks up to the seed. Keep the egg carton wet.

Then to plant the lettuce, just cut one egg section, with the plant, and put it in the new pot. Easy.

I'll get some pics of this too. I mention it because "transplanting seedlings" was always one of my least-fun things. I always planted too many seeds, and didn't want to kill the extras. Which made all of them not grow very well. This way is far easier.
