No question that we must exercise more as we age just to keep from losing muscle. I have read in Dr. Bernstein's book, The Diabetes Solution, that you can't build muscle when your blood sugar and your insulin levels are too high. Something you might look into as part of your cycling experiment, if you find you are not building muscle the way you would like.
Fast 5 helped with my insulin resistance. It was only after I lost the weight that I understood it must have been because my insulin levels were brought into a more appropriate range by the fasting and that I had been insulin resistant for a long long time.. My constant hunger was because I had too much circulating insulin. Now my appetite is "normal".... this is not the me I have been for most of my life. I still am having slightly elevated blood sugars and am trying to sort it all out. I sure wish I had understood all this when I was younger. It might have been easier to fix back then.

Subject: Re: [fast5] Hello and thinking about doing the Fast 5
"After my first 6 month of Fast 5 I ate three meals a day for abut 8 months. The weight stayed off and my appetite was in control. I went back on for about 6 months and am now eating three meals a day. Mostly I have gone back to "normal eating' as experiments to see the effect on things like my blood lipids. I actually prefer FF."
Give it a try.

Ellen,I am glad to read this on your post response on another subject. I have recently completed my 6 months on Fast 5. I give it a lot of credit for, what Dr. Bert Herring and his Fast 5 eating plan, has done to my health, weight loss, recent blood profile result, body, etc., among other things. This lifestyle has given me a better outlook on my "getting younger" [aka Aging] adventure. Doing Fast 5 has led me to become very proactive with, and I have since been engrossed with reading/researching about health and fitness.Anyhow, with Fast 5 I have lost 38 pounds as of May 31 from 187 lbs. when I started, January 5, 2009. That's the plateau; weight goes up 3 lbs. and down by 3 lbs. to 149 lbs. The weight is not the issue for me at this point of time. Although, I workout regularly and increase my protein intake to what was suggested here previously, the flabs, the body fats, become more prominent especially in the lower abs, neck, and upper arms. Like I said, I was and still looking for some answers, solutions. I read about Sarcopenia [got me really concerned], the loss of muscle mass and function, is an important consequence of aging, about Fat Burning, High Intensity Interval Training, Carb cycling, Caloric cycling, Insulin, Leptin, etc.Bottom line, I have started doing what I called Fast 5 Cycling, nothing concrete yet in terms of exactly how. There will be more days during the week when I am completely off Fast 5 and start eating breakfast while my regular big meal and munching are still within the Fast 5 eating window. At the same time, I will throw in the carb cycling and caloric cycling. This maybe doing the trick to my body. I have been noticing that I am building/regaining muscle, my lower abs is getting smaller. Yet, as of this morning, my end of week weight is at 154. Oh, I have also added bodyweight training and flexibility exercises to my workout routine. Living by myself and not really know how to cook, Fast 5 is very convenient for me. For now, the cycling continues. So far so good. This is and I am still a work in progress. I will keep you all posted.EJ
