My closest friend at work regularly tells me that he thinks I don't eat enough.  I keep reminding myself that I could go 3-5 weeks without eating at all and survive as long as I was drinking water, so I will not get weak and ill if I follow the fast-5 7 days a week instead of just 5.

Wow. You are really going through a lot.

Yes, it's hard to get support for this way of eating right now. I
don't think that will continue, personally ... there is too much
science behind it, and too much tradition. Think about your religion.
It supports fasting once a week. So do many other religions. WHY?
Because, no doubt, people noticed that "not eating" was at least as
important as "eating". Just like "sleep" and "not sleep" are both very
important.

But that is one reason why Dr. Herring created this group, I suspect.
For support. People are here to support each other.

As for the "Eat all day long mentality" ... this was mainly invented
by the people selling snack foods. Seriously ... there was a special
on a potato chip company trying to make inroads into the European
market. They don't sell potato chips much there, because, say the
potato chip makers, the Europeans never got into the "snack" habit. So
the sellers are first trying to change the culture, to get the idea of
"snacks" across.

This happened long ago, in the U.S. We've been sold on Pringles and
vitamin drinks and all the rest, and a huge industry has resulted. But
it has zero to do with health, culture, or history. George Washington
didn't have snack foods, nor, probably, did Teddy Roosevelt. Mostly
people ate 1-3 meals a day, but usually (unless you were pretty
wealthy and had servants) it was 1 big meal. This was even true when I
was a kid! And people were a lot skinnier back then.
