Re: [fast5] Need help!

The book has some good references. But really, there has been a lot
of study on this. If I was handling a 23-year-old, I'd probably say
something like:

"Look, I've researched this, and I can point you to the book.
But if you haven't researched it yourself, PLEASE don't lecture
me. I don't have time to educate you".

Seriously. The "snob" approach works a lot better than the
"trying to justify myself" approach. Human beings are
wired to respect snobs, but they don't respect "snivellers".
Which is not something I like about human beings, but
there it is.

The other approach that works very well is: "Look. I'm
doing an experiment. I've researched this as well as I
can, and the experiment is going well. I think it's going
to work. You think it's not going to work. Put your money
where your mouth is. Will you bet me $25 that I'm wrong?"
(Set some specific goal here).

As a person who has lived a very, say, "experimental" life,
I can say that there will always be people who disagree
with you. Fine. They keep me honest, they make me
think things through. And bets really keep me on track,
I love them! But so far, no one who has challenged me
has been *right*. Mostly they have been the status quo,
and it turns out that what I was reading and experimenting
with ended up being the "next thing". After several decades,
my siblings look at what I'm doing and say "I just want to
see what you are doing, because I'll probably be doing
it 10 years from now". Which makes me laugh, whoda thunk?

But what has never worked for me is trying to justify what
I'm doing. People just get riled when you do that. Far
better to act like a snob or an experimenter. That relieves
them from the role of "rescuer of stupid victim" and they
can relax. Or spend the time and read the book. IF
is "the next big thing", IMO. It just works too darn well.
