I have had some problems with a slow thyroid. I was able to stay off of thyroid drugs by taking kelp powder. Sometimes I sprinkle it in my food, other times I take a capsule.
Be careful not to take too much kelp. I take 1/4 tsp or 1 capsule.
Also avoid sugary foods, bad for thyroid.
I'm not sure if other types of seaweed have iodine.

It used to be difficult for me to swallow and I had coughing fits and I always lost my voice after talking loud for only ten minutes (at a concert or in a big crowd at a sporting event, etc.) My voice would be gone until the next morning. It still makes me cough a bit to talk loud, but it's definitely better.
