I'd also point out that in the iron studies, it is the *drink* you have with
meals that determines iron absorption. Soft drinks are not only higher
in salt and sugar, they are also high in acids that make iron
absorb.
I don't think "calories" are the issue here, per se. The Chinese business
guys eat more calories than their American counterparts (adjusted
for exercise levels) and stay skinnier. But they drink a lot of tea, and
they don't eat much beef.
Also: juice drinks, in terms of iron absorption, are just as bad
as Coke. Suzanne Sommers might be onto something. Don't
eat fruit with your meat meals. (or drink Coke with your chips ...
potatoes are high in iron too).
