I was a wimp too ... til I tried it. The new "stickers" are pretty much
painless. And automatic. Very little blood is needed. Most people
think of the Dr. office blood sticks, and THOSE hurt! The little
sticks needed for glucometers though, are really not much, even
for wimps. Way less painful than when I go pick blackberries
(which leave me looking like I fought with the cat).
My problem was sheer embarrassment. It was like being in high
school buying a condom. I felt like a fraud, buying a glucometer
for no particularly good reason except my own insane curiosity.
It was especially a problem because I live in a small town, and
the pharmacist KNOWS me. So I drove to the next town to buy
one.
Anyway, it's really really easy to know your blood glucose. It's
a fun experiment, and legal! Not even immoral, AFAIK. If you have
kids, you can probably get them a great science fair experiment
(glycemic value of foods, anyone?).
