[fast5] Just beginning

I just started the Fast-5 program and successfully completed my first week. I started the program after listening to my crossfit trainer talk about it, and how he and several of the other trainers have had positive results. I wanted to know what types of negative things others have heard about the program. Whenever I mention to people what I am doing, they jump all over my case, especially anyone in the fitness business (Crossfitters excluded) likes to point out how unhealthy this is? Currently this seems like the diet for me, very liberating and simple.

RE: [fast5] Re: Newbie

Maybe have more fat in your meal if you feel sleepy later. That is
something I have struggled with for years and think I have just figured out!

I home school my two youngest and can't be sleeping on the job! :)

I'm proud to say I've been doing F5 since December 17th, 2008 and haven't missed a day yet. The thought of eating breakfast in the morning anymore just feels wrong... ;)

Re: [fast5] Re: Irritability

i did FF for 6 mos last year.      Took about 6 months off.  Then went back on in December.  I have found that over all my moods have evened out greatly and irritablilitly has decreased.  But I do think that something may happen when you eat your first meal or snack.  It may be because you are eating too many carbs which shoots your blood sugar up and the you get an isuling rush bringing it back down.  That roller coaster   effect can definitely cause mood swings.  Try having some protein and fat  and a small amount of slower acting carbs, if any, when you first eat.

Some people do it the way you suggest. The "eat like a king in the morning"
school is pretty much an AM Fast-5. I do 12-5 usually, because our company
provides lunch and it's hard to pass up. Other people have posted their
times and they are all over the place. It depends on what works for you, I
think. Evening is easier for a lot of people, esp. if that's the time you have

Re: [fast5] Re: Newbie

I can't do goat milk either, but they are really easy to keep. I have two fiber
goats (angoras) and they also mow our yard. Our neighbors got a milk goat
though, to feed a baby colt, and it was really an easy animal to keep. Docile,
small, gave a gallon of milk a day for the cost of grass! The milk was delicious
too. Still gave me "milk symptoms" (I get really, really cold and then get
brain fog, and migraines later). So it's worth testing before you invest.

The goat cost her something like $75 ... not pricey. One thing though:
you need to keep them protected. A mountain lion ate one of the neighbor's
goats lately, and dogs get them too. My angoras have horns and they
fight mean, and I haven't had a problem with them getting attacked (if
a dog comes around they attack it! They also used to knock my kid
down before she got big enough to grab them first). But the milk goats
are not so feisty.

Also, you MUST milk them daily (2x a day I think). And probably learn
to make cheese (it's easy) or kefir, because you'll have way more milk
than you can use. But if you like goat milk, it's worth it! It doesn't
taste "goaty" unless its' old or unless there is a ram around.

I love yogurt but find I react to it too. It might be that it is made with pasterised milk and that is the problem. Is why I am so determined to detox.... I heard that with each liver detox more and more allergies disappear.. Well I only have the dairy that I am aware of. (Sugar intolerance is different I think and I just stay away.) This programme is the ultimate way for me to detox because I can do it!!! : )

What is the issue with juicing lemons, exactly? It's really easy. But
there are very
cheap "juicers" which allow you to juice, say, a huge bag at once and
then freeze it.

RE: [fast5] anna - how long on Fast-5 ?

I’m sure this question is directed at Rick, the OP, but I will share my story.

I think I started Fast5 in July of ’09.  My lifting partner got wind of it in about October and had an absolute fit, now knowing that I was weight training FASTED!  He said, “No wonder you’re crashing while we lift!!”.  And I gave up.  It was true; I was ‘crashing’ while lifting and not getting the lifts I used to get; frustrated.

After gaining 10-12 lbs over the holidays, I went back to Fast5 until the end of February when I had to start taking an antibiotic twice/day.

So I currently am not fasting (although I CAN fast between doses and often do that on a weekend or my weekly ‘rest’ day).

Today and tomorrow, then I’m done w/my meds and can consider Fast5 once again.

In the interim, I am learning how to eat ‘regular’ meals throughout the day w/o getting the appetite roaring its ugly head.

RE: [fast5] New & question

Welcome!  I don’t have an answer for you, tho!  I’m just the opposite!  If I START eating, it is hard to stop, so opening my eating window later in the day is what has worked for me.

But, in reality, I think a19-hr fast is a 19-hr fast whether broken in the morning or in the evening.

But the question is, since everyone seems to advocate eating late in the day (Fast-5 originally, as does Leangains, as do pretty much all other IF'ers who eat daily that I know of), does it make a difference?

Again, look forward to meeting all of you, best wishes!

Re: [fast5] (Lemon water) freezing juice - was: Help, advice, once again...?

They have really NEAT ice cube trays these days too, at the supermarket. The
bottom part is silicone and they are called "easy out" trays or something
like that. They make really tiny ice cubes. Lots of different shapes too.
We have some in the shape of legos, pirates, the Titanic ...

[fast5] Re: Fast-5 bad for the economy?

Hi, Rick. That's why our economy strugles. LOL
Can't believe that the numbers are that high. You did a great math. I am a BIG frapuchino lover and used to buy Grande Coffe Frapuchino every day, in the summer sometimes twice, with this economy - can't afford that, but when I don't buy that drink because I don't have money, I fee bad/sad, but when I am passing on Starbacks just because I am on F5, I feel so great and I do, like you, save a lot of money.

RE: [fast5] (Lemon water) freezing juice - was: Help, advice, once again...?

I had a bunch of chicken broth and thought of freezing it, but haven't
yet...

'how much do I need at a time?'

'how much should I freeze?'

The same, now, with this concept of squeezing lemon juice...

If you only use a tsp/day..... how do you freeze that? :-P

What is the issue with juicing lemons, exactly? It's really easy. But
there are very
cheap "juicers" which allow you to juice, say, a huge bag at once and
then freeze it.

[fast5] Irritability

Hi All,

First of all, let me just say how impressed I am with you guys who have been sticking to the plan. I've been taking stabs at it for a couple months now, but have not gotten past a week yet.

Actually, I feel really good when fasting during the day, and food is so much more enjoyable when I eat. Also, I can tell that for me, the weight will definitely come off if I stick to it, as I have a fairly high metabolism already.

One of the biggest problems I have, however, is getting irritable and being a bit of a monster by the end of the day, which happens to coincide with going home to small children, which doesn't exactly soothe the frayed nerves.

Right now, I'm back to eating breakfast in the morning, mainly for the above reason. I guess the next step for me is to try what Dr. Herring actually strongly recommends, which is gradually working up to the 19 hours instead of jumping right in. So I'll give that a try soon.

But I just wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience with irritability, and if so, did it subside or how did you deal with it?

Best,
Chet

[fast5] Re: Newbie

Hi Karen,

This eating lifestyle amazes me too. I have gone on fasts before because I knew it was healthy but the second and third day were so terrible.... so weak I was barely productive and made me feel pretty low... I love to be busy. But with this programme the fasting benefits kick in without the lousy side-effects. 19 hours seems so perfect somehow. I do wilt a little before due to eat but I just drink a herbal tea and it helps psychologically and I am pretty sure my body is getting conditioned. WIth low blood sugar having dominated my days... always having to snack... it was a pain. I would take boiled eggs if going to be out a while. That is what I meant by eat quickly... just eat an egg or protein bar when symptoms came. Always protein...never sugar. Now I am just stretching my body towards longer and longer but with care and it is working! The continual snacking might actually not be the best way to handle this! Condition your body to feed off ketones and no insulin triggering all the time ... but this takes many hours after eating. I notice that I need a nap after eating... about an hour later... but am working at home so is OK... and then I feel fabulous. My body is obviously still adjusting to kicking over into ketone use or something... not sure but is how I see it. : )

[fast5] Re: Newbie

Thanks Carolyn.

I am planning on getting myself a milk goat because I heard this. Access to goat milk is difficult as I live in the country and no neighbours are selling this milk. : )

[fast5] New & question

Funny, doesn't everyone start their first post with this exact headline?

I just want to check in and say hello, I'm new to this lovely list, although I've been reading through the messages for quite some time.  I'm 28, and I live in the UK.  Look forward to meeting y'all on here.

I got into IF by reading the famous blog entry at Protein Power, where Dr Eades talked about 24 hour on/ 24 hour off eating.  I did that for quite some time, but have struggled with hunger so much that I've finally admitted defeat.  If I ate in the morning I'd be fine, but waiting until evening the next day for my next meal was very very difficult.  I'm one of those people who really do wake up hungry, and I stay hungry throughout the day if I don't eat.

I'm a little concerned about whether this approach (Fast-5), which still includes daily eating, will still yield the results the Eades were talking about... what have your experiences been?  I'm not grossly overweight but I do want to lose about 15 lbs.

My real question, though, is this: as I'm very much a morning eater, as I said I wake up hungry and stay hungry, eating late in the day really doesn't work well for me.  So I'd like to put my 5 hour window into the morning - breakfast at 8, lunch finished by 1.  I really don't struggle with hunger late in the day.  But the question is, since everyone seems to advocate eating late in the day (Fast-5 originally, as does Leangains, as do pretty much all other IF'ers who eat daily that I know of), does it make a difference?

Again, look forward to meeting all of you, best wishes!

See all the ways you can stay connected to friends and family

[fast5] Fast-5 bad for the economy?

I was feeling a little whimsical this morning and I figured out that Fast-5 may be making a bigger dent in the economy than I had imagined! ;)

I generally save about $200 a month by not eating breakfast and lunch. There are 1084 members of this group, not to mention how many people may have downloaded the book and are doing it. But for the sake of silliness and assuming that all 1084 members (except Karen) are on Fast-5, I took 1084 and multiplied that times $200 and then times 12 for how many months in a year.

Do you know we collectively may be saving $2,601,600 a year by doing this? Good job everybody!

Come to think of it, and to be more accurate, I save about $200 every four weeks... that's $50 a week times 52 weeks... which is $2600 a year times 1083 (excluding Karen ;) )... for a grand total of $2,815,800!! That's almost 3 million dollars folks! Niiiice...

What is the issue with juicing lemons, exactly? It's really easy. But
there are very
cheap "juicers" which allow you to juice, say, a huge bag at once and
then freeze it.

I haven't found a problem with the bulk juice "from concentrate"
though. Yeah, it has
some preservatives, but lemon juice just doesn't need MUCH preserving.
Fresh certainly
is nice though. All this talk of lemons induced me to buy a bag of
lemons. Cut it in half,
a twist of the wrist, and EXCELLENT juice!

Re: [fast5] Re: Diet Pepsi (Merz)

You should not fast while you are nursing.  Just make a vow to eat raw and you and the baby will be healthy.

When I was nursing, any drop in calorie consumption lead to a drop in my milk production and the quality of milk (evidenced by cranky, never-satasfied babies). I think Karen is right, up your calories when you eat... remember, while you are nursing your body is on loan to someone else. Maybe now is not the best time to restrict your calories if you are the sole provider of nourishment to your baby. And the fact that you aren't losing may be further evidence that your body is needing more calories to produce.. so it is holding on to every last ounce on you! Good luck.

[fast5] Re: Diet Pepsi (Merz)

When I was nursing, any drop in calorie consumption lead to a drop in my milk production and the quality of milk (evidenced by cranky, never-satasfied babies). I think Karen is right, up your calories when you eat... remember, while you are nursing your body is on loan to someone else. Maybe now is not the best time to restrict your calories if you are the sole provider of nourishment to your baby. And the fact that you aren't losing may be further evidence that your body is needing more calories to produce.. so it is holding on to every last ounce on you! Good luck.
