[fast5] Re: New Year week is Cabbage Sale week

When I mentioned the supposed-Luck gained by eating Cabbage on New year's Day to a Flying Group...I got this reply.

Great suggestion, Barnaby! Cabbage sauteed until in olive oil until it starts to caramelize is one of my favorite vegetables and goes well in or alongside just about anything.

[fast5] New Year week is Cabbage Sale week

For all looking to keep food bills lower for the time that you do eat, cabbage is an excellent vegetable to have around to add to your meals. Pieces can be a substitute for bread as crunchy low carb to spread stuff on and if the winter chill finds you eating some chili, use raw cabbage crunchy pieces, instead of crackers. Re: [fast5] Fast 5 and helping fertility

Infertility is often related to gluten intolerance, esp. celiac. Both are often related to thyroid issues too. The basic problem is though to be gluten-induced leaky gut (zonulin) which triggers autoimmune problems. See:

or Google "gluten infertility" ... it's a big issue right now. Something to experiment with, anyway.

Does Fast-5 help with that? I believe it does: having less food in the gut most of the time allows it to do housecleaning, and one of the reasons I do it is that it appears to have cleared up the lingering issues I had that did not resolve on a gluten-free diet. But also, for people not on a gluten-free diet, it lessens the load of gluten, since it's the main component in most foods in the US, esp. snack foods.

Fast-5 also makes it a LOT easier to experiment with foods that might be bothering you. It's just more obvious when you are only eating one meal a day, if a certain food doesn't make you feel great. Although since I've been doing it for a awhile, I've found that I digest foods a whole lot better than I used to.

Re: [fast5] fructose?

A number of the people in this group combine other diets with Fast5 ... it works for them. Other people don't, and just eat whatever they feel like (although "what they feel like" tends to change on this eating style) and still have great results. People tend to share what works for them, and Barnaby is one who believes fructose is bad. You should look at the success stories in the archives though. While some people might have problems with fructose, certainly not everyone does.

You are correct though: the Fast5 eating plan does NOT require that you avoid certain foods. Or that you do Atkins. You might want to experiment with different ideas at some point, but it sounds like you have your plate full, so to speak, already! And your health is coming back, which is huge.

Re: [fast5] fructose?

Ya know, I had been breaking fast with fruit and I was doing pretty good.. lately I haven't been, just cooking up a meal and I have to say.. not doing so well.  I am starving all day long. My blood sugar is low [not dangerously low, just enough to make me feel miserable]...  So I am going back to breaking with fruit...  Barnaby does what is good for him.  I have to do what is good for me.  I can't do Atkins, I feel horrible on it.   And you have to find what works for you.....

[fast5] Re: what a gift!

Mary, I was greatly encouraged by your note.  I battle several health problems, thyroid cancer patient for two more years,

arthritis in my foot, surgery didn't solve the problem and I will likely need a replacement joint, and a recent knee surgery just
last week, 2 days before Christmas.  I have been one most of my life to let my health iissues get me down in a way that I would feel sorry for myself
and eat for consolation, for a prize. (there are many more, but I wont bore you with that now!)
Amazingly, I still pinch myself, but have been the most successful with Fast  5 more than anything else in my life, and I
have a lot of life to go...I am a homeschooling mom of 7, with 5 kids still at home.  To feel truly my best, I know that I still
need to lose 20 more pounds in order to keep up with them.  I have lost approximately 20lbs now, but the biggest thing has been to realize just
how little food one needs to function.

Again, Mary, I am so excited to hear about your MS symptoms lessening, and just keep with it.  Slow and steady wins the race,
inch by inch is a cinch, yard by yard is very hard.
You will feel  better and better as more time goes on.

Over Christmas I got to see a friend who through another friend that
I shared Fast 5 with commenced it herself.  Sounds confusing, but suffice it to say, my success has caused others to start. How thrilling is that?
And she looked amazing!
She is a vivacious Puerto Rican woman, full of zest, dynamic public speaker and being on Fast 5 has pumped her up even higher, which is quite hard to
imagine!  She has lost some weight so far, a bit, but even better, feels in control of her life again.  She feels that she can do this.
The sense of denial has lessened to almost nil.  Thanks Bert, and to all who share openly on
this forum. It is a great treat and blessing to read each day what your trials, accomplishments, and daily goals are on here.

Re: [fast5] fructose?

New on the list and to the fast 5...I have a very healthily attitude about food so my first thought was (I live in FL so no google needed) how wonderful, to be able to walk out your back door and harvest what your body wants.

I am not doing this for weight loss, I have been the same weight since high school (except for a couple of sad years). This is not a "fad diet" ...if your body would like an orange eat an orange just remember balance it out with a healthy meal or snack prior to a sugar crash.

Kudos to the one month mark and look forward to updates:)

My 1/2 cent worth of opinion.

[fast5] Re: what a gift!

Hi Mary,

I just wanted to say congratulations on a great start and to encourage you to think of this as a lifestyle not a diet. Then hopefully you will be less likely to bounce back to the lifestyle that has kept you bound instead of free for so long. Isn't it lovely that, even though you now "eat to live" rather than "live to eat," when you do eat, the food is just so much more of a pleasure? And the lessening of your MS symptoms is a huge bonus! :)

All the best to you!

[fast5] shucks....

If I wasn't feeling so well, I would really wonder if I would ever lose with this...almost 5 weeks now, and probably about 5 lbs down...I didn't track it well so I am kind of stuck looking for a NUMBER on a scale.

Like I said, I feel pretty good. I am getting many things done...and I am recovering when I get tired ...used to be, my "recovery" when overtired took longer. Now, not so much.

I just come here to get encouraged again...
I have some beautiful satsumas from my Dad's yard to break my fast with today. that I look forward to.

People really do like bound books. I write technical manuals for

a living, and that is a big complaint: "I want it in print!"  Lulu will
print any PDF that an author posts there, and only takes a small
cut. But Amazon adds credibility (and the ability to find stuff fast)
so having the printed book there is a great idea.

[fast5] what a gift!

I just have to tell you thanks Bert. At 53, yeah, I have extra weight, give or take about 60 lbs. I have MS...been dealing with the ups and downs of this disease for 22 years.

I have been on every diet on the planet.
In the last couple of months, I decided that I needed to do something that listens to my body. As a for instance, I am not hungry most of the time. That doesn't mean there isn't food around, etc. I am an emotional eater. the "mouth" is a very stimulating "organ" and hence, feeding it serves an emotional function.

I always read, "You eat to live, you don't LIVE TO EAT". Isn't that profound. For 2010, I decided to "discover" what was going to work for ME. So in August while I was having an exacerbation of my MS, I took FAST 5 out again. For a few days, here and there, I tried it...didn't really take it seriously.

But, I made a DECISION...right before Thanksgiving, that I would follow it faithfully through the holidays. Now, yeah, you may think that would be asking for trouble. But, not really, remember, I said I am seldom "hungry"...don't have that feeling of hypoglycemia, etc. that everyone complains about. nope. not me.

So day after Thanksgiving, I started...managed to break my fast between 3 and 5pm. don't really remember, but, I do remember it wasn't at all a BIG deal. didn't "feel the pain of hunger" as it were.
Since the day after Thanksgiving I have MAINTAINED A 19 to 22 hour fast even through Christmas eve and Christmas DAY. yep, really. Now, have I lost a ton of weight? NO, NOT YET. but that will come. The big thing is, I FEEL FANTASTIC. I went with my daughter and granddaughters to see Santa...and "walked" the stores, without a cane. You cannot imagine how HUGE this is for me. Yeah, I have some MS symptoms, but for the most part,I feel so really HAPPY.
And I tend to suffer with the blues at holidays....didn't happen this year.

I have POWER with Fast 5. I am not overloading on JUNK. I am Picky about what I will break my fast with. And guess what, in 6 months, I will post PHOTOS! never dreamed I would consider that. I am 4 and 1/2 weeks, and I have dropped about 4 lbs solidly....but I do avoid the scale. Who wants to see that scale go slow. I just want to concentrate on HOW I FEEL, and HOW I am EMOTIONALLY HEALING TOO.

FOOD DOES NOT RULE MY LIFE. I EAT TO LIVE, I DON'T LIVE TO EAT. I don't like "food" that much. I love my family and my arts and hobbies MORE!

MARY
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It is such a good cause to help keep the information available to all.  I just ordered the book through the website so I can share the hard copy with inquiring friends and family.  Heck, I've saved ten times that on groceries already!

The book available at Amazon is the same as the downloadable book. Some people prefer a hardcopy version just out of preference or they buy it so that they can give it to a friend or family member instead of sending a link. There is a link on the Fast-5 website to the Amazon site.

For a short book, the price may seem high, but Amazon keeps more than half of the sales price and the rest goes to the non-profit to support the website.

So, those who buy the book on Amazon help to make it freely available as a download. There's also a link on the donations page that allows one to shop at Amazon and have a tiny bit of your purchase (4% or so -- every little bit helps) go to the non-profit at no extra cost to you.

[fast5] Starting Tomorrow!

I'm getting a head start on my new year goals! I'm starting tomorrow. I'm going to be flexible with my window, because I need too, because of my work. I'm excited to get this started. If anyone is starting tomorrow, I'd love a buddy. Is there a place for me to post my success?

I've emailed the book to you. If you've already read the summary page on the website, you know the basics, but the book may add a little here and there.

Soft cheeses have more carbohydrates than hard because of the lactose sugar in milk. Low-Fat/Non-Fat cheeses the most carb-filled of all.

So-called Comedians like Jay Leno relish in holding their heart and faking a heart attack when talking about "junk-food" such as a Bacon Cheeseburger. Truth is, the meats and cheese are the healthy part of the meal and the Bun is the bad thing. People really became fearful of eating at State Fairs a Bacon/Cheeseburger with a Donut as the "bun", not realizing once again that the Meats and Cheese were the Healthy component, and they should have been more concerned with the donut.

People have lived quite well on all meat diets, so I place higher merit to saturated fats and meat with it's good protein.

Nothing wrong with low carb, non-starchy vegetables as your choice, however.

Desserts are the item which shouldn't become a daily habit.

Re: [fast5] Re: Breaking through a plateau?

Well, not ALL of us are anti-vegetable. Statistically, peoples who eat a lot of vegies are in better health than people who don't, esp. for stuff like colon cancer. The polysaccarides in vegies produce butyrate in the gut, which is good stuff. And they are full of vitamins and antioxidants and such. Plus they taste good, esp. in stir fry. Yumm!
