[fast5] Re: Question about lack of thirst

Hi, I'm new to the group. I noticed the lack to thirst too, I used to be a big water drinker,on IF I have to remind myself to drink water.

I seriously fell off the IF wagon nearly a month ago when a cold spell hit while I was doing a raw paleo IF WOE. First I stared eating cooked foods and then I moved to carbs, I swear it was the weather. I just did my first raw ish IF day yesterday and today I am fasting just fine. I'm guessing I needed to adjust to the cold.

I have a mug of water first thing to take some medication, and then seldom feel the need for anything more until just before I eat, when I'll have a pint of very diluted fruit juice. Then another mug of water later on with bedtime medication. That's it. I've read all about not going by thirst and how you're supposed to drink water all day long to keep hydrated and what have you, but I can't stomach drinks if I'm not thirsty.

[fast5] Re: Question about lack of thirst

I always ate 3 meals a day + snacks.. and drank water... tea or whatever
and when I started ff 2 months ago drank instead of eating something..
and now if I get hunger pains I drink something and then I'm fine...
so I don't know about not drinking .. but if your not thirsty then I wouldn't
drink...

I don't get "hungry" any longer but I still have something to drink somewhere
around me guess it's a habit and I don't know what to believe about the amount
of fluid to take in or not... I do what feels good for me and what I like...

Re: [fast5] Question about lack of thirst

One of the reasons you need water is to process food. You have 30 feet
of gut, and when it is full of food, you need water to add with it
(the food gets watered down and made into a slurry). You need more
water when you eat packaged and processed food, because it is very
dry. Also, the food is often salty, and that causes you to retain more
water. And it makes your blood sugar go up, which (esp. if it goes up
too much) makes you more thirsty.

So, I can think of several reasons offhand why thirst *might* go down.
And some more traditional fasters find they actually do better if they
drink less when they are not eating, for some reason. Drinking water
causes you to lose electrolytes and B vitamins, so there is likely
some kind of "sweet spot" that is the ideal liquid need for each
person. Probably, as with food, I'd go with what works for you. If you
feel hydrated (plenty of saliva and tears, no dry lips) and healthy,
then forcing yourself to drink doesn't strike me as a good idea. You
have a very good chemistry set built into your body, and if it thinks
you need water, it will let you know by making you thirsty (at least,
it will if it's working: Fast 5 tends to make it work better). I
usually keep some fresh water next to me as I work: if I feel thirsty,
then I'll drink it unconsciously. If there is no water nearby, I tend
to drink nothing but coffee, esp. at work places where the coffee pot
is near cubeland but water isn't. Then I feel sick by the end of the
day.

I find my thirst level varies greatly depending on what I'm eating.
Sometimes I have zero interest in liquids: sometimes I drink a lot of
water and herb tea.

[fast5] Re: Question about lack of thirst

I too have noticed a decrease in thirst. I used to force myself to drink lots and lots of water but then I was always looking for a bathroom. LOL I seem to do fine with drinking less water. I don't think we need the proverbial 8 glasses per day.

[fast5] Question about lack of thirst

Hi,

I'm new to the group. I recently adopted this WOE partly out of convenience (don't really have time during the day to stop for meals) and partly as a weight control device - I am not trying to lose weight, just keep it stable. I found out about, and read, the Fast5 book about a week ago, after I'd been eating like this for a few days (was doing some research to make sure I wasn't damaging myself).

My eating window is pretty much one hour around 6-7pm, just enough to have dinner with my family and eat a bit of dessert. I am not troubled with hunger during the day until about 4-5pm, and even then it is easily tolerable. What concerns me though is my complete lack of thirst.

So, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a decrease in thirst, I've been trying to find out more but come up with nothing.

Thanks in advance, and happy Christmas to you all (if you celebrate it).

/Kirsten

[fast5] Re: Excited!

I'll wait a yr before I start telling people... then I can tell them my BSs are
down and so is my weight... and leave it at that...

These are friends that all.. except my brother.. have Diabetes and have
been told by their dr's to eat 4-6times a day... and think an A1c of 7
is doing good...

they don't understand why I eat so much saturated fat... I know they
won't understand why I eat only 5hrs in a day... and they really don't
want to hear why I believe it's good for me...

I've been doing this for years, and people either just accept it matter-of-factly or sometimes show real interest, and then an exchange of information ensues. Since I'm obviously doing well on it, it's hard for people to simply rubbish or dismiss.

Isn't that the truth... and a good way of getting out of explaining...
and you probably eat more than she does too...

Re: [fast5] (fasting) Re: News article on Fast-5

My 85-year-old Mom was horrified when she found out that I was
only eating once a day. Then I told her: "What are you getting
on about? YOU only eat once a day!". She stopped bugging
me after that.

The other option is to have the courage of your convictions and just tell them straightforwardly about your WOE. I've been doing this for years, and people either just accept it matter-of-factly or sometimes show real interest, and then an exchange of information ensues. Since I'm obviously doing well on it, it's hard for people to simply rubbish or dismiss.

Surely this type of reaction isn't unique to England? There's certainly nothing to make excuses about!

We had to make plans with friends for Breakfast and I'm dreading it
As I said before no one but dh and my sister know I'm doing this...
I guess I'll eat.. can't sit there with 8 people and not eat something..

but then we're also invited for dinner at some of the same friends
that are going to be at breakfast.. I tried to get out of it but she really
wanted us to join them for dinner :( I want to go , she is a good friend
so I do want to go.. I'll just stick to protein as much as I can...

I'm a retired Nurse and it Never crossed my mind... and that it would
even work.. Amazing to me.. that's one reason I wanted to hear what
others had to say about it... and joined the group...
I know what I would think (before I did it) if someone told me they
only ate once a day... although , now that I'm doing it, I wish
someone would have told me it's possible... and a Great way of
living...

Re: [fast5](Linda E) Fast-5 and calorie restriction

Let's put it this way:  Being on a 1400 cals/day regimen is hard, BUT not as hard as if I had to consume only 1400 calories in three meals and a snack, as most people in the medical community insist that I should do.  In sum, I eat one meal a day, from soup to dessert, and enjoy the hell out of it!

[fast5] Don't break the Chain

Thanks to the person who posted about the 'Dontbreakthechain.com' website.

I love this WOE and love the way I feel on it and all the energy I have etc. But I find that sometimes I fall back into old ways of eating and then get caught in that trap for days.

I checked out dontbreakthechain.com and found that the chance to color in my little square at the end of the day has been just the motivation I need on those days I have been tempted to break my fast early and for no good reason other than the food is there and available.

Whatever works is what I say. Now I am using that same motivator for other things that I want to do on a regular (even if not daily) basis. More power to those colorful squares.

[fast5] Re: 1200 members

Thank you for your answer...
I'm getting by with ff for right now... I like the freedom too.. a lot

I love to eat a lot , and always have and doing ff I really have cut down
on what I do eat .. it's also a good way of eating for the holidays...and
not overeating... more than I do..
I'm concerned about my BS and am hoping the ff helps with the insulin
resistance .. I don't even lose with low carb , this week I've done as low
as 10carbs a day for 4 day and have seen the scale go down.. now
I'd like to see if stay there when I increase the number of carbs to 20...
only time will tell...

[fast5] Fast-5 and calorie restriction

I've been on Fast-5 since September, adhering strictly to the time window and to a limit of 1400 calories per 24-hour day.  I am now beginning to see a difference in the mirror and in the size clothing I wear, not to mention in how I feel.  Less backache, easier to get up and walk around, etc.  Definitely a great diet plan, and one that I plan to stay on until I reach normal weight.

The medical profession hates this plan, but it works for me.   I say, you can't argue with success.

[fast5] better nutrition

The last paragraph of the article about Fast5 in the newspaper caught my
attention. To address the 'eat anything' problem, one can look at the work
done by the Calorie Restriction Society.

There has been a lot of research for several years on calorie restriction.
It extends the life of animals. The Calorie Restriction Society is
collaborating with scientists at Washington University to learn more about
CR effects in humans.

Paul McGlothin & Mereith Averill have written a book titled The CR Way,
published 2008. These two people eat their calories earlier in the day and
then stop eating in the early afternoon... so they are actually using a
form of Fast5. The subtitle of their book says "using the secrets of
calorie restriction for a longer, healthier life."

I keep their book handy and refer to it now and then. They list specific
foods to eat. The whole idea of calorie restriction for improving your
health is to have optimum nutrition. We do not want to just eat anything.

[fast5] Re: 1200 members

Hi Kirsteen. I appreciate your post.

Eating one big meal a day, from apx. 1-2 p.m. has always worked best for my body, long before I found out about Fast 5. Until I found Bert's website, I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

When I eat early in the day, I can sleep way better at night, and I don't go to bed or wake up with a big bloated stomach.

Emotionally, however, the later hour works best for me.

Eating after work is when I'm the most drawn toward food.

Since I'm just coming back to the program, I'll think I'll try and stick to the 5 hour window first, no matter the time, and work on eating earlier after that.

I like the idea that you can change the window. On days that I'm willing to eat early, I will; if not, I won't. Takes the pressure off having to do this perfectly. :)

[fast5] Re: 1200 members

Hi Helen,

I can understand your frustration. I hate it when I ask questions (make phone calls, etc.) and I don't get a respond. I find that to be quite rude (although to be honest with you, I'm guilty of doing that myself). Most of the time, it's nothing personal.

Have you written to the founder, Bert Herring, himself?

I'm just re-connecting with this group. Have been away for awhile.

I love the Fast 5 lifestyle, although it isn't always easy to do.

It frees up so much time in my brain and in my life when I only have to think about eating during a 5 hour period. For me, that usually translates to 1 meal a day. I'm a "quantity eater", so one big meal usually does it for me.

I never thought I could wait until 5:00 to start eating. My window usually starts at 1:00. 5:00 however, seems to work best since that's when I seem to "need" the food, emotionally, the most.

Although weight is a concern, my primary focus right now is just to get back into the habit of the 5 hour window.

Hope that helps.

I would try writing to individual members who post something in particular that interests you, and see if you get a response that way.

Sincerely!

wallie
