Re: [fast5] Re: vertigo?

Ginger on strawberries IS awesome. I also recall the original recipe called for a T of concentrated OJ too

Excellent ideas, Heather (as always). I like the ginger on strawberries... have to try that!

I remember reading that strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges... which made me feel pretty smug because I love strawberries and don't eat oranges (though I do like orange juice). But ginger on strawberries sounds pretty special.

Re: [fast5] Re: vertigo?

Another thing you can do with ginger root ... buy a knob of it at the grocery store (it's cheap). Slice it into thin rounds. Pour sushi vinegar over it.

I keep it in the fridge, but it's ok at room temp too. Chop and add to meals. Super good for digestion and motion sickness.

My daughter carries candied ginger around, which she gives to friends when they get carsick. Says it always works. Candied ginger is awesome when chopped and mixed with chopped strawberries too (adding some pine nuts or other nuts is a nice touch too).

I think I already wrote this, but hey. I don't know any tricks for the other ingredients. Vit B is a great supplement in general.

The average American diet doesn't seem to have enough of some B vitamins. Yeast is one of the best sources, but we don't drink much "cloudy" beer either. Unlike, say, in older days, where everyone (including kids) started the day with beer or cider. Anyway, for an ongoing source of yeast, the "fake parmesan" is awesome. Actually I think it tastes better than "real parmesan". In the blender:

1. 2 cups of raw cashews
2. 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
3. 1 T dried garlic
4. 1 T powdered turmeric (or to taste)
5. 1 t salt (or to taste)
6. If you like spicy, 1 t red pepper flakes or cayenne.

Blend it up into a powder. Sprinkle on food. You can add dried seaweed too (instead of salt) or fermented black beans. Dried mushrooms add amazing flavor too. Dried greens add green stuff (dried green onions or dried spinach). Be creative! Makes a great hostess gift too. If needed, add some of those "do not eat" silica packets you find with some foods. (I save them for that reason).

Anyway, it's a great way to "sneak" good stuff into your diet. Here is an article about it:

It's great on popcorn, baked potatoes, vegies. Makes the meal more filling and satisfying somehow. Turmeric makes it nice and "yellow" and also happens to be very good for your brain.

There's no complex and no link. Just buy these 4 ingredients separately and take them daily for your vertigo (and if you want to take them more than once a day, I see no reason why that could be harmful).

Once again:

Grapeseed extract
Ginger root
Gingko biloba
Vitamin B complex

That means, of course, 4 separate pills. But I take them all together and have never had a problem. It does take a few days (at least) for the symptoms to subside, but when they're gone, they're gone. And I keep bottles of all of them on hand in case the vertigo pops up again. So far this year, I've had no vertigo, but in previous years it's come once or twice a year, so I try to stay vigilant.

Good luck!

Re: [fast5] Why no recent discussions?

No to counting calories. That is one of the joys of this eating regime to me. I really can not go shopping for 'eye of newt' and other masses of foodstuffs which I the need to prepare. I love this way of living but had a more level weight drop when I first started this end of last year. I have no problem keeping my 19+ hours free of food. I miss coffee with a bit of milk for my one and only cup of the day but I am making a big fruit salad to have after my evening meal so tht is a huge plus. I have also moved on to enjoy a range of 'fruit' teas during the day - and I never have had sugar in anything I drink (wine excepted); my evening meal is well-balanced with fish, turkey and occasional beef + veggies and couscous or brown rice.   My main slip is to have that extra glass of wine AND I know I am not exercising enough.
I am on holiday in Vermont (Scotland is my home) presently so have abandoned the Fast5 for the time being. Plan A is to incorporate 3 weekly sessions at Curves & get back to Fast5-ing. Am sure I'll be back with a successful report. I love this! Just slightly bummed as I seem to have hit a plateau.
Cheers!

Here's my latest: lost 12lbs last year in run up to Xmas - maybe 2 months. Right after the holidays I had a long sojourn to US and stopped my program for many months due to much traveling. Have started this style of eating again about a month ago and have lost 10lbs very quickly. I seemed to be on a plateau even tho I find this way of eating easy and enjoyable so I'm guilty of no slip ups.
Worst thing? Not having milk in my ONE CUP of coffee in the morning.
Best thing? Feeling slimmer and generally healthier and I require less sleep with more energy.
I am off to Vermont for a wee holiday (from Scotland) so we'll see how I manoeuvre thru the wonderful breakfasts so many of the Inns have to offer.

[fast5] vertigo?

susan,

i have a chronic problem with vertigo since 1997 (runs in the family).  i've had it this time since august.  i tried googling those ingredients, including whole foods.  please, could you link to the complex you use?  i'd greatly appreciate it.

thanks

I never drink tea without lemon--have been doing it all my life--and as we get into cooler weather, even here in South Carolina, hot tea becomes more and more a daily staple. I also find when I'm outside my window that drinking hot tea seems to do for me than just having water or another liquid; it's almost (not quite) like actually eating something.

I have had issues with vertigo since 1996, and a friend gave me a great protocol to get rid of it. Ginger is helpful, but that's only part of it. I keep the following on hand all the time: grapeseed extract, gingko biloba, ginger root and vitamin B complex. When you have a vertigo issue, take ALL of them (I get them in capsule form from Whole Foods). It's not an instant fix, like taking aspirin for a headache, but over the course of a few days you'll notice the vertigo goes away. And none of that stuff can hurt you.

I'm glad Marty started posting here. I've really missed this group. It's so much easier to read stuff here rather than going to FB, which IS a huge time waster, and I've tried to get away from it. But I do love the ideas and encouragement here.

Maybe if enough of us keep posting, others will be drawn back here? I hope so. And Heather, could you please remind us again of the name of your blog? I loved reading it but don't have a bookmark (my mistake).

Thanks!

Re: [fast5] Re: Why no recent discussions?

Interesting about the vertigo. I probably had something like that at one point but it kinda went away so I don't think about it. At the time I was having a lot of ear problems though too. I used to have constant ear and sinus problems. These appear to have disappeared. I'm not sure what to blame for that!

I agree with no3rdseat too, about traffic. The Internet does seem to bring out the worst in some people, and that quashes discussion. It's actually been studied ... how to keep polite discussions in this kind of a venue. It reminds me of the Victorian days when the ladies would have evenings of discussions in a "salon" ... it was the hostesses job to kick out any people being overly rude.

And yes, the fact is, there isn't much to say once something WORKS. You ever see discussion groups for "building a better spoon"? I mean, over the past 500 years or so people have decided how a spoon should look, and now no one talks about it.

In fact, I think one reason there is so much discussion about "vegan" and "low carb" and "raw food" is that basically they *don't* work at some level, and that makes them hard to stick to. So people spend a lot of time online trying to get motivation and figure out how to make it work.

In terms of online sharing ... there is no "spoon" for that. No one knows "what works". It's pretty clear to me that none of the current venues work very well. Forums are pretty close, but they lack some of the "social connection" and "image" features that are needed. Wikis tend to be taken over by a few people. Facebook is chaotic. eMail groups lack the ability to summarize history. It would be a great project for some PhD, grant, or Kickstarter.

I'm still here.  But really I don't have much to say.  You don't eat for 19 hours, then you eat reasonable amounts of nutritious food for 5 hours.  Repeat.  :)  That's the beauty!

I do recall when this group lost it's "zeal".  There was a member who completely loved low carb and he would make, uhh, forceful comments to prove his point of view.  Well, finally several people had had enough, an argument ensued, and the list was quiet for several weeks.  It never recovered.

I still get notifications from Yahoo when people post here so I'm always available.  And I still think about most of the people that I met who helped me when I was first starting and wonder how they're doing.  I tried Facebook Fast-5 but it seemed at the time that everyone was making Fast-5 more complicated than it needed to be so I scurried off to my simpler life.

So I'm still doing it during the work week (five days a week) but usually not on weekends.  From this group I've learned that you don't need to eat three squares a day.  If you miss a meal or two, you'll just be a bit better off and no harm has been done.  No breakfast, No problem (should be a t-shirt).

My wife has decided to do 5:2 intermittent fasting and she has lost thirty pounds and looks FANTASTIC!  Her hormonal issues are gone and she has no aches or pains anymore when she runs.  I've thought about trying 5:2 but on the two fasting days I would miss my glass or two of wine too much.  :)

I wanted to thank Dr Herring for the work he's put in.  It really has changed my life for the better.

Re: [fast5] Re: Why no recent discussions?

Yeah, I tried facebook but it's a huge time-sink and yes, difficult to have a decent conversation. I think some of the more serious discussions have moved to forums though too ... it's easier to categorize by topic. I like the forum idea IF I also get a copy in my email box so I can see what has changed.

Lemon juice in water is a great appetite suppressant, and also it's good for your stomach. Esp. if it has lemon or lime PEEL in it. The peel contains limonene which helps prevent GERD and stomach ulcers. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of my eating had to do with a kind of semi-nausea I was living with. A lot of the stomach upset had to do with stomach irritation due to food sensitivities, drinking tea without lemon, stomach ulcers, and a hiatal hernia.

"Not eating" for a long period of time can make ulcers hurt more. So that became an issue with Fast-5. However, the lemon rind fixed a whole lot of it! Avoiding the foods that bother me fixed a lot too.

What I do is find the really good organic lemons and/or limes and buy a whole bag of them. Slice into fourths, then freeze them on a cookie sheet, and put them in a bag in the freezer. Take one out per day, and use it in my water or tea.

Ginger is super useful too. Get a root or two, slice then, put it in a jar. Cover with sushi vinegar, and you are good to go for a few months. Chop a slice into your food. Eat a slice if you have any kind of stomach upset or get  motion sickness (yes, it works!).

One thing about peppermint ... it's great to make your own tea, and we did that here this year. I have a recipe for something called "Tranquilitea" which is a mix of peppermint, sage, and rosemary. I happen to have all of those in the garden. So I wrapped them into bundles, then hung them with a paperclip on a string near the kitchen (lots of warm air). Crumbled them up when dry.

It's a super-great mix. But it also happens to be really great for stomach upset, like, when someone gets a roto-virus or food poisoning. Bentonite is good for that too.

However, peppermint also exacerbates reflux for some people.

I read that peppermint is a good appetite suppressant. when I want something to eat or drink after my window closes, I will make a cup of peppermint tea. the article I read said that just smelling peppermint can suppress your appetite and I bought a chocolate peppermint plant and actually make a point to smell it when I start thinking about food! I have even put some of the leaves in water with lemon and lime slices for a refreshing drink since I have given up soda.

of course this won't work if you don't like peppermint or tea but I hope it helps.

Marty, thanks for your story.

Thanks also for asking where the group was--I didn't know either. I did ask to join the group, but my membership is apparently still pending. Alas.

I loved the stories and advice people shared here, and got some excellent advice for my own situation. I hope that once I'm on the FB group, there'll be a lot of the same. It was great.

Congratulations on all the weight you lost. I never was able to lose all the weight I wanted to on Fast 5, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the fact that a) I didn't eat a high-quality diet when I was doing it, and b) one cheat would bring down the whole house of cards for me, and I found it incredibly hard to get back on the wagon. Once I did, of course, I felt marvelous and was almost never hungry--my appetite decreased enormously, even within my window, and I was always perfectly satisfied with the amount of food I ate. But if I ever ate outside my window, after being accustomed to eat only during my window, it blew the whole thing.

That was tough. So I was never on it long enough to drop all those pounds, though I found that going from eating traditionally to Fast-5, I could be sure of losing about 20 pounds right away. That was a huge boost.

I too want to go back to it--I think it's the best control for my appetite and a great discipline. That's one of my goals for this fall. (I remember being very much on Fast-5 a few years ago during the holidays, ate anything I wanted during my window--but never too much--lost weight during that very tricky time of year and never once felt deprived. It was AMAZING!)

Looking forward to the FB group and to the inspiration I got from other members here. It really helped keep me on my own path.

Susan

Re: [fast5] Why no recent discussions?

I've been off of Facebook for months.  It was too much of a distraction and the newsfeed was too much out of my control to suit me.  For things like this that I wanted to see, Facebook filtered out too much but gave me more of different things that I cared much less about, much of it negative.  I miss those things and contacts I liked about it, but it was dragging me down.  Overall, I'm better off without it.

This venue was focused and a single message a day gave me everything in one, easy to scan, digest.  But if all the contributors have abandoned it, it's pretty much just an archive of great info.

My story is that I lost ~50 lbs with Fast-5 years ago.  After gaining about 8-10 back, I was stable at 195 for a couple of years or more.  Then I started cheating more and more and gained back another ~20. So for the last year and a half or so,  I've hovered around 218-220 lbs.  While it's still better than the 245 I started at, I wish I was around 200.  The weight I feel best at is 195-200.

I don't know why, but I keep eating (or having a drink) well past the end of my window.  So I know my problem, I just need to put myself back into the mindset I was in when I started Fast-5.  I was faithful to it for about 3 years and it was faithful to me.

So that's my Fast-5 history.

Yes, Marty, most of the conversation is taking place in the private Facebook group called "Fast-5 Diet and Lifestyle." It has over 3000 members. I think people just find it a more comfortable and convenient venue. The links are on the Fast-5 page at Fast-5.org.
