[fast5] Bingeing Challenge

My challenge with it for now is the same as before...although I'm not
hungry because I'm too consumed in my day, when I finally do sit down
to eat, I eat a huge amount. I actually thought about just eating a
dinner out at a place like Herbivore, which has a really reasonably
sized small salad. Large enough for a meal, but without the huge slab
of cheese I would inevitably add to mine!

I figured if I did that for a couple of weeks or so, it might be
expensive, but would get me in the habit of eating a regular portion
for dinner, instead of a 2,000 calorie-load meal.

thoughts? Or should I just accept the minor bingeing for what is and
know that it will equalize over time?

Re: [fast5] Just started!

I'd second this. Your body has a very fine-tuned ability to know when
it is "starving" and it isn't based on numbers. If your body is
hauling around 50 lbs of fat, for example, it might make a lot of
sense that your appestat says "hey, there is WAY TOO MUCH FAT here,
let's not eat so much". Under those circumstances, it's highly
unlikely that some "starvation mode" circuit is going to kick in.

However, one thing that can throw off the appestat is when you are
eating low-nutrient food. There are some nutrients that a human body
somehow "looks for", and if they are absent, it will prompt hunger to
get you to find those nutrients. I think protein is known to be one of
those: and it needs to be whole protein. Likely fish oil is another,
and the minerals (cal/mag/zinc). Certain fibers have a great effect on
the appestat too.

So, if you are making good food choices ... good vegies, fish, fruit
... you might find that you really don't care to eat so many
"calories" ... your body isn't looking for calories, because it knows
you have plenty stored. In which case 500 calories, for you, for that
day, might be just fine.

The way to tell is by how you feel *the next day*. If you are starving
way before your window, then what you are doing isn't working as well
as you'd like, and it's time to experiment. You'll find some meals
work really well to keep you full the next day. Some don't work so
well. On this group, I'd say that more people have issues with
high-starch/high-sugar meals, while high protein meals tend to "stick"
better. I've found good results with fibers (right now I'm into
konjac) too.

Food allergies are another issue: if you eat a food you are allergic
to, (gluten/casein are the poster children) then it is very likely
you'll feel hyper-hungry the next day. Dunno why this is, but a number
of people have reported it.

[fast5] starting with alot to accomplish

I'm so happy I came across the fast-5 information on the internet. Today was my first day of the adjustment phase. This sounds really easy and stress free. No deprivation when you get to eat. I'm a big girl but I still love fruits and vegetables, just not a fan of whole grains yet. I'm trying to teach myself to like them. I've lost weight before when I was a teenager, I grew up as a fat kid and when I realized how fat I was I starved myself to get down to a healthy weight losing 130 pounds. I gained it back in a few years when I had an abusive fiance. Lost half of it again after getting out of the situation without trying to diet. Then I gained it back and then some going through some hard to deal with living conditions while working at a fast food resturant. They gave me all the free food I could ever want because they were trying to bribe me into management. Now I'm out of that difficult situation and back where I should be but the weight is extra stubborn this time. I feel like I have that metabolic syndrome X or something. It makes sense in the book where it describes your body running on glucose or ketones, maybe mine is on a glucose kick 24/7. I've tried so many diets this time and I haven't had much success, its so hard to stick to those eat mini meals and snacks several times a day kind of diet. Those just make me extra hungry because I never get to fill up and they make for some gross breath because you eat so often, really who is going to brush thier teeth 6 times a day? Its very inconvenient to have to eat that often. I don't want to stop work several times to eat a snack. I read the fast-5 online book and it really makes sense. Maybe thats why I did lose weight all those other times without realizing that it was because I didn't always eat, giving my body a chance to use up fat stores. I'm really excited about starting this, I'm more likely to cook something healthful because its only once a day and I'll look forward to eating. The way I feel doesn't match the way I look. I don't recognize what I see in the mirror or photographs. My goal is to get back into the wardrobe I still have out in the shed from the first time I lost weight. I would love to be 165-175 pounds, even just under 200 would make me happy. I'm sure I'll have the weight of extra skin by time I get there. Right now I'm 355 pounds and only 5 feet 8 inches tall. I can still run, climb, swim, ski, and work as hard as other people (lol and i did actually ski at 295 pounds all day without falling down, amazing! lol! I don't want to stay like this because it'll get worse as I get older, I'm only 23 now so I have youth helping me be more active. I feel like I'm wasting time being big, I could be dating, married, etc but i look so unapproachable like I don't care and don't take care of myself, like I 'let myself go' being so big. So I don't blame any guy for not wanting to go out with me LOL. I'm really fun to be with but I need to get back to looking approachable before anyone would ever know. Even if it took me 5 years to lose the weight I would be thrilled, life doesn't stop because of problems, if it did what fun would that be. I'm planning to have fun with this weight loss, gonna take before and after pics and monthly weigh ins. I liked that picture in the book with the guy complaining about his knees hurting and he has a fridge strapped to his back. I feel like i have two fridges strapped to my back, my feet feel like I'm walking on hot coals at the end of a long work day (I have to stand/walk on concrete all day). I have 200 pounds to lose according to the chart in the book but will be happy with 180 pounds lost. I refuse to give up and get gastric bypass surgery. I've only failed when I give up trying, I've had to fight weight my whole life and will not give up, and might as well have fun while i'm at it. wish me luck! I'll update from time to time.

[fast5] Re: Just started!

Remember the whole idea of this is to train your body to use its 'fat
stores' for fuel. You certainly should not be trying to cram in enough food/calories in your window to act as fuel to get you through the 19 hours "just in case".

Another benefit of this WOE is you get to avoid that bloated feeling that often comes from eating, eating and eating some more because that is what we have always been told to do. I have found that I am so much more in tune with my body's actual needs with this plan.

Do not eat "just because".
Enjoy the empty feeling that occurs at the end of the 19 hrs.

Also 500 calories is just a number that another poster thought they were consuming. It is definitely NOT what you are trying to get to.

Slow down and listen to your body and feel what it is telling you. It DOES NOT like to feel bloated and it DOES like to have a rest from all the digestive processing that 6 meals a day requires. Relax and don't overthink it.

binge eat the entire time. so for example, today during a 3 hour time slot,
i ate about 1600 calories, and now i feel extremely bloated and like my
stomach is going to explode.

i am worried that i won't be getting enough calories to sustain my body,
which is why i end up over eating.

i do not understand how 500 calories (as some posts have mentioned) will be

RE: [fast5] Gum question?

Cindy - the way I understand it is that you can have up to 10 calories
during your eating window without any adverse affects.

Yes! As I have read in the book; you may get bad breath! My husband
definally noticed (poor guy). The book say's to have sugar free gum but,
I can not help but notice that a lot of sugar free gum still has
calories. Does this matter? I would hate to be chomping on gum that may
be setting me back.

Today is the last day of September. I have been living my new eating
lifestyle since January of this year (9 months). I stepped on the scale

[fast5] Re: quick question

I have been doing this for 13 days and I have lost 5.6 pounds. I am very faithful to my 5 hour window and during the week I will eat 900-1100 calories a night. Keeping track of what goes in you is very important when on any diet. If your BMR is 1700 and you are consuming 2000 calories you are not going to get anywhere. I generally eat what I am feeling for and if it pizza I get pizza but I don't eat half the pizza no matter how hungry I was. On my weekends so far I have not been eating the most healthy of food but I make sure to not over eat. I do exercise at least 3 times a week for about an hour. Keep in mind you do not have to exercise for an hour straight if that may be boring for you but, do try to do more. Walk on your break at work, park farther when you go to the store. When you are watching TV. get on the floor and do some sit ups, squats..etc.

I keep track of my calories at fatsecret.com it really helps me. You can keep track of your weight, calories and exercise!

Keep trying and good luck

[fast5] Re: Daily Calorie Requirements

Jody,

I have been doing this diet for 13 days and I have lost 5.6 pounds. I have been faithful to doing the fast everyday because I love losing weight more than I love food! Anyways I eat about 900-1100 calories during my window. On my weekends so far, I have been eating 1300-1500, I can't help it, family get togethers = LOts of food! I eat until I am full and if at the end of the window if get a little hungry I make my self a little snack or have some popcorn. So you can still EAT and lose the weight if this is what you are worried about. I would not recomend only eating 500 calories, the days will just get harder and harder to fast.

[fast5] Just started!

hi everyone,
i happened upon this site when i read about fast five. i am currently about a week and a half into my fast five, ate outside of my 5 hour window once, but have always followed up with the required 19 hour fast. i know that i wont settle down into the diet until three weeks, but at first i started ok, not binge eating, but for the past couple of days, what i have done is just shorten my window, but binge eat the entire time. so for example, today during a 3 hour time slot, i ate about 1600 calories, and now i feel extremely bloated and like my stomach is going to explode. i have been doing this for the past couple of days and don't know how to stop it! i am worried that i won't be getting enough calories to sustain my body, which is why i end up over eating. i do not understand how 500 calories (as some posts have mentioned) will be enough to sustain my body for 19 hours following. fast five has been very successful in reducing my hunger, as i am not even hungry when my window opens up, but i feed myself because i am afraid that i will become weak and have no energy for the rest of the day which i cannot allow as i'm an active student and do not want my school work to suffer because of this. i have a fairly high metabolism, so should i try shooting for a calorie limit? or will this binge eating feel go away in a few days? i don't think i have gained any weight over the past week and a half, but i cannot and do not want to gain anymore weight at all. i am right around my desired weight area and just want to shed a few more pounds. also, how would i move to a maintenance mode after i shed the desired weight?

That is exactly my experience! Focus on the best highly nutritional foods, not the calories.

I treat myself at the end of my window by having a small quarter-sized piece of dark chocolate.

Jody, I have the same problem about half the time, where I let myself eat crap toward the end of my window and justify it by saying, "Well, I still need more calories today!"

Per my understanding of digestive physiology, there's a big difference between dieting calorie reduction (mild to moderate) and starvation calorie reduction (extreme). Consuming that few calories, i.e. only 500 per day, will send your body into what's known as "diet shock," which is a metabolic state in which the body sort of goes into emergency protection mode because it thinks you're starving to death. Your body starts redirecting energy and nutrient supplies to only the most vital organs and processes and away from more peripheral support systems (like your immune system), so you'll feel fatigued and exhausted, become sick and injured more easily, and generally feel like crap.

Also, I'm skeptical that you can get enough and a good balance of nutrients in only 500 calories per day, such as a complete balance of amino acids (a big concern for me personally, as I'm vegetarian). My advice to you would be to focus on nutrient-rich foods, and make sure you're eating enough of all the necessary vitamins, proteins, whole grains, enzymes, etc. I think you'll find that if you make sure to get enough nutrients, you'll get plenty of calories, and you won't be tempted to supplement them with junk food. When I really focus on the nutritional content of my diet, my thought usually is, Holy cow, how am I supposed to eat all this food? The eating window will limit your caloric intake naturally, so I find that focusing on eating enough nutritionally-rich foods helps make a good balance.

[fast5] quick question

Hey fellow 5-ers I have a quick question...what do you typically eat during the 5 hour window? I think I am eating too much but I am not sure how I will be able to tell. So I just want to know what you eat and how much of it?

This is the beginning of my third week and I feel as though I have lost nothing =/ I also havent been working out though...I just need some re-enouragement I guess!! Thanks!

Re: [fast5] Daily Calorie Requirements

Maybe in my body, it can't convert it fast enough, or something, for what
I do.

Last I had it checked, my base metabolic rate was 1600 calories.
Our household is on the go from 6:30 am til 9:00 pm, with late night tow
truck calls, livestock chores, and outside activities, not to add in
stress components. So I just know I have days when I just can't go
anymore, unless I eat outside the fast. Not sure why, I just know if I
sit down in a chair at 3:00 in the afternoon, and don't have the gumption
to get up and going, I have 5 hours of the day wasting, and that doesn't
work here.

The IF (7 hr window) worked easily for about 2 months. Then I had to
adjust eating because of lack of energy. Not saying anyone else might
run into this----I have.

Just my personal opinion, but on Fast5, i really believe you can let your body dictate the calories you eat. What i mean is, if you only have 500 calories and you don't want any more, don't force yourself to eat it.  I find some days, that's probably about all I have, though it's a guestimate as I never measure or track calories. Other days, I'll have a lot more.

I wouldn't recommend deliberately trying to eat only 500 calories but if that's all you want on any one day, then go with it.

Some days I have a green smoothie and really don't want anything else. Other days I get hungry about 3 hours after it and want another meal. I find on this way of eating, for the first time in my life, I can actually listen to what my body wants not what I think it should have :-)

Cheers
Kirsteen

Re: [fast5] Daily Calorie Requirements

You asked about 500 calories... I don't think you can get optimal nutrition from only 500 calories. The Biggest Loser program found that when contestants ate too little, they did not lose weight. I don't know the reason why.

How many calories you need each day may depend on how old you are and how active you are. As we get older, we need fwer calories. I am 66 and I get around 1400 calories in my window and I am losing weight with that amount. I work on getting 5 - 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day plus protein and fats.

Re: [fast5] Introduction

What you describe is pretty common ... your body adjusts and sometimes
"shrinks" without actually weighing less. There could be a lot of
reasons for this, and some are discussed in the book. The classic one
is: fat really doesn't weigh all that much. Get a big blob of beef
fat, and you see how light it really is. On most diets, the "weight"
you lose is largely water, and some muscle. Fast5 doesn't encourage
muscle loss, and in fact you might get some muscle GAIN, esp. if you
are working out some.

I see this in my daughter, who more or less eats Fast-5 (though like
your earlier self, she doesn't do it purposefully). She would be "fat"
on the height/weight charts, but in fact she is very athletic and
doesn't carry a lot of fat. She IS extremely "dense" though, and has
dropped a few clothes sizes since she started really working out. My
take is that the weight charts are created for the average person, who
in this time era isn't very healthy.

If you stop shrinking and want to shrink more though, you should take
a look at what you are eating and maybe make different choices, or eat
your food in a different order.

It also can be the case that the weight your body decides to be isn't
the weight you feel you ought to be. While Fast-5 has been a lifesaver
for my overall health, I never have gotten to my "ideal" weight. I
might choose to work on that someday ... or not. Right now I'm happy
that my body works better than it used to!

[fast5] Introduction

Hi!

I have been following the Fast-5 way of life for only 3 weeks now (after several false starts). Back in 2002 I discovered this way of eating by accident (hectic studenty lifestyle etc) and as a result achieved my ideal weight with little effort and had more energy than I had ever had in my life. I also reveled in a sense of liberation from the constant barrage of food-centric thoughts that 3+ meals a day invite. So much more time to focus on other things!

Unfortunately I gave up this way of life (I suppose additional meals and snacks crept in until they had once again taken over) and here I am, a good 30 pounds above my ideal weight and rather desperate to change this!

I wonder if I could ask your advice (and I suppose encouragement?)
I have just weighed myself and (sigh) I do not appear to have lost an ounce - after three weeks of quite strict Fast-5ving. Discouraging as that is, I have noticed that clothes are looser on me. It is as though my body is very gradually 'changing shape'(though I am not exercising at the moment!). Has anyone else noticed this happening to them?

In any case I am NOT going to give up!

Anyway, thought I would introduce myself and wish all fellow Fast-5ers the best of luck in this endeavor!

I changed my window from 5 to 10pm. I'm now on an afternoon window.. 12h30pm to 5h30pm... because I read that ayurvedic medicine preach we have 3 cycles... intake cycle form 12pm to 8pm, assiminlation cycle from 8pm to 4am, and eimination cycle from 4ap to 12pm. So, because elimination cycle takes place in the morning I decided to try this afternoon window... I've been doing this for 3 days and a feel much better than at the evening window I was in for the last 2 weeks...
but I'm new on fast-5.. only in my 3rd week... But I feel much better now not having dinner...

best regards

[fast5] Re: World's oldest man practices Fast-5!

As I metioned in an e-mail earlier this week, this is how I have been eating for a while now and I find it works really well for me, but as was mentioned in some other peoples emails not everyone is a morning eater. For me I found this way helped me from bingeing in the evenings after being hungry all day. Like I also said I am more relaxed with my eating on the weekends which has really helped me too. Like he points out in the article eating less is the real key, so however you can do that so it works for you is great.

Re: [fast5] World's oldest man practices Fast-5!

Yes, I follow this window of food in the morning. I have my regular breakfast (Nancy's cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, freshly ground flaxseeds), a mid-morning fruit dish of blueberries, 1/2 banana, strawberries, and kiwi, with walnuts and 3 Brazil nuts, and a lunch of lots of veggies and a protein (often a large salad with a variety of raw veggies plus avocado and either chicken or salmon.) Two days a week I vary the menu by having soup or chili over a baked potato or eggs or natural peanut butter.

RE: [fast5] World's oldest man practices Fast-5!

That's the way I do it :)

I don't think there is a universal "perfect time" for everyone.  I think some people are wired to be more active in the evenings/nights, and some in the mornings/days.  I wake up hungry, so I eat in the morning.  I do feel lightly hungry at night but it's not unbearable and I'm normally too busy in the evening anyway so any dinner would be a hurried affair.

Re: [fast5] World's oldest man practices Fast-5!

Actually the "eat like a king in the morning" philosophy has been
around for awhile, and a lot of people swear by it. I think there are
cultural preferences: in some places they eat their big meal in the
middle of the day and then take a nap, and in others they eat their
big meal in the evening. I think we are the first people in history to
have *three* big meals a day, and that probably came about with the
advent of servants in middle-class households. Snacks got invented
pretty much by the snack food companies.

[fast5] World's oldest man practices Fast-5!

Check out this article from USA Today:

"Walter Breuning, who turned 113 on Monday, eats just two meals a day and has done so for the past 35 years. "I think you should push back from the table when you're still hungry," Breuning said...At 5 foot 8...and 125 pounds, Breuning limits himself to a big breakfast and lunch every day and no supper...."You get in the habit of not eating at night, and you realize how good you feel. Seems like Breuning practices Fast-5 with a morning eat window instead of the normal afternoon or evening one. Anyone else follow this eating window of just breakfast and lunch? Breuning has not had dinner for 35 years!! But in doing so, he is probably still fasting at least 15 hours a day.

[fast5] 3rd week.

Hi guys,

yesterday was my 15th day on f5. Firsst day on week 3. I decide to move my window. I've been reading about ayurvedic medicine and they say our bodies have 3 cycles: from 12pm to 8pm the intake cycle, from 8pm to 4am the assimilation cycle and from 4am to 12pm the elimination cycle. So based on that knowledge I decide to place my window in the intake cycle and made it from 12h30pm to 5h30pm yesterday and today. It was sooo amazing. I always thought I was a night owl person but I discovered that actually I'm a cat nap person... I was very confortable to have my window in the afternoon... I'll keep it this way for this third week and what it feels like.

good luck to everyone.

Regina

RE: [fast5] Hi, I'm new!

Welcome!

I just jumped in; wasn't too bad.

Some people really struggle.

It's not 'bad' to ease in to it.

Do what feels right to you

My question is, has anyone else just jumped in with this and not taken much
time to ease into it?

RE: [fast5] Im a newbie!!

I have done just fine mixing up my fasting days.

Currently I fast5 on my non-lifting days and eat 'regular' on my 4 lifting
days.

Welcome!

Hey everyone,

I am new to the F5, I started last week and so far ive been strong on it. I
have not weighed myself yet, I am going to wait a week or two longer because
i dont want to get discouraged. I do want to know if anyone skips days and
does this mess it up? I am going out of town over the weekend and I am
struggling with if I will stay strong on it or not. I guess I dont want my
friends to look at me like Im crazy, I am sure you guys have gotten the
dirty looks when you tell people you only eat 5 hours a day!! I am looking
forward to sharing my progress, i have about 10-20 pounds to lose!
