[fast5] Re: The 4 Hour Body

That is exactly the way I felt and it was one of the reasons it took me so long to give it a shot and I must say honestly I don't think beans really can count as "carbs" anymore. They just don't have the same effect. I have been eating a wide variety of stuff I never would have normally eaten and I must say I'm surprised at how FULL I feel and how I honestly am not looking forward to a cheat day for the first time in my dieting life.

I don't think beans are beans. I think they are nuts without the fat. They're like tomatoes... they are fruit but they eat like a vegetable. It's weird I know but they really are your saviour. The funny thing about all this is when I was in my poor college days I ate tons of beans because they were filling and cheap and now I've come full circle and I had it in my hands the whole time :(

Since I only eat once or twice it makes "boredom" a non- issue. I DON'T THINK I COULD STAY ON THIS DIET IF I HAD TO EAT 5-6 TIMES A DAY. I will say that. I could easily get bored. I could see it fitting into a warrior diet style. Not much else.

I've been reluctant to recommend this book to anyone because it has a couple R rated chapters about sex :) But I wouldn't be a very good guy if I didn't tell you this book is AWESOME and perfectly compliments F5.

The author, Tim Ferriss, is one of those "eat right when you get up, yadda yadda yadda" guys but that's the only thing he's said that I don't agree with.

To measure Real Fat loss, throw away the scales and measure with a tape measure belly fat around your navel.. Your pants will get looser in the waist when you are losing Fat.

Eating fatty meat to fill with very little Carbs is excellent way to lose fat. Fasting is a very good way to maintain those losses.lyy

Likely much of that first 23 pounds in September was water weight, which is why you stagnated in December. You weren't eating a very extreme low carb and started to see improvement once fasting. Record your waist size to get the real story on FAT loss.

Re: [fast5] Water weight loss...

A lot of it likely IS water. Someone explained it well a few weeks ago,

here. The fat cells, when they lose fat, will sometimes keep themselves
plump with water, so they won't shrink. Then, I guess maybe when they
"decide" that the fat loss is going to be more permanent, they just
release the water. Which is one reason for plateaus followed by large
amounts of weight loss in a short order.

Anyway, fat doesn't weigh much, it's like styrofoam. But water is heavy.
When you  lose pounds, it's mostly water. Either way, it's probably a good
thing.

I have read that mineral status can influence water retention: I think it
was zinc or magnesium, that, if you get enough of it, your body is more
likely to release excess water. So if you are getting more minerals in
your diet this month, it might have something to do with it?

[fast5] Too much food in the freezer

Well, I have had to adjust my food shopping habits, I am eating much less food now. I am just astonished how much less food I eat.

I am stopping buying food for a while, my freezer was overflowing with leftovers. I didn't even know what was in there, I had to go through it and throw out some of it that was too old, or stuff I don't normally eat, bread that guests brought over for dinner parties. I wished that I could ship it to the resistence in Libya!

I am going to try to eat up the stuff in the freezer before I buy anything more....

I get hungry during the afternoon, looking at the clock when it will be time to eat. But then my stomach has shrunk so much, I can hardly eat the whole plateful!

which is gluten intolerance.

However, human beings, omnivores, and even carnivores always have
had a lot of fiber in their diets. It's really difficult to have a healthy
batch of microbiota without it. People on low-polysaccharide diets
have fewer of the good bacteria and more of the bad ... it might be
possible to get by on a low-fiber diet with lots of dairy (dairy is
designed to be an all-purpose food for mammals) but not everyone
can digest that either.

A lot of people have problems digesting carbs in general ...
probably due to lack of certain enyzmes. But other people
have problems digesting fats. If fat is probably digested, it
shouldn't end up "lubricating" anything ... it should be absorbed,
but probably a lot of it isn't digested right. And then some people
have problems digesting protein ... improperly digested meat
can cause sulfuric acid to be produced, which is really irritating.

Anyway, the Fiber Menace guy has a rather one-size-fits-all

on his own experiences and what works for him. If you want to
find people who on the whole live a long and healthy life, you
can look at places like Okinawa, where their main foods are
loaded with both carbs AND soluble fiber. They eat konjac (konnyaku) too.

My diet lately has been more and more "Japanese" and I
have to say my gut loves it. So do my joints, my blood pressure,
and my blood sugar. It's not a low-fat
diet, nor low protein, but it's loaded with vegies. Also easy meals
to prepare and very tasty!

I gave you advice. Eat plenty of fatty meat and quit thinking of Carbs as food.

Fatty meat is enjoyable to eat so eat plenty to fill you with your meal then fast 20 plus hours before the next day. The person who told you fiber proved their lack of value and so did your say of eating that made you fat.

You didn't say what you ate?

Eat as little Carbohydrate as possible, eat plenty of fatty meat and animal fat and avoid grains or starches. Fatty Meat will make it easy to maintain long 20 plus
fasting hours by eating your day's food in an hour meal.

No carbs more beneficial than any exercise and measure your waist instead of weighing on scales.

Main reason I was asking waist size was the timeline to whether that in those weeks you were disappointed in scales loss, you might have had good success with belly fat loss that week.

[fast5] Re: So Close To Goal!!

Unfortunately, I haven't kept track of waist size. I've gone from a ladies size 14 to a size 4. Here's some information I found on the waist sizes for those size clothes:

Size 4 (small): Waist = 26 inches and hips = 36.5 inches ... Size 14 (large): Waist = 31 to 32 inches and hips = 42.5 inches ...

If the above numbers are correct, then I have lost approximately 5 inches off my waist. If you check out my website and click on the link for photos, you can see a huge difference.

Thanks for asking.

[fast5] Re: The Dice Diet

BTW, I wrote this about a year ago as a sarcastic response to somebody after drinking 5 cups of coffee and I was trying to make fun of something they said but I never sent it and a month ago I found the email and I've been doing this and it's actually kinda fun so please don't take it seriously.

Feel free to copy it, plagiarize it, sell it, make a million, I dont' care. I forget where I heard the idea of using dice but I know I didn't make it up.

If you have any ideas on changing what the #'s mean, I'm all ears.

If there's one thing I hate it's boredom. I think I'd pretty much do anything to avoid it.

The Dice Diet is a way to avoid boredom in dieting.

The concept is simple. Take 6 diets and assign each of them to a number on a 6 sided die. I said die. Moving on...

This is my version based on Intermittent Fasting.

1. Eat Stop Eat style fast day (plus optional bonus round)
2. Low carb day
3. Lean Gains day
4. Warrior Diet day
5. Fast-5 day
6. 6 small meals

To make a long story short roll the die and do what it says and shut up about it and don't think too much about it. It's fun. Try it. You'll like it. I can hardly contain myself just talking about it.

To make a short story long here is a little bit of elaboration on what the numbers really mean...

1. ESE is a great diet. Fun for the whole family. But boring. On non diet days I wonder what I'm supposed to do other than twiddle my thumbs and think about potato chips. I really love the fast days. They're awesome. Who doesn't love them. By doing ESE I figured out that the fast days are pretty much a 1 meal day and if you eat too much it doesn't help any but isn't the end of the world. If you roll a 1 you might as well just expect to DIET in the traditional sense of the word. This is a diet day. Diet and suffer. Sacrifice. Eat one meal as close as humanly possible to bed time so you aren't tempted to eat again, eat healthy food, and just shut up about. It's a diet day.

*Bonus Round* If you like the idea of "cheat days" always put them after day number 1. Why? Because in order for a cheat day to not make you fat you have to deplete all your carbs. After a day like number 1 they will most certainly be depleted. But aren't you negating the fat burning effects of day 1 with a cheat day? 2. Low Carb. The best part about the Low carb diet is always the first day of being on it and with the Dice Diet you get to experience the pure THRILL of low carbing with none of the boring "I would like to die" drudgery of being on this type of hell diet for months on end.
If you roll a two, rejoice! Today is national high fat day. No fruit. No bread. Just high fat, high protein whatever. You know what to do.

3. Lean Gains is amazing and you can't argue with the author's appearance. He is the man and Lean Gains is THE diet. Read the website, do it and shut up.

4. The Warrior Diet is another amazing diet but like anything else, it's only flaw is IF YOU HAVE TO EAT THIS WAY EVERYDAY YOU WILL EVENTUALLY WANT TO CHOKE YOURSELF JUST FOR THE VARIETY. The Warrior Diet is simply probably one of the healthiest diet's I've ever come across in every way possible. If you roll a 4, just do it by the book. Being a rare occurence it will probably not get old.

5. Fast-5. If you roll a 5 just do Fast-5.

6. 6 meals a day. Does the 6 meals a day diet belong in a diet plan focused on intermittent fasting? Great to hear how the numbers on the scales are going down for you.

I'm curious if you have records, as you do the scales, on your reduction of waist size?

[fast5] Re: Goal Weight Questions

Thanks for all the advice. I have also been checking body fat percentage and measuring my waist, but I was focusing more on the scales. I like the reminders about where to focus most.

Right now, I'm thinking that I would like to lose 20 more lbs in the next 6 months, but I was wondering if it is better to simply continue with my current eating window (3-5 hours) until I reach the point that the fat burned each day equals the calories I take in, and I stop losing weight. The Wii Fit says that I should aim for a BMI of 22, but that would put me at 145 lbs, and I can't even remember the last time I weighed that amount. I can remember weighing 155 or 160 and being satisfied with my weight and appearance, so I was wondering if planning to cut away lbs until I get even lighter would be beneficial. At what point do other people stop trying to lose weight?

Yep, choose tape measure around the waist over scales, any day, when measuring accurately for progress. You're looking for FAT loss.

You have a chance to change your lifetime way of eating with intermittent fasting and adjusting the type of foods you eat, like reducing/removing grain carbs.

Instead of worrying about where you are going to step off the scales, "Don't count your chickens before they have hatched."

RE: [fast5] Goal Weight Questions

I would go by how your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror. Weight is not a good indicator of where you are and neither is BMI. JMT

Re: [fast5] Barnaby (or others): Fasting reduces insulin

The Japanese, and other Asians, also eat a lot of carbs and little meat. They don't have near the insulin

problems we do in the US. Even though, in China, the average caloric intake is sometimes *higher*.
My take is that the whole carb thing is a red herring. Type 2 diabetes is more subtle than that, and the
only single dietary component I can find that triggers it is dietary iron. This is confusing in the US because:

1. Our carbs mostly have iron added
2. A lot of the well water has iron added
3. We eat more red meat than most countries

So in the US, if you eat more carbs, you get more iron. But that is not true in
Japan, where the rice has no added iron. Nor in France, where they don't iron-fortify the
bread.

It's a complex issue that is beginning to get some research. See:

I tend to think that fasting helps insulin sensitivity partially because it gives the gut
time to deal with permeability and bacterial growth and iron storage issues ... i.e.
"housecleaning". This speaking as a person with lifelong gut issues, that got
fixed mostly via IF. I do know that my fasting blood glucose has gone from 95
to 83 or so, and my diet is hardly "low carb". Most of my dinners consist
of white rice, fish, eggs, and stir-fried vegies. (Which is not "low fat" either: my fish
tends to be fatty and I use coconut oil and bacon liberally when stir frying!).

Today we had: Rice and moo-goo-gai pan with chicken, butternut squash soup, followed
by sweet rice with coconut and banana.

BTW my cholesterol and triglycerides have normalized while doing this,
and my joints are doing well also. Besides Fast-5, I take steps to lower my
iron levels, which were rather high due to well water and probably family
genetics.

Because I am the main cook in the family, the rest of the family also
follows this eating pattern, and I have to say their weight and bloodwork is
all very good. The main things I watch for, for them, are gluten (wheat basically,
which messes up gut permeability) and iron (which like I said, was high in our
water, now fixed: but also it is added to many foods, check the labels). They have
totally free access to sugar (lots of candy! which they ignore) pop (which they ignore)
fruit (which they eat sometimes, mostly if it is at a meal), leftovers (popular!) and
eggs (eggs, pickled or over easy, are a popular snack).

They tend to eat a lot of vegies and "carbs", but not so much the "junk food"
kind of carbs, and it doesn't cause them to gain weight or have health issues.
This is very similar to what I see with Asians ... they eat a lot of carbs, but
don't get overweight from them. There are other issues at play here.

Barnaby - I checked those pages in Eat-Stop-Eat and yes, Brad does say that fasting reduces insulin.

But I note he also said:

"On average, the Cretes were healthier than North Americans, with less incidence of cardiovascular and heart disease.  Researchers attributed this improved health to a high daily intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and olive oil."

"High daily intake" of carbs?  And Brad calls that a "healthy diet".

So, yes, if that is your normal diet, I can see how fasting for 24 hours WILL greatly reduce your insulin levels.

But what if you are in a ketogenic state all the time, by consuming less than 20g carbs/day?  How much lower can your insulin levels go?  Why would it be important, at that point, for them to go lower?

Thanks if you're able to shed more light on this topic...
