Re: [fast5] Re: On I go...

Food issues do get confusing. I found that on Fast5 the food issues are more obvious, and so it's easier to see what is going on. Also by and large, things digest better.

As for grains though ... actually a lot of people don't digest them well. The proteins in wheat NEVER digest completely in human beings, and never have. We lack the correct enzymes. For at least some people, the undigested proteins end up having an opiate effect on the brain, which might be one reason people eat them and they've become part of our culture. It's still all being studied though. We'll figure it all out eventually.

What I found with beans though, is that after my digestion healed, beans digest just fine. Probiotics helped a lot with that .... S. Boulardii is a great one, and for sale at our local pharmacy even. Konjac powder also is good (1/4 tsp. mixed with water, with meals).

I definitely cut out most grains- this is because with F5 I could easily tell how they make me feel- sluggish.

Re: [fast5] On I go...

Hi, Mary -

In order to answer your question, all you really need to do is clarify your goals against your desires.

What I mean is this:  Any of us who are carrying excess body fat would love to see the scale plummet; or more specifically, our waistlines.  I have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder when folks center on "weight" instead of "fat." The scale does not tell the truth, as you well know!  I'm over 6'4" -- excess sodium can help the body retain water, and at my height I can literally fluctuate by five pounds daily - and after a heavy cardio session I'm actually three pounds lighter afterwards.  Your eye can lie, too - if it's coupled to a hypercritical brain.  Get a "target" item of clothing that you'd like to wear, one that's too tight. Clothes do not lie.  Try it on once a week as a measure of your actual progress.

Fast5 isn't a diet, but it's a great way to help your digestion / energy use become more efficient. Fast-acting carbs like flour and sugar are going to get processed into energy quickly, especially after a fasted state -- so they may not satiate hunger as quickly.  Also, if you're a drinker, keep in mind that any alcohol will get processed first.  If you've got food in your system and take in any alcohol, the food will wait until the alcohol gets processed.  If you stay on the fasting plan, get the majority of your calories from proteins, fats, and non-starchy vegetables, and keep your calories in line with a healthy weight for you, you'll eventually get where you want to be.  If you want to get there quicker, talk to your doc about an exercise plan and eat like an athlete.  There's really no 'magic bullet.' Folks who are really fit generally manage their nutrition and energy more tightly, and any normally functioning adult can get there if they employ the same types of self-education.

Hope that helps!
Phil

I would love to see the scale just PLUMMET! But that ain't happening for me at all. I am not UP at all...but my weight varies from 1 to 5 lbs lost on any given day.

I won't get discouraged yet...I kind of have it in my mind to continue eating this way til my birthday at the end of JULY...THEN i'll consider if I have to CHANGE something again.

I reread FAST-5 last night and it just confirmed for me what I would LIKE TO HAVE HAPPEN...Live off the fat stores until at goal weight and then MAINTAIN by watching my weight weekly and adjusting my fasting accordingly.

I am curious though.
Has anyone noticed sensitivities to certain foods moreso than usual?
I did read that it was encouraged to choose fruits and vegetables to break the fast.

I believe that my body is not liking GRAINS at all. If I steer clear of them altogether, I feel better.

How necessary is it to WATCH what you are eating...I do not choose SUGARY things, I don't tend toward CALORIE bombs. I would guess sodium intake and such can affect the scale?

Any input is appreciated!
MARY

Re: [fast5] Back to FAST-5 for good

Mary,
I've lost 42# and still need a c-pap machine. Discouraging, but they don't know why I have it. But I did have my dentist make me a mouth guard that does the same thing. At least it is better than the c-pap. I hope losing enough weight for both of us will eliminate having anything to breath. I need to lose 40# more.

Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Hi Mary - I, too, started (again) about the same time you did. Today marks 5 weeks completed. Congratulations on all the positive benefits you've noticed! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you're able to lose the Apnea machine.

I'm pretty happy with this way of eating - I've also lost weight, though only in the first week, which is a little frustrating. But my arthritis symptoms have disappeared (I'm VERY happy about that!) and I'm thrilled with being back in control. I had snacked my way up to 15 lbs MORE than my all time highest weight. Something had to change. My eating window is 4-7pm (shortening it doesn't seem to have any negative effect so I'll carry on), which means I get almost no opportunity to snack.

Let's hope we can both post happy results in the future.

Best,
(other) Mary

At the beginning of the year my relationship with food got so poor.  I didn't like what I was eating and choosing to eat...I was basically doing a lo carb diet.  So of course, all kinds of things were OFF LIMITS.

I reread Fast-5 and decided it was time for me to TAKE CONTROL.
I am in the middle of week 5, and I now remember that I am eating for nourishment alone...not for emotional support, or any other reason.  I am eating in my window only...my blood pressure is wonderful...i've lost about 6 lbs...my clothes are fitting better, and I feel empowered.

I reread the book, cover to cover and realized that my body will thrive with this way of eating.  It has for almost 5 weeks and I am fully prepared to ENJOY the process of eating to LIVE AND NOT livING TO EAT!

I usually keep my window between 1 and 6....I will go later in the day...but I do not care at all for having anything late at night.  I never have been a NIGHT eater.  This is my year, 2012 was wonderful as I reduced medications and was able to exercise more...
This year will be a year of weight loss, and maybe I'll even lose the CPAP machine for APNEA...MAYBE!!
Wish me luck!
MARY

[fast5] A New Source That Says Fasting is Good!

http://www.newsmaxhealth.com/Headline/mini-fast-Alzheimers-ketones-brain-health/2013/02/07/id/489390?s=al&promo_code=125F3-1

Check out this piece that says researchers have found a 12- 14-hour fast several times a week is good for Alzheimer's patients. Of course, we know a longer fast every day is even better ... but it's nice that they're at least starting down that road!
