Re: [fast5] Supplements in the evening and sleep

Hello Seattle

Spurred on by our quick conversation about meds/vitamins, I now take most of them when I break my fast - typically @ 6-630pm now -   and insure I take the last by 930pm. It seems to work as I go to bed around midnight.

Fortunately, I have no need to take medication so I'm just talking about vitamins. When I needed to take Diclophenic ( which reduced inflammation in my pre-op hip replacement but ripped up my digestive track) I always had it with yoghurt. I felt better but not sure it was an efficacious exercise.

I'm really pleased I inadvertently found Fast-5 as it suits me perfectly. Will modify a bit (coffee w/milk on Sunday morning!) when I lose 12 lbs but otherwise, I'll just live like this. What's not to like!
GL
& kind regards
Pepper

And I've lost 9 lbs since starting on 25 Oct.

The issue of medications and vitamins is problematic, for sure. I'm not sure what
"food" does with meds to protect the stomach either. If it's the OIL in the food,
then theoretically a bit of oil would work, and not affect blood glucose much.

Konjac powder does seem to work with some meds, and it doesn't affect
blood glucose, but it also can slow down the rate at which the meds
are absorbed (which may or may not be a good thing).

I've been fasting - with no problem achieving the full 19 hrs from the get-go   - since 25 Oct and am a much happier, more energised bunny. Yup. Have lost about 5 lbs the first 10 days so that's how much water weight (I rekon) I was carrying around. The next bit of weight to go has been counted in ounces but I'm happy doing it this way. Suits my lifestyle.

BUT
the last couple of nights I have been snoozing; not really sleeping. And I think it might be the vitamins I take - all of which insist to be taken with food. Glucosamine & Omega 3  (3 of) and a Day-Night Nutrition supplement which has borage & echium oil is taken mainly when I break my fast at @ 530pm. Interesting note you made, Heather, about vit C and I'll read the fine print on my supplements.

SO
anyone figured out if taking vitamins during the fast time - with milk say - has a deleterious effect?
My main plan is to lose 10 lbs and then treat myself to a coffee with milk on a Sunday morning, taking vits then.
I'll advise if that works.

Cheers & g.l.a. from sunny Scotland

B vitamins though, keep me awake! I do NOT take them in the evening.

Also, starches and sugars put me to sleep. Proteins, and MCT, wake me up.

What I did for supplements though, is put the cal/mag and Vit C in the evening pocket. Vit C is an anti-histamine, and those always tend to cause sleepiness. The B vitamins I put in the morning pocket.

Some foods, notably the histamine foods, cause wakefulness. Fish sauce is a big one ... really high in histamines. For some people this will cause jitters even.

I have trouble falling asleep sometimes. I was reading that taking supplements late in the day or evening can keep you awake.

I tried switching my meal to breakfast, but then I end up eating all day long.

Anyone here take supplements, and do you notice this?

I don't have sleep problems every day, it's off and on, so maybe it's not the supplements.

Ha, as I google this more, I see that there is quite a bit of disagreement on when to take supplements and whether it helps or hinders sleep.

[fast5] Participate in a Study Comparing Grazing Versus Intermittent Fasting

STUDY COMPARING GRAZING VERSUS TIME‐RESTRICTED FEEDING

I am a scientist, and I am conducting a clinical study to find out which is better for health:

grazing or eating meals in a short time period early in the day (time‐restricted feeding).

I am looking for people who live in or around Baton Rouge, Louisiana to participate in the study.

If you are interested in participating or can help me spread the word, I would be very grateful

for any help. Especially if you know people who live near Baton Rouge who might be interested.

I am looking for overweight men aged 30‐65 to participate in this small pilot study. Details are

below. Thanks!

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to determine which is better for health: grazing on food all day long

or eating meals in a short time period early in the day.

BACKGROUND

Recent evidence suggests that grazing all day long may not be as good for health as widely

believed. Instead, eating within a few hours earlier in the day may facilitate weight loss and

improve blood sugar control. This is known as time‐restricted feeding, and it is a form of

intermittent fasting. In this study, we will test whether grazing versus time‐restricted feeding is

better for health.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Male
  • Age: 30‐65 years old
  • Overweight: BMI between 30‐50
  • (calculate your BMI here: www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/BMI/bmicalc.htm)
  • Do not currently fast or practice intermittent fasting

STUDY REQUIREMENTS

If you participate in the study, you will be required to eat all your meals for two 5 week periods

at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at fixed times each day. Meals will be provided at

no cost to you. In addition, there are 2 screening visits and 4 half‐days of testing.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Earn up to $1800 for participating

10 weeks of meals provided at no cost to you

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

If you are interested in participating in the TIMED EATING study, visit

https://my.pbrc.edu/?Study=0495‐0000 to screen online, call 225‐763‐3000, or email

clinicaltrials@pbrc.edu.
