Re: [fast5] Binging/overeating

Maybe listen to your appestat?

My general philosophy is that you have a LOT of neurons devoted to your gut. More than you have in your brain, actually. Those neurons are mostly there to analyze what you need to eat.  Somewhere, your body knows what it wants.

If it craves high-calorie foods ... maybe it doesn't want to lose those last 5 lbs. Why? Or, is it a matter of feeding your brain? Your brain mainly works on glucose, and your brain uses a big chunk of your calories. If you don't have enough glycogen stored for your brain, where is it going to come from? Mainly starches and fruit, I think. Nuts are full of calories, but they are also loaded with vitamins etc.

One thing that seems to work for the more body-builder people though, is to work on "food order". I.e., when you break your fast, start in a particular order:

1. A big salad. Use vinegar ... vinegar has an odd effect on blood glucose. I haven't seen any real explanation of why this is, but in studies, it definitely shows up, consistently. Something about greens too. Add a few nuts and raisins too, if you want, and a dash of oil. MCT oil, in particular, seems to have an interesting effect on the metabolism and fat storage (MCT is found a lot in breast milk, and your body really likes it).

2. Protein and vegies. Your main dish. Some meat or fish (fish might be better for fat loss, IMO), plus cooked vegies (lots). Fill up! Use spices. Keep salt low (it seems to push people to overeat).

3. THEN eat starches, if you are still hungry.

4. Last, dessert. But I never make it to that level.

What I have seen in many of the more athletic people though, is that "keeping calories low" just doesn't work. If you are working out AND keeping calories low, your body might just go into major revolt and refuse to let go of the fat. The people who are really into being "ripped" seem to do it by making very specific food choices. And it's an art beyond the "losing weight" realm of things.

My diet is pretty balanced otherwise and I am sticking to 19 hours pretty well. I avoid grains/potatoes but eat fruit and obviously dried fruit. But I didn't have this problem before fasting/ calorie restriction... I did snack a lot on chips and some sweets. I was never overweight but approaching if I continued as I was.

HA! Lemming Amigos! Good one. :)

I've never been consistently so thin as I have been over the last two and a half years. I look around now and just can't imagine eating as much as other folks seem to.

If I haven't said it recently, Thanks so much Bert!

They do have interesting tidbits here and there though. One that I found on the checkstand: it turns out that high-salt diets, when fed to rats ... the salt interferes with the ability of fat to move out of fat cells. Which goes totally against the usual thought, which is that salt is a non-caloric substance and therefore shouldn't affect weight one way or another (except insofar as water retention).

Re: [fast5] Parade Magazine Misinformation

Yeah, the old "if you don't eat constantly, your body can't possibly maintain a decent blood sugar".

I sometimes wonder if the fact that those magazines are supported by advertisements for snack foods and protein drinks has something to do with that? It's funny reading the women's magazines: half the magazine is loaded with information for dieting, and the other half is loaded with recipes for desserts.

Re: [fast5] Re: Close to goal

It's hard to fight biology. Women are healthiest with a certain amount of fat tissue, so that "ripped" look just isn't natural for females.

Not feeling satisfied though ... there probably is a reason for that. I had a big problem with that when I was on one particular diet some years ago. I think it was just missing some kinds of fats, and my body rebelled. My skin got very dry and wrinkly too. I was eating mainly no animal fats at all, and probably mostly canola when I did have fat. These days we do more bacon, coconut oil, olive oil, and we have a higher satiation level and our skin is a lot healthier too.

I feel like I am either over eating or under eating. I can't find that sweet spot of where I lose slowly but don't lose control and binge because of "hunger". It is like my stomach is full but I feel like my body is missing something. I was hoping that there was something about the fasting itself that helped the fat burning but maybe it is still calories in and out but more satisfying.

[fast5] Hi newbie wanting some encouragement

H i evreryone I have been experimenting for around 2 months and have decided that after losing/gaining/losing 12-14lb in that time scale that this could really work for me.

I am trying to eat dinner each day consisting of 3-4 courses of ultra healthy low carb food (to help severe health issues)and then on weekends a more relaxed windo of 8 hours with some goodies to look forward to.During my experimenting I have noticed that the days i do eat goodies my appitite is so reduced that I can eat quite 'normal' portions and not sucumb to bingeing.

My health issues are severe and losing weight very important to reduce these I have also had a year of very intense EMDR therapy to finally come to terms with very difficult emotional/mental issues dating back over 45 years.

I feel so much better in everyway so my eating is the issue I am now needing to sort out.Only eating once a day seems to help with making good food choices and being committed to weightloss and a healthy lifestyle.

Any way please could some of you share your weightloss and any health benefits you have noticed with me I would find it so helpful Thanks.

Re: [fast5] Close to goal

When people get down to that last 5 lbs ... I think you run into disagreements with your body about what really is the "right" weight for your body. Your brain has a very sophisticated system built in,and it has it's own ideas of what it thinks you should have in regards to body fat. People who are movie stars or doing body sculpting can do a lot of careful tweaking.

But the thing is: somewhere you or someone decided that you need a certain weight. Now, that weight is decided on what, exactly? If you are in good shape, your muscle is more compact, and it's going to weigh more: that is a good thing! Or maybe the extra 5 lbs is just water ... because for some reason your body things you need more stored water, or more glycogen in your liver in case you need to run a long way. Is that a bad thing? How about if it's an extra 5 lbs of fat ... maybe your body decides you need that fat to cushion your organs? Or maybe you are building more bone mass, and that bone is heavy!

So before you work really hard at getting rid of that last 5 lbs ... figure out what the "5 lbs" is made of, and why you want to get rid of it. You don't want to work really hard to lose 5 lbs of something you need.

My daughter, BTW, is very athletic. Her weight is rather high though. I suspect she is a solid mass of muscle. However, no matter how athletic she is, she never did lose some of the "curves" that make her looking female. I think she'd like to "weight less" but if she does, she's just going to look scrawny rather than awesome. I think it makes a lot more sense to work on making your body work better, and don't worry about the scale.

[fast5] Interesting insulin tidbit...

I was reading http://zeroinginonhealth.com/sweeteners.html looking for information on how to curb my desire to snack. I've quit commuting by bicycle for now and my appetite has gone way down as a result. But some days I get ravenous and will binge on things like PB&J sandwiches. I noticed that if I have anything like a DietRite soda and rum, or a glass of wine, or Sweet N Low in my coffee, I'll become ravenously hungry.

Anyway, I came across the following which makes as much sense to me as just about anything else I've read on the subject. It seems that some people have a hyper secretion of insulin in response to sweetness. The body, in an attempt to utilize the "overdose" of insulin will crave food until all of the insulin has been used and the body's hunger regulating hormones return to normal...

________

In 1977, Purdue University psychologist Terry Powley described a vicious cycle that was created with hyper secretion of insulin.

"Rather than secreting quantities of insulin and digestive enzymes appropriate for effective utilization of the ingested material, the animal over secretes and must then ingest enough calories to balance the hormonal and metabolic adjustments."

Powley did not suggest that his happened in humans, but his colleague, Judith Rodin did. In 1985, she suggested that

"acute hyperinsulinemia can be induced in some individuals by simply looking at or thinking about food and it too can lead to increased consumption and possible weight gain."

The only way to reverse this condition is to eliminate carbohydrates from the diet, which will cause the body to gradually reduce the insulin secretion and eliminate the expectation of dietary glucose.
