[fast5] OT: walking works for me

I suppose exercise is sort of off topic, but I just thought I would mention this.

I live in a city where I walk a lot and it's an easy way for me to put some exercise in by walking quickly. I can walk for my errands, it helps me a lot.

I have also read that walking is an exercise with the least risk of injury.

To lose weight, put a little spring in your step

When it comes to weight control, almost nothing is easier and cheaper than brisk walking.
Going for a walk every day can improve mood, increase energy, lower blood pressure and protect against diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer.
But to reap these benefits, you need to get the lead out and put some spring in your step.
It's not window shopping or taking a stroll in the park. Walk like you're late for the bus.
You should be able to carry on a conversation, but you'll be a little breathless when you talk, says Miriam Nelson, director of the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Prevention at Tufts University in Boston.
You should be able to feel that your heart rate is up. Keep in mind that a brisk walk for one person may be a stroll for another, she says.
Pace yourself. If you are just starting out with a walking program, you should try to work up to a pace of at least 3 mph, says Anne Lusk, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Here's another way to look at it:
• Less than 3 mph is considered slow walking.
•More than 3 mph is considered brisk walking.
•More than 4 mph is considered very brisk walking.

She says to figure out your speed, count your steps per minute: 3 mph is about 120 steps a minute, while 4 mph is about 135 steps a minute.
Besides increasing your pace, you may also need to increase the number of steps you take.

Re: [fast5] Re: Couple of Questions need some ideas

Well, sounds like a good experiment! I can tell you from what I've read from various people posting, that you might not have to worry so much about "magic numbers" on Fast-5. Whatever the body is doing on this way of eating, it is different from the normal feeding algorithms in the books. Personally, when I'm "on a diet", my metabolism goes into a tailspin. On Fast-5, I actually eat quite a bit less, but my metabolism is doing fine, and I'm not hungry. Which doesn't make sense, except that I think I'm actually digesting food better, and insulin metabolism is different.

So anyway, your experience in the past might not hold true with this way of eating. If you read the archives, a lot of people do worry about the whole "starvation syndrome" thing because they appear to be eating too little, but this doesn't seem to cause a problem.

Once I acheive my goal weight, I won't worry about it as much because I do feel as long as you are eating a lot of fruits and veggies and getting proper nutrition the number doesn't necessarily matter as much.  1000 calories of doughnuts is not in anyway nutritionally the same as a meal that has a lot of veggies, fruit, and protien.

Re: [fast5] Re: Couple of Questions need some ideas

One thing Fast-5 does is change: 1) Your appetite and 2) How well you process food. OK, the second one is my addition, not Dr. Herring's. But I digest food way better than I used to, even though I'm eating way less and my metabolism has not slowed.

I think it's a mistake to count calories too closely, unless you are having problems. 15 lbs overweight may or may not be "over fat" ... if you work out, you are probably gaining muscle and even bone. But here is the deal: your appetite KNOWS what your body needs. That is what it is designed for. In most creatures, it works exquisitely, and the creature only eats as much as it needs.

If you eat a low-nutrient diet, your body will adapt such that you can eat more calories, just so it can get the nutrients. It may not actually digest all those calories (there are lots of bacteria that can digest it instead, for instance). Or it may decide to digest the extra calories and store them as fat, depending on some triggers people don't understand well just yet.

But if you are truly not eating "enough", and you are paying attention to your appetite and how you feel, you will be HUNGRY and want to eat more. This is a good thing. The fact you are not underweight, and not hungry, I would think means: your body is quite happy with your food level. OK, so some book somewhere might disagree. But your body is, right now, doing way more accurate measurements on you than any lab can.

Now, if you start going really skinny, lose your appetite, get sick often, have no strength, get depressed, get dry skin, can't get out of bed ... something is wrong. Then it's time to figure out what is going on.

Otherwise ... I think of my Dad. When he was born, the medical community was saying that a newborn needed exactly 4 oz of milk. He was a huge baby, and always hungry, but they would only give him 4 oz. So he cried a lot. Now, when I had my daughter, I dutifully asked: "how much should I feed her?". The doc just laughed. "But what if I feed her too much?" He laughed again "You can't overfeed a baby!".

He was right. Babies haven't been taught to eat more than they want, and they'll just toss up the extra. Usually the slurp and slurp and then go to sleep. Adults SHOULD be like that!

So right now, if you indeed have 15 extra lbs of fat: perhaps your body is saying: I want to get rid of this 15 extra pounds. I'm not turning on hunger, til it's gone.

Although the difference today then in the past is that I'm eating a lot more fruits and veggies vs processed grains.  So technically I'm guessing I am getting more nutrients.

Sounds like it should be pretty easy to get enough calories then. Most of the calories in a meal come from the fat part (fruits and vegies are mainly water and fiber). I'm not sure why you need more calories though: if you aren't hungry for more food and you have enough energy and aren't underweight? However, if you do need easy calories, one thing I've done is to make coconut oil candies. You can also pulse dates or other dried fruit in the food processor, and mix with seeds, coconut, or other crunchy bits. And of course there are meals with plenty of calories, like fried fish!

Grains even rice and quinoa cause me to have a constant sinus headache and pressure, although I could try then again now that I'm doing fast 5.  I don't have as many sinus problems and it is my peak allergy season.  I haven't even had to take any allergy meds.

Diary typically just causes mucus in my throat, but that is mainly when I drink milk or have ice cream, not really with cheese.

Re: [fast5] Couple of Questions need some ideas

Hi Maria.

I would try to eat something that gives a low insulin response, ie. not fruits or yams or any other carb-major foods. A piece of beef or chicken with some fats (butter or cocnut) should get you satisfied until your post-workout meal.

You don't mention meat or fish in your list, or eggs? Are you vegetarian too? The foods you list are all very low calorie. My inclination would be to add, say, fatty fish, or coconut oil, both of which digest easily. White rice is usually easy to digest too. If you eat ginger or kimchi with meals, that definitely helps digestion. So does konjac powder.

Dairy is hard for a lot of people to digest, but if you can do cheese it might help.

[fast5] Re: Fast 5 on vacation

Congratulations! I did the opposite, I went on a 3 day trip with a group of people. I went off Fast-5, and off any diet, and gained 4 pounds. Duh.

I just wanted to be part of the group and not make a fuss. I ate a lot of bread, for one thing, I normally don't eat. Not to mention 3 meals a day.

Well, I will fast it back off.

Fruit I can't have pears, mangos, bananas, and apples I can only have 1 every couple of days or I react. Pineapples I react sometimes. No citrus fruit either. I can only eat so much squash(including melons) without a problem too.

I'm just looking for some suggestions on trying to increase my calories. I'm thinking about maybe cycling yams some days and cheese another to help increase my intake a little. Any other thoughts?

[fast5] Fast 5 on vacation

I went on vacation to the beach last week and adhered mostly to Fast-5 the whole time. The exception was that I used half and half in my coffee instead of my usual heavy cream. It's REALLY tough to find heavy cream in this fat-phobic world.

Anyway,I didn't gain any weight during the trip so it seems that fast-5 is an effective tool for controlling your weight even on vacation. YAY Fast-5!

As many of you may remember, I ride a bike to work and I also generally have really huge food cravings while at home no matter what I eat during my window. I noticed last week while on vacation that I wasn't hardly hungry. As far as I can tell, it could be one of three things:

1) No exercise
2) Lots of sleep
3) No stress

Could be a combination of the three FAIK. But it sure was nice not to crave food. Now that I'm back home, getting up early, and back on the bike, I'm craving more food again.

Thought I'd share in case anyone is struggling with food cravings.

Re: [fast5] Official 2 week mark

Glad it is working for you!

I just started doing the "water first thing in the morning" routine (rather than my usual cup of coffee) and I have to say I feel a lot more energized and my stomach is happier.

I found that I'm really only hungry if I don't eat enough the days I workout, or I don't drink a bottle of water when I wake up.  Normally first thing when I wake up I go to the bathroom, let my dog out so she can go, then I drink 16oz bottle of water. Well this morning I didn't so my stomach has been grumbling and I've felt hungry.

But it is going great so far.  My stomach issues from my allergies have subsided quite a bit and when I have a problem it doesn't last for several hours, it just seems to last for maybe an hour.  I've also managed to loose 4lbs the last two weeks too.

It seems between this, and eating mostly Paleo (I eat paleo 80% of the time) is the perfect combination for me.

[fast5] Re: OT: Fast Five movie

It's a pretty funny overlap. Maybe someday fast cars and fasting will be equally cool in pop culture. There was a pretty big spike in the Fast-5 website traffic when the Fast Five movie trailer was released in November, and now the traffic's up quite a bit. It'd be a pretty unconventional way for Fast-5 to become much more widely known, but nice if it helps.

The movie makers didn't make an offer for the domain name, and went with http://www.fastfivemovie.com/

Re: [fast5] Re: First Week Done

BTW, one of the issues I had eating once a day was acid reflux and GERD. Actually I probably had it before too, but didn't notice it as much. Anyway, as an experiment I tried something someone recommended, and by golly it works! It's called D-Limonene, and you can buy it online. Extract of orange peels. No one seems to know why it works, but interestingly, after taking it for 2 weeks, people got relief for 6 months afterward, without taking it.

It comes in two brands: one is a pack of 12 overpriced pills, the other is a whole bottle of them for a much better price. It seems to do fine on an empty stomach, or with a meal.

When I have days that I am hungry, it is almost always because I started eating the day before with carbs.  If I break my fast with protein and/or fat, I'm fine.  Since I like cheese, having a piece or two of cheese while getting the rest of my meal ready seems to work well.

My window is also 3-8.  Since I have had acid reflux which lead to Barrett's Esophagus, my Dr. wants me to not eat for 2 hours before going to bed.  So even if I go to bed fairly early, that fits.

Fast-5 is a pretty easy habit to get into for the long term.  I've been eating this way since Aug 2009.  Lost about 40 lbs pretty quickly.  Not a lot of loss since Jan 2010, but I have been happy with the way I feel and haven't worried about sticking with my window all the time anymore.  Usually it's only when there is a reason such as a luncheon, party, etc.  During the first 6 months or so, I really stuck to my window because if I didn't (even once), I would put on weight that week.

[fast5] Re: First Week Done

welcome maria and good luck with fast 5. i am on week six myself but i was on it a month and quit and came back. i truly believe it is a great way to live and the reasons behind it are solid. if you need or want additional support we have a small group on spark people: http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_individual.asp

also, my son has terrible allergies and i did some serious research 2 days ago. this is some of what i learned:

eat local honey. the bees are getting the local polllins into the honey and the theory is you will consume a little each day and your body will create immunities. kind of like drinking a little poison every day to become immune! lol

tea made from stinging nettles will help with symptoms. read up on that because you have to get them before they flower.. this is very important.

use a nettie pot and do it every day! you can buy the in stores, at amazon and ebay.

again, good luck

Re: [fast5] First Week Done

Welcome to the group!

I do Fast-5 primarily to heal my gut, and it has worked extremely well. My basic problem was celiac, but that was undiagnosed for 40+ years, and it left me with a rather damaged digestive tract. My take is that Fast-5 gives the system time to do "do housecleaning" while it's empty.

As you say, it's a lot easier to find "problem foods" if you only eat once a day. But also, foods that I used to have problems with, stopped being problematic. I can digest pretty much anything these days (except wheat, of course).

The other thing that helped for digestion is konjac. I take 1/4 tsp. of it with meals. It is known to help people who have problems digesting starch, but I think it works for most foods. Basically it feeds the good bacteria in the lower gut, and also slows down stomach emptying so there is more time for digestive juices to work. Some people get gas from it when they first take it though, so it might take some getting used to.

Re: [fast5] Re: Is diet soda slowing me down?

I think the key word is "in excess."  Two sodas a day isn't excessive.  Six might be, for instance.

I think the keys words here are "CAN be". I know that for me, I wouldn't have made it in my early weeks without my Lime Diet Coke before my window opened. I think it's an individual thing whether or not limbic hunger is stimulated. Of course, I need to note that I've never had more than one or two 12 oz. cans in a day. I drink LOTS of regular water in addition to the flavored calorie-free water I drink throughout the day.

Recently, I bought a glucometer because I was curious as to whether I would have an insulin response to the artificial sweetener in my soda when in a fasted state. There was none. No spike at all. I've also noticed that, for me, I've felt no increase in appetite after drinking the soda, but instead an actual decrease in my appetite. That's just me, though. My experiment of one.

Now that I'm into my 13th week, I find that I'm naturally drinking diet soda less and less...but that doesn't mean I'm giving it up completely, unless my tastes change. Personally, I think there is too much hype about diet soda and the seemingly endless list of everything else that is supposedly "bad" for you. I prefer to travel my own path of moderation. Everyone knows themselves best and should do what feels best for their own bodies.

Re: [fast5] Re: Is diet soda slowing me down?

One thing I noticed about diet soda: every time you want one, you have to open a can or bottle. I got more cognizant of this because we don't actually have garbage pickup where I live, so I have to recycle each one of those bloomin' cans or bottles and take them to the recycle place, every week. The amount of "pop" a few people can go through in a week is kind of scary.

What we've mostly done in my family is switch to tea. We have a "hot shot" kind of thing that gives instant tea water, and everyone has their favorite teas. Mine is Neem, which I get from Neemtreefarms. I also grow lemon verbena and a couple of others. I keep the leaves in the freezer, so I can just grab a few to add to the hot water. Other people like the dried teas, like chamomile and mint.

Anyway, it's a different habit. The teas, to me, taste "fresher" and less artificial, and I don't actually miss the sweet (or artificial sweet) taste. I do like fizzy stuff though, and have experimented with "poor man's pop" (vinegar and baking soda, which is actually rather good!) and fizz water of various types. I don't like all the recycles though, so I try for homemade!
