[fast5] 180degreehealth

Hello everyone!

I have been lurking for a while and not posting because haven't had anything new to ad until recently.

I stumbled upon 180degreehealth.com when I was searching for heartburn remedies. I wasn't really aware that it was a weight loss diet also until I bought it ($99 for tons of ebooks and audio mp3's).

Even though I was doing F5 plus paleo I was having heartburn and it was really ticking me off because I was making sure to eat lots of alkalining vegetables and it just didn't make sense.

Anywoo I spent this summer doing the 180degreehealth diet and not only did my heartburn go away in 3 weeks but I lost 20 more lbs and I was stuck at an over 2 year weight plateau.

To describe the diet is impossible because everyone will eat differently and the core of the diet is a reeducation and to hear "what I eat" without first knowing why will absolutely cause you to not buy it and give it a try. It's totally the opposite of what EVERYONE else is saying and everything is not only researched but it makes common sense.

We all know people that can eat whatever they want and never gain weight and also know people that eat picture perfect diets that are carrying an extra 40 or more pounds and this program covers that first. I've read every diet book on the shelves and most of what's online (that's not fanatical - no raw foodist or vegetarian etc) and I have NEVER heard 80% of the stuff he said. I honestly was blown away and it works and it blends in perfectly with Intermittent Fasting and eating 6 times a day if you want, which I did try for a while just as an experiment to see if I got heartburn and I didn't which was amazing. It's just impossible to describe and I've already saved more than $99 at the grocery store eating this way. At social gatherings I eat what everyone else is eating and even eat double the amount they are and I must honestly say I am now one of those people that eat whatever they want and don't gain weight.

I even cut my exercise in half in fact now I only do bodyweight training at home and yoga 2-3 times a week for only half an hour and sometimes even only 15 minutes warmup/cooldown included. I learned that I was overtrained before and my hormones were totally out of whack and I was hormonally in fat storing mode most of the time from my own doing in the exercise department and from restricting foods that I didn't need to that had nutrients in them that made your body build muscle and burn fat. I was doing it to myself and I had no idea because I was listening to so many people that were well educated and had great bodies.

I really don't know what else to say other than I truly believe it will be the best $99 you ever spend. I hope you give it a go.

[fast5] Re: End of experimental month

That is wonderful and motivating for me! I am about 1.5 weeks in. I have had 4-5 bad days & have still lost 3 pounds I wouldn't have lost otherwise. Your post helps keep me going & puts me back on the straight & narrow. So thank you! My window has been 5-10pm because I do like to have a healthy snack after the kids go to bed. I'll have to try & make sure I get some coconut oil in as well...thanks for the reminder! Keep up the great work!

Sometimes, if I have been cooking dinner early and it is smelling really good, I will eat a small amount of that, and then have my apple around 4. It *is* strange that you're packing a few extra pounds after eating FF-like
for many years but the fact that you've lost nearly 10 lbs
(congratulations!!!) in a month of FF'ing *with awareness* suggests to me
that awareness is going to be the key to beating my own weight problem. I've
read that once I've lost weight, I'll need to eat pretty much the same way
(as I did while losing weight) for as long as I want to keep the weight off.
I guess it pays to enjoy the "diet" I'm on because I'll be on it for a
loooong time....

Thanks for the update.

Re: [fast5] Re: Day 5

Probably the issues on "animal cruelty" are for a different forum.

I will say that in nature, the majority of males in herds get killed or driven off, mostly by other males. No chicken farmer can keep the all the males, because they kill each other. Traditionally in farming, the young males are dinner, while the ewes and cows and hens provide wool, milk, and eggs. Soft-hearted first-time farmers like me try to keep the males, and if you want to see animal cruelty, watch them attack each other! So any animal product you eat has the same issue: farmers can't keep the males.

Even so, the survivor rate of farm animals is much higher than it is in the wild, where most young never make adulthood at all, and the average lifespan is shorter. A well-run farm is a good place, with happy animals, even if the animals are corralled. Heifer International has done great things for helping ensure the food supply of rural peoples, by training people in how to keep animals. They are a great source of fertilizer.

There are people who believe no animals should die, ever. That is a philosophical decision. However, if you get TOO much into this, you have to take into account the millions of acres of land that are destroyed to grow soybeans and wheat, which not only destroy the land, but also the runoff destroys thousands of acres of sea life. Soybean fields are one of the biggest causes of destruction of rainforests.

Also, since humans (often by farming) have sent many wild species to distinction, keep in mind that the domesticated animals are the ones that still EXIST. From a survivor point of view, cows, chickens, goats and pigs are thriving, while their wild cousins are not.

Anyway, I'm all for investigating the sources of YOUR food, and buying locally. Right now at our market, there is a huge variety of brands available, and loads of local small growers too. The local farms I've seen are very good places, and the bigger ones are nothing like what floats around on YouTube.

Re: [fast5] Re: Day 5

>Hi All!

>If one does not have access to free range farm eggs, is it still better to eat commercial eggs rather than eating no eggs due to quality?

>.Thanks,
>Sharan

Yes! We don't have our own eggs sometimes because they don't lay as much in winter,
and we get eggs from the store. And keep in mind that most studies on eggs are
done using very low quality eggs!

Keeping chickens indoors as not as bad as it seems. We used to let us go truly free-range,
but predators came that could jump fences, and ate about half of them. So they are in
a big barn now. Before that they were in an old dog kennel. I saw some happy hens
once in the corner of a garage, in an area 4x8 feet, walled off with chicken wire.
The farmer had used wood pellets for litter, and it was very clean and neat. Those
where his private egg-layers.

My chickens are not unhappy about being in a house! They are very territorial, and like their one
area. In fact, they CAN fly out, in this case, but don't. They stay near the food. Also,
they are not prairie birds ... they are descended from jungle birds, and prefer to huddle
under trees or perch in branches, not to sit in an open area. Direct sunlight is too much
heat for them, most of the time (they do like "sunning" for a bit though, and need that).

So what matters for egg quality isn't that they eat "grass" ... unlike a goose, they don't
digest grass much. But they do like access to some sun, room to move around.
And insects or some other protein. And here is the problem with the current
"free range" eggs. They boast the birds are fed a "vegetarian" diet. People!
Chickens are not vegetarian! They love bugs. And meat, fish, fruit, etc.

"Free range" eggs get some insects, but a few chickens decimates the local
insect population very quickly. There isn't enough food in a grassy field to
actually feed a laying hen, so mostly they get commercial chicken pellets ...
vegetarian organic ones, if they are organic-egg chickens. Basically grains
and legumes, which is ok, but not their favorite diet.

So our egg quality went way UP when we "cooped up" our chickens. Thicker, oranger
egg yolks, thicker shells. The main difference? We started feeding them more
leftovers. Ours and from those who "donate" their kitchen scraps also.

The only eggs that are similar in the market are "Eggland's Best" ... they
feed their chickens fish meal, I believe. They are a little pricier, but really,
eggs are just very cheap compared to other foods anyway.

Also in our area, some of the stores sell local eggs from very small farms.
Those are often very good too.

The ideal, which of course not all people can do, is to have a "chicken
tractor" ... a little coop that can move around the yard, keep a couple of birds,
which is enough for one person's eggs generally. AND use up your kitchen
waste, kill bugs, fertilize. Hens are way easier to keep than say, a dog. In
much of the country, "suburban chickens" are becoming the norm,
and even Williams Sonoma is selling upscale chicken houses!.

[fast5] Re: Day 5

Good for you! I am on week 4 and I have lost 7 lbs so far. I am really excited about it.

I recommend getting on the scale and measuring as well. It is such a motivator for me. That way I have a number for if I feel hungry.

It is amazing how we train yourselves to eat meals and snacks all day. I have so much more time and mental freedom with this WOE. No need to plan what to eat all day- plus, I get to make yummy food for my family and enjoy the food with them at dinner.

Keep in touch and good luck!

[fast5] Re: Day 5

Hi All!

If one does not have access to free range farm eggs, is it still better to eat commercial eggs rather than eating no eggs due to quality?

Thanks,

Re: [fast5] Day 5

Yes, eggs are magic! Actually I've been reading about eggs for awhile now, and the more I learn, the more amazing they are. There are specific compounds in eggs that make you more alert (orexin) and cut appetite (methionine), as well as fats that are good for your skin and brain cells. And the minerals you need too. Orexin also changes how glucose effects the brain, so it offsets some of what happens when glucose rises in the body after a meal.

=======================================

Firing rate

Previously, researchers have shown that orexin neurons can be inhibited by glucose, but it was not known how sensitive they were. Burdakov's team exposed orexin neurons to subtle changes in glucose levels similar to those that occur in the blood during daily cycles of eating and hunger, then measured their firing rate.

"What we discovered is the activity of the neurons can be turned off by minute elevations in glucose associated with normal meals," says Burdakov. The glucose is thought to act on potassium ion channels in the neurons' membrane.

He believes this could explain why we naturally feel sleepy after a meal and also why it can be difficult to sleep when we are hungry, since the activity of the neurons would be higher when there is less glucose in the blood.

"We think orexin neurons make sure that we are awake and alert when hungry, in order to ensure optimal food-seeking," Burdakov says. He adds that it makes evolutionary sense for animals to turn off their wakefulness and conserve energy once they have eaten their food, since it could be risky or wasteful to expend too much energy looking for more food.

Obesity trigger

Changes in the sensitivity of orexin neurons to glucose could lead to obesity, Burdakov speculates.

Orexin neurons are known to help regulate appetite and metabolic rate, and when they become faulty this can trigger late-onset obesity. Researchers are currently trying to understand exactly how orexin neurons interact with other brain circuits involved in appetite regulation.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn9272-why-we-need-a-siesta-after-dinner.html

=============================================

They are selling an orexin supplement now, but shoot, why not just have an omelet?

I actually think that the advice "Don't eat more than 2 eggs a week" might have been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic.

Esp. since most of the snack foods don't contain eggs anymore ... homemade cookies and desserts usually had eggs in them, but commercial ones don't (eggs cost more and aren't good for shelf-life) .... commercial baked goods are just not filling and so easy to over-eat. For my family, I make a point of always having lots of eggs in breads, cookies, and desserts. And although they do love those items, they don't get fat from them. My husband, 57, has perfect blood pressure, hair not grey, nice skin, and can still shovel loads of heavy gravel. My kids are in good shape too.

Re: [fast5] Calorie restriction...

I think one of the problems with these studies is that they are still concentrating on "calories". I think the research is showing more and more that it's not about "calories", but rather some tweaks in food choices and timing. Chinese men, for instance, matched for exercise levels with American men, eat MORE calories and are skinnier.

Personally I'm liking the uric acid theory. When uric acid levels go up, so do triglycerides, and so does hunger level, and this works in a variety of animals, not just humans. Some foods do trigger high uric acid levels, some do not, and some actually lower uric acid levels. The interactions are fairly complex, which makes it harder to figure out, why one person can eat all they want, and another gets fat no matter what.

So when they are feeding monkeys a "refined carb diet" ... what carbs are they using? Fructose is the worst on uric acid levels. Wheat flour is bad for reasons other than the carb content, and usually has added iron, which increases uric acid levels. Most all sugars we commonly use are half fructose. Whole fruit can be high in fructose, but also has Vit C, which offsets the fructose.

The average person eating a traditional East Asian diet doesn't worry too much about calories, but stays thin. The East Asian diet is one that happens to not trigger high uric-acid levels, and the people eating that way do tend to consume less food, but it's mainly because they are not hungry all the time.

[fast5] Re: two weeks in

Big Thank you to Rick for answering questions ! It is really nice to hear what you have to say. I LOVE that this WOE is so easy. No crazy rules to follow. I have lost weight enough that people are asking me about it- I have only talked to one person about it and they thought it was bat#%@! crazy. Thought they might starve if they even tried it. I bet they will ask again pretty soon.

My agreement with myself is to go the month of Oct and see how I feel about F5 then. At this point- I am a lifer. I feel pretty great.

Glad to hear from others and hear how you are going!

Today I am 204. I am in for a long haul- but, I am inspired. Anyone else out there looking to lose about 40 lbs.? I know that one way to success for me will be to get on the scale once a week forever. It is so easy to not get on when you know you are gaining.

Re: [fast5] Re: Rick's meal choices

You are fortunate! Homegrown chickens absolutely make the best eggs.

One thing about chickens too ... they are great garbage disposals/composters. Mine get a lot of kitchen scraps, from my family and another. They are omnivores and eat about anything, and compost the rest into great manure. Some local people are collecting scraps from local restaurants too, to feed their chickens.

Think about this: 3/4 of the food grown in the US is just thrown out, mostly going to landfills. That would feed a whole lot of chickens!

Re: [fast5] Rick's meal choices

I've been doing a fair amount of research lately on the "best" sources for fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, etc. In all counts, the lowly egg comes on top. Protein-wise, egg white is considered the "perfect" mix of amino acids, by which all other protein mixes are measured. Fat-wise, egg yolk contains fatty acids that are very hard to get otherwise. An egg basically has all the ingredients needed to make a chicken, and chickens are omnivores, like us. Birds also use the version of sialic acid (Neu5ac) that humans have, while mammal meat uses Neu5gc, which is inflammatory for a lot of people.

Anyway, we got "scared off" eggs in the '70s, but the research never really showed any negative effects from eating eggs. The research was all based on the theoretical issues of "eating cholesterol". Since the '70s, egg consumption has gone down in the US, but heart disease has gone up. Not so in, say, Japan or China, which eat way more eggs and have lower levels of heart disease.

So yeah, eggs rock! They are also very good at "satiety", so people who tend to eat too much ... start your meal with eggs, or at least include them, in sauces, pickled chopped eggs on salads, egg drop soup, etc.

One of the best things about this WOE is you don't have to think back at the end of the day about the food choices you made throughout the day because... well there were none.  I like not having to think about "should I or shouldn't I" with respect to what to eat earlier in the day. You just don't, problem solved.

[fast5] Rick's meal choices

I love the simplicity of Rick's meals. Tonight I am going to do the hard boiled egg, tuna, sour cream ensemble. I might add a couple chopped up olives.

Lately I have been hooked on 3 eggs in a frying pan with a pouch of salmon and some shredded cheese all stirred up together. Usually I also steam a BIG bunch of spinach to go along with that.

One of the best things about this WOE is you don't have to think back at the end of the day about the food choices you made throughout the day because... well there were none. I like not having to think about "should I or shouldn't I" with respect to what to eat earlier in the day. You just don't, problem solved.

[fast5] Re: Starting today!

Thanks! Good luck to you too! I actually am starting over today officially. I mindlessly started eating yesterday afternoon before my window opened at 5:00. So here's to another start and staying off the scale until Wednesday. :)

Since then, I have not been able to get the weight off. Good luck to you! I hope this works as well as it seems to according to all the great reviews I've read!
