Ignore the "Hey - Bob" intro... that was a copy/paste error! :)

[fast5] Re: What just happened???

Hey Bob - I just finished with my doctor visit.

He did some routine tests… checked my blood pressure, checked my vision, asked me some diagnostic questions, etc.

He told me that I was okay.  He said that if something serious happened, I would not have been able to walk myself out of the gym.

He said the question is, what caused this?  Is there some other condition that exists which caused this to happen, or was it strictly caused by overexertion?

He ordered an MRA... I'm going to call and have it scheduled right away.  He said he didn't want me doing any exercise and if the symptoms return to go to the ER.

One thing that I forgot to ask him was whether or not this could be related to stress? I do have a very stressful job.

Thank you for your information and guidance I'll keep you all posted.

[fast5] Re: What just happened???

Thank you for the information Heather.

Prior to working out this morning, I had already drink 64 ounces of ACV water and I had one diet soda.

Also this was the very first exercise. I remember thinking to myself when I was doing set one how easy it was.

Then I remember on set two thinking how much harder it was this time... that's about when the headache came on.

Maybe I wasn't breathing right? Even then, that headache was over-the-top... I can't imagine that's what the cause was.

I'm seeing my doctor in two hours. I will let everyone know what he says.

Travis

Re: [fast5] Re: What just happened???

I've been weight training in a fasted state, on and off for at least three years now - got back "on the bandwagon" last October.  I'm 6'4", currently weigh 275-280 and have sort of an ex-linebacker build (though I played saxophone in college, LOL).  My incline bench routine is usually 4-6 sets of decreasing reps, starting at 210-230 and maxing out from between 270 and 290.

There are times when I have been exceptionally fatigued, exceptionally early (usually as a result of under-feeding the day before); however I've never experienced that kind of headache as a result of fasting.  That said, I have experienced that kind of head pain while lifting, but for me it was some kind of sinus / ear pressure issue.  It wouldn't be really noticeable under normal functioning, but once the workload of strength training set in, it would make my head throb.  I'm not a doctor so it's not advice - just my experience. It also reduces cranial pressure when you remember to exhale during the load-bearing portion of the exercise (be it pushing or pulling).  It's especially important during heavy weight training, because eye pressure shoots up if you're holding your breath when you strain to get a weight up.

For me, reducing weight and increasing reps helped - so did aspirin and taking a few days off from lifting.

Thank you for the response Bert.

I'm going to call him and talk to him about it. I don't get headaches, that's what scared me. It could be that I wasn't breathing enough, but I had "just" started the work out, only into my second set.

Thank you for the advice.

Re: [fast5] What just happened???

Sudden headaches with weight lifting could be something bad ... like a blood clot or minor blood vessel break ... or high blood pressure? ... so yeah, check it out!

The only headaches I've gotten from dietary changes though, are migraines. In that case the blood vessels in the brain expand, and yes, shaking my head hurts. I stopped getting migraines when I stopped eating dairy, which seems to be the trigger for me. Migraines usually involve visual changes too though.

I would tend to get migraines when my fat levels went down. I think this is because fat stores various toxins and hormones etc., and as the fat breaks down it releases whatever it is into the blood. This is becoming a big problem for orcas ... when they lose weight dioxin gets into their blood and makes them ill. Good reason to drink plenty of liquid while losing fat.

Speaking of which, dehydration can cause headaches too, and sudden dizziness.

If it IS an expanded blood vessel thing similar to a migraine, a cup of coffee usually helps, or chocolate. If it's just plain dehydration, good ol' lemon juice or vinegar in water.

Re: [fast5] What just happened???

Travis,

A sudden headache isn't normal, with or without Fast-5. There are numerous causes of headaches, mainly muscular and vascular, both of which could precipitated by straining.

The only person who could or should help you sort this out is your doctor, who can do or order any tests needed to gather more information.

Since this was precipitated by a return to exercise and went away, it's most likely muscular, but it's not the kind of thing you can sort out online. I'm glad it's back to normal but I hope you'll consider a check with your doctor.

I immediately stood up and walked and it all went away in about 30 seconds and I was back to normal. My head was a little sore still when I would shake it from side to side... the same way it feels when I have a normal headache and the faintness passed as well.

I was freaked out. After a couple of minutes of feeling fine, I started on my next exercise and as I started pulling the weight I could feel the pressure in my head again and I just stopped. I did about 10 minutes of cardio afterwards and decided to just stop until I can figure out "what just happened."

I have not done any research on these symptoms just yet, I wanted to run it by you guys and see if anyone has had this happen to them before?

Thanks!!!

Travis

Re: [fast5] What just happened???

Travis, I am just curious, what is your height and weight? Also, have you been doing these exercises regularly, and for how long?

Today was strength training. First I stretched out, then my first routine was chest machine... I was pressing 110 lbs, was going to do 2 sets of 10. The first set was completely easy. Re: [fast5] losing weight again

I started F-5 last December to May and stuck strictly to it. I lost 17 lbs, but have maintained 15. I drank a lot of herb tea, ate soups.

I have a theory why as to why the difference ... based a lot on research done by Dr. Johnson on uric acid. What happened is that I started getting gout symptoms (joint pain and a "tophi" on my big toe: also my uric acid tested high on a blood test), and so went on a "low uric acid" diet like my Dad did. This mostly involves swapping a few foods. It's not an insane diet at all, but the food choices aren't obvious, at least to me.

Now mind you when my Dad did this, it held his gout at bay, but he also lost a lot of weight. He wasn't trying to lose weight especially, just stop the pain, so it is interesting. Dr. Johnson's theory is that uric acid puts the body into "hibernation mode" where it wants to store fat and not burn it.

So looking at the various ways of eating I've tried over the decades ... the ones associated with weight loss just happened to be low uric acid diets.

A combo of Fast-5 plus "low uric acid" seems to be doing the trick nicely. My joints do not hurt, and I continue to lose weight. My metabolism is faster (at least my body temps are higher, going from 96-ish to 98-ish). It's also interesting that my siblings all have major weight issues and also major joint issues (one sister calls Advil, "Vitamin A").

I have not retested my uric acid levels yet, but I have lost 30 lbs + and the big red lump on my toe is gone.

I posted my diet as it exists currently here:

As always, it's a work in progress! An "experiment of one" as Dr. Bert would say.

So, long story short: if I were you I'd look at your current food choices and see what is different. Look beyond macro-nutrients (protein/fat/carb) and maybe look at: fish vs. beef, vinegar and other acids, how much water you drink, beer and other yeasty foods, how much sugar and fruit juice, even cocoa powder. Also look at vitamins: Vitamin C is one of those active vitamins that affects uric acid levels.

Then if you note some pattern: share it with everyone else! If we all experiment, we can learn a lot.

Now I'm losing again. Has anyone had the experience of losing after being on Fast5 a while? Or is anyone still losing after being on it for a while? [fast5] Re: losing weight again

Thanks so much Heather for the lengthy reply. I will start being more observant of what I'm eating and drinking and keep everyone posted.

One thing I remembered after posting my last message is that in August, that is towards the end of summer, I have sometimes noticed that I shed lbs without trying. I guess automatically we eat less when the weather is warmer...Maybe that's what's going on. On the other hand this weight loss has been going on for at least a month now, so maybe it's something I'm eating. Another thought is that over the last year or so I've become emotionally / mentally healthier. Maybe as a result I need food less to boost my moods as I did in the past...

Heather,
Is MCT coconut oil? Thanks for the tips on your link. My weight seems to be holding with just a lb or two difference. Not doing F5 everyday. I'm trying to maintain until winter. Winter was a lot easier for me. Lots of herb tea.

Hi I'm new to the group but have been reading it off and on for a few years.

I've been on fast5 for about three years in order to maintain after losing about 6kg (13lbs) on an HCG regimen. I never really lost on Fast5 but at least didn't gain unwanted lbs back. Now I'm losing again. Has anyone had the experience of losing after being on Fast5 a while? Or is anyone still losing after being on it for a while? I can't really imagine going back to the "normal" way of eating; whenever I do, I feel sluggish and heavy. I don't mind the weight loss, but I wonder why it is happening now after such a long time of maintaining.

Thanks for any comments.

[fast5] losing weight again
