Re: [fast5] Is exercise necessary?

There really isn't a lot of data that says "hours" of exercise does much good. For building muscle, a few repetitions of intense weight actually work very well. In one article I read, the amount of weight to use was the amount where the MOST a person could do was 8 reps. The idea is to stress out the muscle, and the bone, which builds both.

That kind of exercise, is done in 15 minutes. Very fast. And it should be done slowly, which makes it almost zen-like. Doesn't give joint injuries either.

As for aerobic exercise: some types of it aren't very good for you. It can cause joint and other issues. I think it is better to "get moving" with something that you enjoy, and maybe does some good, like gardening.

Also there is the hyper-fast kind of stress out your breathing kinds of exercise, like "spinning". I think that is good for pulmonary function, again, without taking tons of time.

But in terms of "peace of mind" ... it depends WHY exercise gives you that peace. Some of it might be that it helps "burn off" cortisol (I don't recall the exact way it does this, but excess cortisol is one problem people have and exercise counteracts it). Fast-5 does, I think, help regulate cortisol also. So does yoga and meditation.

So yeah, it might help. But of course the way to figure it out is to try it and see!

RE: [fast5] Is exercise necessary?

You could just walk for 30 minutes, outside, not on a treadmill…  truthfully that is about all I do is walk with my dogs, though I had added some other exercises, but health issues have slowed that down.

As for the esoteric question, I suppose it depends on how you approach/interpret the whole fasting thing.  But you can use just about any action humans can make to achieve some sort of peaceful state.  I suspect it all hinges on intention.  Your intentions, your thoughts, and just learning how to relax, then try breathing deeply and slowly till the urge to exercise goes away.

[fast5] Re: shopping

Of the 43 different fruit and vegetable categories tested by the Environmental Working Group and included in their Shoppers' Guide to Pesticides in Produce, these 12 fruits and vegetables had the highest pesticide load, making them the most important to buy or grow organic:

Peaches
Apples
Sweet bell peppers
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Cherries
Lettuce
Grapes (imported)
Pears
Spinach
Potatoes

In contrast, these foods were found to have the lowest residual pesticide load, making them the safest bet among conventionally grown vegetables:

Broccoli
Eggplant
Cabbage
Banana
Kiwi
Asparagus
Sweet peas (frozen)
Mango
Pineapple
Sweet corn (frozen)
Avocado
Onion

So if you need to work within a certain budget, use this information to help guide you to the best choices when it comes to lowering your overall pesticide exposure.

[fast5] Re: shopping

I've been having difficulty getting fruits/veggies into my diet, just because my family never really buys a lot of them. We never have. I just eat normal healthy things, such as granola bars and veggie patties. Great start you're making with the fruits/veggies, though!!
Also, fasting makes me feel powerful, as well. :) I'm not sure what it is, but I really feel a difference.

You'll find the more you live this 'diet', the more your body will actually WANT to keep it up. When I started eating again throughout the day without Fast Five, I literally felt sick. I could definetely feel the difference. Fasting should become a part of everyday life, it's very good for the human body. Good luck on your plan!!

[fast5] Re: newbie

This way of eating surprised me too. I have so much energy. seems like all of a sudden a switch was turned on.

The 5 hour window, I have never eaten after 7pm in the evening, that has always been a habit. As a result, I find I must move my window to about 3pm. And choosing good foods to start at that time really has been huge. Here I am on only the third day of doing this and I feel like I have been swindled by the diet industry!

NO counting calories, no monitoring the scales...just watching how my clothes fit and being very very happy with my general wellbeing.

go for it! I have a embroidery machine that I am going to try to put a Fast 5 logo on some bookmarks. Need to share this success.

And I HAVE MS. I am feeling stronger and my balance seems to be correcting itself. There is a HEALING element to fasting.

Good luck ALL!

[fast5] shopping

Ah, doing our weekly trip to the grocery after church today; my husband was calling out all this "good" stuff to get like pies and breads, etc.
I find fasting is really making me feel "powerful". I said "no" so much it was like a broken record.

I've been eating better quality of food, the vegetables and fruit required by most diets. Thing of it is, I was always a little intimidated with the idea I needed to get 5 to 7 servings of fruit and vegies per day! But with FF, I just make sure I start with vegies or fruit to break the fast, and I tend to choose more wisely too.

As far as avoiding wheat, I think you are right. It does not digest easily in your system and eating it does not help me with the diet.
I find I am more hungry for the "right" stuff. I find "corn" is similar to wheat also. doesn't always digest easily.

So the best fiber sources have to be from vegetables and fruit right?
Doing wonderful on Day 3 after thanksgiving!

I am relatively new at this two.. I think I started about a month ago and snuck up the hours of fasting 15 minutes at I time.  Don’t tell Barnaby, but I am finding that breaking at 2 pm and going to 7pm, usually 6 pm is working fairly good for me..

I have more weight to lose than you and I have been fighting weight for a long time..

One thing I have noticed is that I am feeling better.  I have autoimmune diseases and other chronic illnesses too and I have to say, spending less energy on digestion, leaves more energy for healing.

I am also realizing that the trick is to just get used to being hungry at times.  The stomach is a bit of a nazi when it comes to wanting food or, if you prefer, a two year old throwing a tantrum.  You just have to be tough and say NO!

Good luck and don’t give up.. and if you do screw up like I did the other day.. just continue on.

Oh, I am a firm believer in not eating Wheat, especially if you have chronic illnesses.. so while you at it, consider giving up wheat if you haven’t already done so. Truth be told, with eating so much less there are two many foods to choose from as it is and wheat isn’t very nutritious, and white bread is basically glue..

I am new to this. I got the book and the methodology appealed to me. Actually, it reminded me of a suggestion my dad made when I was in my 20's. He told me when he needed to lose a bit he would just have his cup of coffee in the morning and then eat only at night. He has always been a "fan" of fasting and it has helped him maintain a good weight for many years. He is now 85.

Frankly, I was looking for something that will keep me thin for the rest of my life. I have 60 lbs to lose and it seems insurmountable at times.

I have MS. I am not diabetic and do not have prediabetic markers at this time. I do have family, relations that are diabetic and I know that it is up to me to decide to stop this in its tracks.
I am working out with the fast 5 diet and I don't find it hard. I cannot work out for an hour at a time, but 15 minutes here and there.

I'm hopeful. I actually have my husband being supportive of this. We shall see.

Wish me luck. 2nd day after thanksgiving...the fast is cruising.

One of us is psychic.. I was thinking the same thing last night.  I have to adjust my food buying and I need a separate freezer for my dog’s food.  Right now their food takes up most of it.

I am lucky in that very little is going bad.

One other thing I noticed is that deciding what to eat is becoming more important as I really want and need it to be as nutrient dense as possible.

But I am still loosing weight.  Since day 1 to now… maybe four weeks and at first it was more fast 8…  I have lost 9 lbs.

I am eating much less on Fast 5. I could take Barnably's advice more often and skip eating for a day, but I worry about the delicious expensive organic food going bad if I don't eat it.

So I just have to train myself to buy less! My freezer is full; I just crammed something else in there I probably won't eat for a while....

There will probably be a lot of leftovers at Thanksgiving also! Ahhh!

[fast5] Re: I buy too much food.

Buy fatty meat, and treat everything else such as fruit and vegetables like a dessert (rare treat). I've done the same as you, buying more fresh vegetables or fruit than keeps, so changed habit to not necessarily eat such a variety. After all, it's the Government who says you should have 5 servings a day (fruits & veggies). And I now believe practically nothing they say! In fact, if I believe the Opposite...I'm probably on the mark.

RE: [Bulk] [fast5] Could fast 5 not be for me?

Have you ever been checked for low blood sugar?  Or, if you can afford a blood glucose meter and strips, test your blood in the am and just before you start eating and then before bed and any other time you are having symptoms.

Wal-Mart sells a meter for around 10 bucks and you can get their brand name strips fairly cheap.

I used to have the same problem, which is why I never tried this.  I would get so shaky.  Even now, I have bad days where I have to break early, but I try to at least make it to 3 pm.

The other thought I have is that your body hasn’t started burning fat yet, it just stubborn.  Maybe do the Atkins induction diet for a week or two [protein and fat only] without fast 5 and then start with fast 5 for a week with Atkins, then go back to Paleo with fast 5.

This way you can eat all day while your body starts dipping into your fat stores.

So to sum up:

Think hypoglycemia     Test blood  / Or

One week eat all day Protein and fat only

One week Fast 5 with protein and fat only

Then, around week 3 fast 5 and paleo

I tried fast 5 a year ago, and couldn't do it. I would get crazy hungry,
drink a bunch of water to reduce the hunger, then spend the rest of the
day peeing clear and having headaches. I think I was washing out my
electrolytes with all that water.

Two weeks ago I tried again. I drink a lot less water to stave off my
hunger. This time my problem is extreme weakness, which is solved when I
eat. I don't have this problem everyday, but I do some days. I'm
perplexed, because I eat a paleo diet, so it's not too many carbs. I eat
a lot of fat and protein and low sugar/ starch veggies. I feel like I'm
eating heartily and very well...

Perhaps my body needs more time to get used to the fasting? Or maybe
it's just not good for everyone?

I suppose it's hard to know what is going on, without knowing *exactly*
what I eat, and how my health is.

I can give one example: Sunday my window was 3p to 8p. I ate a quiche
with salmon, veg soup made with homemade gelatinous broth, nuts, crab
meat, dates.

Monday, the hunger was astronomical. I opened my window at 3p with 1½
cups crab meat. I felt soooo tired. I wanted to wait to eat dinner with
my friend for the rest of my food. By 6p I was shaking and felt I was
going to faint. I finally ate at 645p and felt great after that.

I don't want to spend my days starving and tired... this happens more
often than not. Today I'm feeling hungry and energy is getting low.

Any ideas?

[fast5] Re: Energy and Other Effects of Fasting

I generally run my errands in the late afternoon, so I guess it'd be anywhere from the 16-19 hour period. That's not to say I wouldn't feel it earlier, I just always have to be at a desk at that time.

There have been periods of my life where I was significantly fitter than I am today. I ran regularly and lifted, though I hated every pavement-pounding stride and never understood that "runner's high" folks spoke of.

Not eating is awesome. :D

Hi,

I am in total agreement, my energy is through the roof and I think clearer, as well. I am more confident, as I feel 100% better and this spills over into all areas of my life. Who would have thought that gaining control over food and your intake could cause such a positive effect in your life. I am fitting into some of my old pants that I could not wear last year. There are still a couple pairs that don't fit yet. I have a couple more inches to go....

I have read that fitting into old pants is the best way to test weight loss, that weight can be misleading, but tight pants tell the real story...

I am down to 160 and have a goal of getting my waist a bit smaller. I am wearing size 34 pants and want to get into size 32 as my next goal. I also would like to see more definition in my body makeup (less fat). I lift weights to maintain the muscle.

[fast5] Re: Hot Flashes sure cooled down this List

For the most part my window is 3-8 PM. Often I'm busy at 3 and start late, but I seldom go beyond 8.

That's when I'm not cheating :-)

I've been eating Fast-5 for about 17 months and lost most of my 55 lbs in the first 6 months. I'm male, over 50 and have been kind of stuck around 188 lbs for a few months. While I would like to get down to around 175, I am about at the weight I was when I graduated college; 175 would be close to the weight I was when on a swimming team in high school. So 175 might be overly ambitious. I actually feel pretty good at my current weight and don't really worry if social events (or other goodies) occasionally have me eating outside my window. But I haven't let this become a habit.

I've probably cut out some carbs and have increased protein and fat, I don't ever think plan too much about what I'm eating. But I do usually break my fast with a piece of cheese while preparing the rest of my meal. It seems to get me started on the right foot. Breaking a fast with sweets always leaves me hungry, eating lots of sweets that day and the next and gaining weight.
