Re: [fast5] Re: Diabetic?

Milk thistle is probably not enough.  Consider lowering you carbs, or at least doing just a few PP tests with high carb and lower carb to see what the difference  is.  It is eye opening.

I know the strips are expensive, but if you think about what you will learn and what you could prevent with some very judicious use of  25 -50  strips, it is well worth it.  You only need to test enough to get a sense of your own pattern.   Reading Jenny's site  carefully will give you some ideas.  Then,  you will understand exactly what you are looking for  when you test and not just waste a lot of test strips or get obsessive about testing.

I am on a liver healing supplement. (Milk Thistle, Tumeric) I also have a history of elevated liver enzymes and liver pain somewhat.

Re: [fast5] Re: Diabetic?

So you are just eating anything, carbs, high carbs, very high carbs on Fast 5?  Not testing anything other than fasting?

I don't blame you for not wanting to take and meds if you don't have to.  And most likely, if you monitor your post prandial BS   for a little while to understand which foods raise your BS and then eat accordingly you won't have to.

Heather doesn't eat as low carb as I do and her BS has lowered on Fast 5.  IIRC she doesn't eat much carb, but does eat rice at each meal.  I can't do that.

Everybody is different.  So it is hard to say exactly what is the best path for each person without some testing of Post Prandials.

What Heather is talking about with cortisol levels causing BS to rise is  aslo what I was referring to when i said your liver must heal.  The liver has become insulin resistant and thus messes up the hormonal communication causing release of too much blood sugar.  This is usually the first part of blood sugar regulation to go, unless you have one of the autoimmune types  of D.  Fortunately it is the first to heal.

It is also true that the fasting number is often the last to show problems and the last to lower...

Have you read  Jenny Ruhl?  I would suggest reading everything on her site to get a good idea of what you are dealing with

Ellen, I am not doing anything except fast-5 and trying to lose wieght. My doctor has prescribed Metformin for my Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, and she said it also could stave off diabetes for a while. I do not want to take that stuff, I am scared of it.

Re: [fast5] Diabetic?

What I have found is that sometimes when I am fasting my BG goes UP.
In fact, it goes higher when I'm really hungry, like when I first do
fasting. When I first started fasting it went up to 123 or more, but
was normally 95. But now, fasting, it is 83, which is way better than
95.

Thing is, when you fast, your body produces cortisol to force sugar
into your bloodstream. Sometimes it overshoots, and gets too much
sugar into your blood. If you fast a lot, it gets better at releasing
the right amount. At least that's the theory, and it seems to be true
in my case. In general, the thought about fasting and diabetes is that
over the long run, the fasting can help with Type 2 management, but
the BG numbers might go up in the short run.

There is an interesting theory also that high iron stores are the root
cause of Type 2 diabetes. Donating blood seems to help Type 2. I've
found that avoiding high-iron foods seems to help too, in "metabolic
syndrome" in general (and drinking tea with meals). See:

http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/content/51/4/1000.full

This would fit with "gestational diabetes" because during pregnancy,
the body hoards metals in general (copper too). Also no menstruation.

In the US, the high-iron foods are carb foods with added iron:
fortified breakfast cereals seem to be among the worst offenders.
Anyway, it's an easy thing to experiment with.

Re: [fast5] Diabetic?

What else are you doing about your blood sugar? IMO you will have to be low carb and high fat.  Track your PP for a while to see your patterns and which foods "work" for you and which do not.

I found I had high blood sugars after being on Fast-5 for 6 months .  I was even eating low carb at the time.  It has taken me two years to get my blood sugar to stay below 100. During that time I tried a number of things and was on and off Fast 5 several times, experimenting with various approaches.  Am doing Fast-5  again now and so far blood sugar is still good.  I eat very low carb and high saturated fat and take something called Insulow (R  Alpha Lipoic Acid and Evening Primrose Oil).  Everybody is different, so you will just have to experiment and also understand that healing your liver, which is usually the problem in early blood sugar dysregulation, takes some time.

I started a yahoo group  for this issue

[fast5] Re: Long term on Fast 5

Hey there!

I have been living the fast-5 life since October 2005. If you look back to the very beginning of this group, you will see my posts. I am fast-5 going strong!!! I lost 25 lbs originally and have maintained my current weight for 4 years. This is the only way to live for me. I highly recommend it to anyone who is tired of living their life around food and meal times. My life and time are so free! I have worn the same size for 4 years. I have never in my life been able to do that!

So, yeah, it is a very good thing.

Re: [fast5] Re: The new TV clip on Fast-5

Hi Bert

Having just watched the clip from your link, I agree (from a UK perspective) that the coverage was reasonably balanced by typical US popular media standards.  Nevertheless, I didn't feel it would give a previously uninformed viewer a very clear view of what Fast-5 is really about.  For example, the presentation seemed to major on one's being able to eat "anything", even "junk" - although mentioning, somewhat in passing, that you personally recommend "healthy" eating.  Surely the point is rather to separate out two distinct - and distinctly controversial -  strands: i.e. the pragmatics of moderating calorie consumption (focused on weight control); and nutritional content (focused on optimal health).  Fast-5 chooses to major primarily on the first strand, but is broadly agnostic on the second, the take-home point being that it can thus accommodate a range of nutritional approaches in a mutually supportive, not exclusive, way.

The other aspect that seemed to me particularly to jar was the idea of Fast-5 as a "diet", rather than a lifestyle (although again this was mentioned in passing).  This leaves it open to standard criticisms of "yo-yo" rebound effects when the dieter resumes their previous patterns of consumption.  Also, if people approach it in this way, they are unlikely to have time to adapt significantly and hence benefit from the long-term positive, as opposed to suffering the short-term transitional, effects.

As you say, what many dietitians say seems to have become a self-reinforcing closed loop, which probably necessitates going around them, rather than through them.  I followed the link to the ADA site and was frankly nonplussed.  The Coca-Cola Company???  Pepsi???  What possible unbiased motivation can such corporations have towards eating "right"?  Whereas their interest in getting people to consume more is straightforwardly obvious.  I must say that I hadn't given much conscious consideration previously to the potential impact of a "moderating" approach such as Fast-5 on corporate profits, but on reflection such advice is enough to strike fear into the heart of any business executive; as indeed is any intervention aimed at moderating consumerism more generally.  Perhaps what's been "good for General Motors" (or Coke) isn't turning out so good for America after all.

Anyway, it must be true that if the coverage leads viewers to your book, and this forum, much good may still result.

Keep up the good work!

David

I think I've mentioned this here before, but the corporate sponsors of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) may have inappropriate influence over the ADA's advice, and may be the reason the ADA insists people "eat right" (their website is eatright.org) rather than "eat less." Re: [fast5] Re: Long term on Fast 5

I've lost a whopping 90 pounds in less than 7 months.  I limit calories to 1100 per day, eating all of them for lunch followed by 23 hours of fasting.  Works for me.

Re: [fast5] Long term on Fast 5

I've been doing Fast-5 for a while. Can't recall quite how long....
between 6 months and a year. And I looooovvvveeee it! I tried for years
to lose the 5 lbs I had gained after childbirth. True, it wasn't much.
But it bothered me. And so did the constant fatigue after eating. And
always wondering what to eat.

For the last long while (at least 6 months, probably a lot more), I've
had a gorgeous svelte body, much less fatigue with eating, and am saving
a bundle on grocery bills. I absolutely love it, and am so grateful!

Re: [fast5] Re: New here!

My favorite thing about fasting in general thus far is this:

I am a PICKY either. CRAZY PICKY. (So picky I bug myself!) I was pretty intolerant of veges in general. (I liked a FEW.) I tried forcing myself to eat more - but frankly forcing yourself to eat something doesn't last. I started fasting using Eat Stop Eat. I noticed that after a fast day I could not only tolerate but ENJOY these foods that made me green before. My most recent success - a bite of a "Bloomin Onion" - I do NOT eat onions. In fact they usually send me running to the bathroom. (the texture literally makes me throw up.) But yesterday I ate some onion! AND I kept it down! This is just my "biggest" success - I have started ENJOYING raw veggies and salads! (My husband is floored.) I make sure to eat whatever I am trying to like to break my fast. It's amazing the difference in taste when your actually hungry!

Even if I didn't lose another pound I am so happy with this I would keep at it.

[fast5] Re: New here!

Hi, Carolyn!

I had about 43 pounds to lose when I started on January 1 and I've lost 26 of them so far. I agree with you about eating creating cravings. One of the best things about this way of eating for me has been how satisfied (and energized) I've been while I'm not eating, and how great everything tastes when I do!

I have been careful about what I eat when I open my window--I think we have such an opportunity with this program to get full fast and not eat so much, and I encourage you to take advantage of that! I don't use the full window myself. When I'm finished with my evening meal, I don't eat anything else, so I probably fast about 22 hours each day.

I hope this is helpful. I know everybody does this a little differently, and I'm sure you'll figure out what works for you. Just don't give up. It really is remarkable and it really does work. I'm in it for life.

Good luck!

Re: [fast5] Re: Desserts

Here's one more for your Wally.

I have been hungry all my life.  Ate all day long.  Full healthy meals and continuous snacking in between.  Many many years ago I went to OA for a while.  So I understand that feeling of insatiable hunger.  There well may be an emotional component, but from my vantage point (I am in my 60's), unless you sort out your metabolic problems you won't become clear about the emotional aspects, and sorting out the food will in and of itself resolve many of the emotional components.  Here are some things that have helped me:

Paying careful attention to carb in take of any kind and relation to hunger.  Less carb = less hunger.

Increase saturated fats and pay attention.  For me more fat - less hunger.

Not eating grains.  I found that they gave me arthritis so I stopped eating them.  I then discovered that not eating them also helped with the hunger and cravings.

Not eating dairy except ghee.  Makes me agitated and moody and hungry.

Learning about blood sugar (Read all of http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php  ). Getting a glucometer and doing my own testing. This helped me sort out which foods affected my blood sugar, which definitely contributes to that "Must eat now" feeling.  This is not simple.  some people find that too much protein can cause hunger, others it may be fruit.  There is no one simple answer.  But combing a little bit of home testing with paying attention to your carb intake and its effect on your hunger should be a big help.

I would definitely advise you to drop the fruit juice ( and probably all fruit)  That is pure sugar and if you have a metabolic problem, which you obviously do, there is no way you can handle it.  Even "normal" people would do well not to have juice or at the very least have it only with a full meal containing protein and lots of good satiating saturated fat.

Experiment with your window.  I did FF successfully for years with a 5 -6 hour window.  Lost the weight I needed to lose, and maintained that loss even when going back to 3 meals a day.  Then  when I learned I had blood sugar dysregulation and trying to bring my blood sugar to a tight range below 100 all day long, I somehow gained about 12 pounds.  I was successful in getting my blood sugar down.  What I did was just eat as much fat at each meal as I could possibly consume   plus take and insulin sensitizer. (This was on 3 meals a day

So now my blood sugar has been good for months, I still eat high fat , but not as much, still take the insuling sensitzer.  But wanting to lose those 12 pounds I went back on my once successful two meals in a five hour window to lose the weight.  Nothing happened.  Then I finally tried a shorter window and not only is the weight coming off, but I find I have even better appetite control than I did with my old FF routine.

It might just be that dropping the juice would be enough, that way your window would only be however long it takes to eat that one meal.  That should make a major change.

Experiment and keep notes.

Whatever the exact cause, I do believe that for those of use afflicted with insatiable cravings for dessert (read carbs), the old AA adage truly applies:  " one drink(taste) is too many, a thousand is not enough".

Wishing you liberation,

Ellen

[fast5] 7 weeks in...

...and 9 pounds gone! Wow! I didn't think I had lost anything this
week - the scale had been stuck all week - but this morning - bam! - 2
pounds had disappeared! I am THRILLED with this WOE! After years of
struggling to lose weight (my whole adult life!), to have found
something this EFFORTLESS is just plain amazing.

I leave Sunday morning for Disney World, my first big test of FF away
from home. I'm not anticipating any problems. I'll check back in when
I return next weekend.
Kathy

[fast5] Is anyone blogging their Fast-5 Experience?

I just started a blog about doing Fast-5 today, in hopes that it will keep me motivated, and that if I'm successful with Fast-5, it can motivate others. Hope it's okay for me to share it here:

http://late-breakfast.blogspot.com

I was wondering if others in this group are blogging about their experiences? It might be nice to have a folder in the links section with those who are doing so.

[fast5] A lot of weight to lose

Somebody posted yesterday that they had lost a lot of weight this way (I think it was either 70 or 90 pounds so far, surely they will speak up too).I noticed it because
I was a bit surprised to see that....

Wallie, are you having the apple juice at 9? if so, you are keeping it within your 5-hour window.

Re: [fast5] Digest Number 1141

Hi Wallie,

I spent a lot of time in 12-step Overeater's Anonymous (i've had
Eating Disorder issues), and there are very good things I got out of
it, and there are also BAD things I got out of it. I think it's very
NOT-HELPFUL to have a Negative Mantra, i.e. saying over & over "I am a
binge-eater", "I am an addict," "I am a sugar-addict," et cetera. It
is ONE thing to recognize such things to come out of Denial; it is
another thing entirely to REPEAT such negative beliefs about oneself
over and over until they become one's IDENTITY. I highly recommend
cultivating POSITIVE beliefs about yourself, such as, "I am doing the
best I can," "I am doing the best I can to love myself and take care
of my body," "I am cultivating a healthy relationship with food," "I
enjoy food in a healthy life-affirming way," and other such
Affirmations.

Personally, in terms of dessert, it has been part of my HEALING (yes)
to consciously give myself permission to enjoy desserts. I also
subscribe to the modality that HEALTHY NUTRITIONAL FATS (virgin
pressed oils, for example) are incredibly beneficial to have as a
staple in one's diet.
