My two cents and from my experiece, when I first starting F5ing April 2007, Diet Pepsi helped me big time keep those hunger pangs under control.
I used to drink an average of 3-5 cans of diet soda until my window opens, the fuzziness of the soda along with the icy temprature of it, I felt made my stomach shrink and i was like never hungry.
I lost all of the weight that I wanted.
However, since I've given birth last March, I gained some of the weight back, and the diet pepsi ain't helping at all. The scales just never seem to budge. It's as if the DP is making me gain weight.
Dunno what went wrong.

To my understanding as long as the drinks have no calories it's ok, BUT I have also heard that for some people the diet drinks cause a spike in insulin even without the sugar, so it can cause you to be more hungry/crave. I don't have that problem so I drink them here and there.
