[fast5] Re: Exercise and Fast 5...

Hi RuthR - thanks for the post. Gratz on the loss! I can't agree more with everything you wrote. WOW I feel fantastic. The amount of energy I have is off the chart :). I'm not obsessed by food and I really look forward to getting out with the dog. Problem is, now he's having a hard time keeping up...lol. I'm hoping to get back to the gym next week (dependant on the weather cause it's over an hour powerwalk/jog home and the weather is averaging low-mid 30s HOT desert weather. Cringe to think when summer really hits). So yeah, doing great. Good news for my first week - 5lb loss. 5 down, 40 something to go!

Re: [fast5] Daily headaches since fast-5ing... ideas?

The headaches I think usually relate to cortisol. Your body
cranks it out when you don't eat, to cause stored glycogen
to go into the blood. Sometimes the body overshoots and
releases too much cortisol, which causes symptoms
that people believe are "low blood sugar". I always did. But
then I bought a glucometer and guess what? When I was
shaky and headachy, my BG was *high*. The rest of the time
it was normal.

Sweets, for some people, do tend to get the BG out of
control and cause a rebound. They can also change
bacterial growth in the gut which causes it's own problems.
Only solution I know of is to experiment. Keep a journal
and see what works!

For me what works is to break my fast with something
high in protein, esp. fish or eggs. If I eat sweets or
straight starches, I eat them with konjac, which slows
down their assimilation so they act less like pure sugar
and don't cause that hunger rebound (or gut problems,
for me). Also I try to get plenty of water, and I take
fish oil for Omega-3's.

Re: [fast5] optimal diet?

Try, instead, eating a Low Carb High Fat diet.  You still eat veggies...no potatoes or grains. See if that won't work for you.

Here are some links for you to investigate what this diet approach is about:

[fast5] Daily headaches since fast-5ing... ideas?

I've been fast-5ing for about 5 weeks. I am not doing it to lose weight
(I'm at my ideal weight), but for more energy. And it really works! My
window is about 230p to 730p. Sometimes later.

The only problem is I'm getting headaches before my window opens. And I
admit that I often don't start at 230p, because amazingly, I'm not
hungry!

Is it low blood sugar? My friend thinks it's because I'm eating too many
sweets. I do have some sweets at night sometimes...

I would love to hear any ideas!

Re: [fast5] optimal diet?

Personally I do best when I eat more fish and eggs, and fewer
simple carbs, and konjac. But one big point of Fast-5 is that it retrains your
appestat so you crave what you need. Some people really do need
more carbs (esp. if you are running/swimming etc) and some need
more protein (esp. if you are weight-lifting or still growing) and there
are other issues too. It can vary from day to day too. Keeping a food
log can tell you what works for you.

[fast5] Re: Exercise and Fast 5...

You know Deanna, you make a really good point. I had wondered about how well fast-five could work for people who are very lean. But what you said puts it into perspective. If a person has only one pound of fat on them (not possible, but hypothetical) they have access to 3500 calories! That's enough energy for a day or two. If a person like you or myself is maybe five pounds overweight, that's still over a week's worth of potential energy! The more I think about Fast-5 and it's implications I just get really irritated at how people are used to "grow the economy" and spend, spend, spend. It's so insidious.

Thanks Dr Herring, yet again. I think you've given us all a lot more than diet to think about.

Thanks for the info Deanna. I am fine not eating when I get up (never really was an early morning brekky person). I actually seem to function better without breakfast. I never eat before working out. My problem is after I exercise, I get home starving. I guess it's something I'm gonna have to adjust to. Will keep you all updated. :)

PS...You seem packed full of activity. Wish I had half your energy! :)

I swim in the morning and my window is 1-6pm.. at the beggining I felt very hungry right after the practice because I used to drink a protein shake and I missed it very much, but after some days it´s ok to drink the shake 3 hrs after the practice when my window opens.. maybe you'll be ok after some days of ajustment...

I exercise in the fasted state before 1pm most days.  It doesn't matter if I work out in the morning or mid day.  But then again, I have been a very active individual for 2/3 of my life.  I am a 1st Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo, lift weights, play racquetball and otherwise play whenever I can.  Once in a great while I will feel the need for food before a workout, in which case I may eat some jerky or other light snack.  Also, I eat a very low carb diet - generally under 30 gm/day.  My body has plenty of fat fuel stores with which to use (although I am only about 5 lbs overweight).  The idea that we must always eat something before exercise is a myth, at least for me.  My window is also between about 2 - 7pm.

Best wishes to you.  I think you will gradually adjust.

RE: [fast5] Exercise and Fast 5...

Hi Ms Brown.

Until recently, I worked out (hard/intensely) fasted for well over 7-8
months with no problems.

But, I will say I had to work up to that degree of success.

When I started Fast5 a year ago and was lifting, I was crashing during my
lifts. Sleepy, couldn't get power under my lifts, etc.

This year/summer, I was making sure that I was fueling my body up with the
good stuff so that when I went in to my work out, I had plenty of power.

I'm not sure whether to tell you to not push so hard during your first work
out fasted or to just see how it goes... <g>

^shrug^ you'll just have to see how it goes for you.

I don't know my calorie intake, but I typically eat what I want. I make a
point of starting with a small meal, not snacks or sweets. Otherwise, I
don't worry much about what I am eating. But I virtually never eat outside
my eating window (3 - 8 PM). The only 2 times I have in the last 10 weeks
it was a big early morning breakfast and it took almost a week to get back
where I was.

I have a beer if I want (once or twice a week normally) and an occasional
glass of wine.

I started 10 weeks ago and I'm down 17 lbs. That's better than 1.5 lbs per
week and I weigh less than I have in about 10 years or so (211). But I am a
52 year old, 5'10" man who would like to loose another 36 lbs so I sure hope
50 is doable!

[fast5] Exercise and Fast 5...

I have decided to make my window between 2-7pm. The problem is, I usually exercise in the morning after the kids have gone to school and before it gets too hot to walk the dog. When I get home (sometime around 10am) I'm usually starving and will have something to eat. This morning is my first day on F5 and because I can't eat yet I've gulped down nearly a litre of water. My usual intake is around 2 litres a day. I don't have a problem drinking so much water, since I am a water junkie BUT is it ok to workout and not eat? How does everyone else do with morning exercise?

[fast5] Re: Help!!!!

I don't know my calorie intake, but I typically eat what I want. I make a point of starting with a small meal, not snacks or sweets. Otherwise, I don't worry much about what I am eating. But I virtually never eat outside my eating window (3 - 8 PM). The only 2 times I have in the last 10 weeks it was a big early morning breakfast and it took almost a week to get back where I was.

I have a beer if I want (once or twice a week normally) and an occasional glass of wine.

I started 10 weeks ago and I'm down 17 lbs. That's better than 1.5 lbs per week and I weigh less than I have in about 10 years or so (211). But I am a 52 year old, 5'10" man who would like to loose another 36 lbs so I sure hope 50 is doable!

Agreed - Dr. Herring even recommends 'working up' to a full 19 hour window for folks that initially have a challenge with it.

Look, I've gotta say this too -- I appreciate the way Jessica put "cheating" in parentheses, because seriously - to me this is not a diet! Your diet is made up of what you eat; this is all about approaching your diet in a different way.

If you have a day where you don't make your 19 hour window, and then you beat yourself up about 'failing' or 'falling off the wagon,' so to speak, then you're completely missing the point.  Following a plan like this, at least for me, provides a primary benefit about not having to spend all day thinking about what you can and can't consume.  Of course I'm speaking to folks that don't have other dietary issues or physical issues other than excess weight.  The benefits come by consistent application and by paying attention to your body. Perfection comes after you die, and not before, so just aim for 'constantly improving.'  :-)

If you're starting this plan to lose fat, here are some tidbits of advice that I'd provide:

  • Stop thinking about losing weight -- think in terms of losing fat.  Don't throw the scale away but don't look at it as gospel either.  You can celebrate losing two pounds and have it just be water; at the same time you can beat yourself up if the scale didn't move, but you've actually lost fat.  Concentrate on how you look and how you feel.
  • Baby steps!  Consider the idea that you can tweak your food choices after you've settled into the plan.  Think of all the times you threw yourself into a 'diet' religiously only to make it short-term.  Structured diets are almost always short-term.  That's why there's always room for someone else to take your money with a new 'diet revolution.'
  • Clarify your goals, and learn to reset them based on how you look and feel.  When I was over 400, my goal was to get under 300. When I was 300, I aimed for 250.  I started Fast5 when I was around 230.  Now I'm at 210 and have added 10-20 pounds of muscle over the last three years (I'm 6'4").  I've already surpassed any goal I ever placed on myself physically, and there's room for improvement.  I'd like to lose another 15 pounds of fat and add some more muscle. At 42, it's just a matter of saying "hmm. . .how good can I get?"  And yes, I still eat cookies, ice cream, fried food, chocolate, etc - just not every day (although once in a while I'll eat them all at once, just like the next guy!).
  • Don't be afraid to modify your window based on the fact that you actually have a life.  Got a lunch meeting that happens three hours before your window arrives? Simple -- stretch your fast the next day until you're back to your normal window.  Holiday breakfast with lots of potential calories?  Eat light the day before and cut your window back.  It's not difficult, but you might notice that old fears crop up after all the other diets you tried and failed.
  • Aim for 19 hours every day. Put a check-mark on the calendar every time you score, a circle every time you get over 15 hours, and a big X every time you said "ahh, screw it!"  My guess is that you'll get to where you want to be if you can keep the X's down to two or three each month.  Maybe more if you're a hard exerciser!
  • While I'm on my rant (laughing), don't operate out of fear or self-hate, because if you do, make no mistake: you will validate your feelings by failing.  Take back your self-view if you've allowed others to create the belief that you're less than wonderful. Getting healthy must include your self-perception.  Think of this or any other program as a way to show affection to yourself, not as a form of self-loathing.
  • Drink a lot of water.
  • Smile a lot.

Good luck to everyone!

Phil

Just a different perspective. .. I usually subscribe to this method when
trying new things. But they invariably are too difficult, I can't
comply, I fail and then give up.

So with fast-5 I let myself take it easy. I definitely 'cheated' at
first... baby steps. And every day I got closer to my goal of a 5 hour
eating window. Now it has been 4 weeks and it is sooo easy to do the 5
hour window because my body is used to it. And I got here much more
easily than if I were to not 'cheat'.

So choose your method depending on your personality.

Re: [fast5] Kidneys

It is permissible to drink water and tea (unsweetened, or, Stevia sweetened, for example) in the non-fasting periods.  This would keep your kidney's in good order.  Namaste!  Pamela

RE: [fast5] Update #2 :)

:D yea I used to hate being hungry! It made me cheat on all diets, its so weird I actually love the feeling of hunger now! Its like a good sensation to have and I enjoy my food alot more, I feel really alive! 7 pounds isn't alot but its something, lol if you pick up one of those packs of 4 sticks of butter its a pound, pick up 7 of those and suddenly my weight loss feels significant :D  I was eating half fruit and veg for all my food but I think I'm going to bump it up to 2/3 of all my food because I feel so good eating it and love all the different flavors. My father brought home a large chocolate milkshake with sprinkles (one of my old favorites)  he did it to be nice and I could only drink a few sips before I felt like I was going to get sick, it was sickeningly sweet and I can't imagine drinking that whole thing ever again! haha! its sitting in my freezer lol! I love feeling this good! I'm glad you're doing great too! Keep it up! :D

Great news, Jess!

I had some blood work done today. When my doc was setting it up yesterday,
he was warning me that I'd have to 'fast'... 8 for one test, 12 for another
test.

Bring it on, says i....!

That is what I love most about having learned about intermittent fasting; I
can fast and know I'm not going to die!

It is great!

its been twenty days now since I started dieting, I weighed in at 348
pounds. Yay! another 4 pounds in 10 days! My total weight lost is 7
pounds... only 173 more pounds to go lol. I feel good, I'm very happy with
how I've been feeling, eating alot of fruit and vegetables. I can tolerate
the sensation of hunger now more easily :) good luck everyone!

Re: [fast5] Help!!!!

I think its possible! In 20 days I've lost 7 pounds and its alot easier to cope with being hungry and cravings, it wasn't easy at first though so don't give up! Commit yourself to 15 days or something and don't cheat no matter how bad or good you feel. Also I did no exercise to lose the weight but am active at my job, I'm sure you're pretty active too with your new baby, congratulations! Just take it easy, enjoy yourself, don't stress about what you eat too much, whatever you eat enjoy it! I'm currently eating about half my food or more is fruits and vegetables by volume not calories, I don't like to count calories because I love to cook at home and its almost impossible to figure out calories when you make a dish from scratch haha, when I make my plate of food I make sure half is fruit or veggie and I eat them first in case I get too full to finish my plate, I'm thinking of bumping my fruit/veg intake to 2/3 of everything I eat because I love the way they make me feel, I feel so alive and healthy! I wish you luck on your weight loss, and don't give up! Even if you have a slip up just start again and don't worry, you have only failed when you have given up trying :)

Also, Can some one please give me an example of what your calorie intake is in your window and does it matter if you drink wine or beer?

And last but not least is it possable to loose 50pounds on this diet???

Re: [fast5] Help!!!!

My 'kids' are now young adults but on Fast5, I'm way below what I was when I fell pregnant, never mind what I gained. I've no idea what my calories are, I've never checked, but on Fast5, I think they just naturally cut down.

It's certainly not a fad, I've been on it for about 20 months now, lost 80 pounds overall and, although I don't want to lose any more weight, I intend to continue with it.

Good luck
Kirsteen

RE: [fast5] Help!!!!

Hi There!

Have you read the e-book?

I can hear that you are desparate for something that will work for you.

I don't feel this is a 'fad'; many people here live this way.

We have a member that, I believe, has lost 100 pounds using Fast5.

Scan previous posts and look for subject lines entitled: update or latest
report or something like that.

Re: [fast5] Help!!!!

Just want to add that it took me 2 years to lose my baby weight. I was
120 before baby, 170 when I gave birth, and hovered at 135 for a looong
time... 2 years. My baby is now 3.5y and I'm back to 120.

RE: [fast5] Wow

i have been eating high fat for about 2 months, so i'm sure it is the fat you are getting that is helping you to feel satisfied.

keep that number high (and of the good fats) and you'll be doing fine, i bet!

Yes Karen, that's the experiment I described - since Tuesday of last week that's all I've been eating.  Until today, that is: today I have had some roast beef too.

Karen

no, I'm not tracking, but I have a pretty good idea: 8 eggs, and about 2 oz. of fat.  Could be 1.5 or 2.5 oz. of fat - not sure!  But in that region.

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

I'm conducting an experiment on myself.  This past week (completed tomorrow) I have eaten nothing but eggs (protein) and fats.  I did this because I was/am desperate to shift some weight, but the unexpected result was that I have, for the first time, experienced absolutely NO hunger whatsoever!

I always ate low-ish carb, never any sugars / grains / starches, but I would normally eat my vegetables and quite a lot of them, in salads as well as cooked.  Adding up to perhaps 80-100g of carbs per day.  Now, this past week, I've eaten about 8 eggs per day and as much fat as I wanted, i.e. butter or coconut oil for scrambling eggs, mayo on hardboiled eggs.  I'm getting tired of eggs and will probably allow for other proteins next week, but the way I feel as I do this is nothing short of a revelation.

Now I don't think I can (or want to) do this forever, it's probably not too healthy, but it's not going to kill me to carry on for another month or so.  I'd love to feel like this forever.  But I'll probably start adding in a salad per day, perhaps come November.  For the moment, I just love this freedom... no hunger, ever!  Granted, the food is less than exciting, but the point for me right now is that I'm finally losing weight and that my 19-hour fasting window couldn't be better: I never even think about food.  I could carry on fasting much longer, it feels like - and I never felt that way.

Awesome!
B
