Re: [fast5] Re: seeking guidance for Fast-5 beyond 3 weeks...

Being a vegetarian might be an issue ... protein, esp. whole protein, is one of the "satiators" for human beings. Vegies are great things, and they fill one up, but they don't stick around. Vegies and fruits are mostly low fat too. Few of the vegie fats are really "good" fats: coconut oil is probably the best though.

If you have ethical considerations about eating meat, you might consider fish and/or eggs. The healthiest people s on earth tend to be fish and egg eaters (like the Japanese) and they can be very satisfying, esp. the fatty fish. The problem with a pure vegetarian diet is that the protein foods are mainly from soy and wheat gluten, both of which are kind of iffy from a nutrition point of view.

Beyond that, a lot of your struggle appears to be psychological: "feeling confined". Part of the answer to that is to realize that for the time you don't eat, you are also *free from* the need to find food, cook it, clean up. You get time back. And you are free to eat what you want in your time window.

Another answer is to find the foods that your body really *wants*. Find the things that you regard as special ... not special as in "a piece of cake" (which is really indulging a craving for sweets), but something savory that you really enjoy. For me that is often a nice soup or smoked salmon, or a big bowl of prickly pears.

And do make sure the meal has enough protein and fat. Combining Fast-5 with conscious calorie-restriction hasn't worked very well for many people. Eating salad/protein etc. in a course before the starch course works better to avoid over-indulging. Having some vinegar on the salad helps a lot too (or hot lemon tea), and I've found konjac to work well too. For starches, I think it helps your appestat if the starches are not finely-ground (i.e. steamed rice, not pastries) and sometimes if they are whole (like quinoa or millet: some whole grains are irritating though). Wheat gluten is kind of weird when it comes to the gut and appestat and is worth avoiding IMO.

So eating low carb has helped you stay satisfied throughout the 19 hour period? That's my main struggle right now, I'm starving the next day and its been 5 weeks. But I'm recently a new vegetarian so I find myself eating carbs all through my 5 hour window. What should I be eating?

Linda

I wish I could be an encouragement to you.

I am not on a calorie limiting diet at the moment.

In fact, eating high fat, I'm probably consuming 1700-1800 cals/day.

Now, I'm real close to my maintenance weight.

My main goal now is to control blood sugar.

But to not be hungry all day or gorge during my eating window is also very
important to me.

I am getting leaner all the time.

I'm talking, 70-80% of my calories are coming from good fat sources: egg
yolks, coconut oil, avocados, butter, heavy cream....

I don't have a problem with resentment of the "restriction," but I will say
that after 3 weeks I stopped losing weight. I'm still on the FF program,
but am on a severe plateau, despite limiting intake to 1400 calories per
day, always within my time window. I'm going to give it 2 more weeks, but
I'm losing faith.
