Yes, I do mean fat pounds! I got a Tanita for a not too outrageous price off the internet a couple of years back, because I wanted to monitor what various weight fluctuations might mean in terms of body composition. However accurate or otherwise in absolute terms this type of bio-impedance scale may be, they appear to be pretty consistent between readings, and consequently one can see how the measure of "non-fat body mass" fares against the assessment of fat % over time. I plot the changes in a spreadsheet (I'm a geek!) and this confirms that the measured weight loss consistently comes from the fat, not the muscle or bone, department. My guess is that exercising for at least muscle maintenance is probably quite important to muscle-sparing during weight loss, as is not overdoing the daily calorie deficit (it's not a race). The body seems to respond rather admirably to the cues you give it, so subtly suggesting "I'm using this muscle, if you don't mind, please hang on to it" is possibly a good idea!

Do you have a Tanita? You seem really familiar with body-building so I'm assuming you mean fat-pounds, not just any ol' pounds? My athletic daughter is VERY heavy for a girl, but it's all muscle. She gets a kick out of those "guess your weight" booths.

Thanks very much for your detailed reply, Heather. I was worried that something wonky was going on. I'm relieved that others have experienced these things, also. Even though I don't have that much weight to lose (maybe 10 lbs.), I'm feeling so good from fasting every day I don't want to stop unless I'm forced to. There are plenty of IF options, but I love the convenience of Fast-5. I'll just have to eat more at night and see how it goes.
