Yes, I have noticed it's catching on with the middle-age folks too. I think there is a reason, which us in the meat-eating community have ignored: some people DO feel better when they stop eating meat, and they kind of extrapolate that to not eating any kind of animal protein.

My Dad was one example. It turned out, in his 50's, that he had gout. So, he either had to take gout medication, or stop eating meat. But he also noticed that milk made him feel ill too. So he just went "vegetarian", which also seemed kinder to the universe. Which made him feel better in the short run, so he kept at it. Unfortunately, he replaced the meat with purified wheat gluten, and didn't realize he was also gluten intolerant, and that eventually gave him much worse problems.

Then my nephew decided beef was bad because of mad cow disease (which is pretty near non-existent in the US, but he got the idea in his head). So he switched to pork ribs and chicken ... and lost 60 lbs!

That got me thinking that for some people at least, some kinds of meat are not all that great. The issue with "saturated fat" is the one people on both sides of the issue keep talking about, but I don't think that is the problem. I think the problem has to do with iron absorption, the kinds of proteins, sialic acid, and maybe other stuff. But if we don't identify the problems (which are real) then people will keep throwing the baby out with the bathwater and go vegan, which I don't think is healthy either.

That said, the vegan chefs are coming up with some outstanding casein-free recipes! The local gluten-free bakery is also vegan, which is great because milk gives me migraines.
