Fast-5 works for me. I really started 9 Aug at 228.5 lbs, but I was 233.5 the week before. Today I weighed in at 209.
It is still over a lb per week average for 18 weeks. I am sort of stuck though: for 4 weeks I have been between 206.5 and 211.5 lbs. But I have plateaued before and I am pretty happy with the results and how I feel, so it must be OK.
I weigh myself every day and gain weight each time I eat outside my window. Even if it's only 15-30 minutes and even if I don't overeat. But it usually comes right back off. So don't get discouraged if you gained weight during the Thanksgiving feast like I did!
Last week I ate outside my window for about 4 days and gained 4 lbs. I did overeat on Thanksgiving. (And the day after.) Both amount and the deserts. Been back on track since Monday and I have already lost 2 of those lbs.
Normally, I eat pretty much what I want between 3PM and 8PM. It works well for me. 3 o'clock seems like just a late lunch. Often I am hungry about 1:30 or 2:00 and just tell myself I need to wait. Sometime around 3:15 or 3:30 I realize I could have been eating!
Since I bring lunch to work, it is easy to control what I have. Usually I start with a mozzarella cheese stick which I eat while a single serving leftover is heating in the microwave. Then lunch followed by a low fat yogurt. That fills me up and I don't even feel like snacking. Candy in the afternoon was a problem prior to Fast-5.
I have Barrett's Esophagus as a result of acid reflux, so I should not eat anything within a few hours of bedtime anyway. That makes 8 o'clock a good cutoff. I eat whatever is for dinner, nothing special. Often I am done by 7:00 or 7:30 and don't eat any more because by the time I am ready for desert, I find out it is 8:30 and outside my eating window.
So I guess there is a little self control involved, but for me it is a clear cut rule to only eat 3-8. No decisions really needed. If I don't break the rule, I loose weight. So I follow the rule. I think this is much the way it is described in the book.
So that is my saga for the last 4 months or so. It will be easy to stick with Fast-5. Now if I can only get off this plateau before Christmas I will be thrilled.
