Thanks for that. This is the kind of article that I always wish I could memorise and be able to recite the biological processes off the top of my head when I meet someone who it could help.

What a pity Dr Mirkin has to add at the foot of the article that old myth "any type of exercise will help you to lose weight". Clinical trials using real people (as opposed to hearsay, supposition, common-sense, logic etc) have proved that as a weight loss tool, bed rest is far more effective than exercise; also that exercise has been proved to cause people to eat more calories, and thus gain back more than they have expended. For example eating one biscuit you would need to sweat-exercise for 3 hours to burn it off, but what people do in practise is 30 minutes on the treadmill then have a creamy coffee and five biscuits!
